Ch. 481Athrun's Call
Summary
ZAFT’s sudden intervention places Orb in an even more precarious position. Athrun Zala delivers an ultimatum: Orb must return the Freedom Gundam and hand over Lacus Clyne, whom ZAFT brands a traitor. In exchange, he promises ZAFT’s military support against the Earth Alliance invasion.
The offer briefly tempts Orb’s exhausted commanders, who are desperate for a way to survive. Uzumi Nara Athha, too, feels that temptation—but rejects it, recognizing that joining either side in the war would expose Orb and its people to devastating consequences. He sees ZAFT’s offer as a dangerous illusion rather than a true solution.
When Athrun and Uzumi speak, Uzumi admits that the Freedom is inside Orb but says there is no official record of Lacus entering the country. This carefully worded evasion gives Orb room to deny responsibility for her presence. Athrun realizes the claim is misleading: both Lacus and the Freedom are aboard the Archangel, which is inside Orb’s defenses. The exchange ends with Athrun’s irritation becoming apparent.
