Ch. 1339The Sage and Shaokang
Sage Jatiri taught Shaokang about death and choosing his own path through an ancient story of a Quetzal fleeing a flood, then gave him a bird to raise. Jatiri intended the bird’s eventual death to awaken Shaokang to loss, while warning Jia Wenshu that neither Shaokang’s future nor the Purepecha people’s fate could be rushed.
- Shaokang asked Sage Jatiri what kind of man his father was, and Jatiri said the king followed a clear, resolute path.
- Jatiri explained to Shaokang that understanding death was the first step toward choosing a path, then invited him to select an inheritance mural.
- Shaokang chose the mural of a Great Lake and a Quetzal, and Jatiri told him how the bird fled south after floods and invasion devastated its homeland.
- Jatiri gave Shaokang a Quetzal to care for himself, making the child delighted.
- After Shaokang left, Jatiri told Jia Wenshu that the Quetzal’s death would introduce Shaokang to loss and urged the officials not to hurry his future.
