Background / History

Sakumo was one of Konoha’s most celebrated shinobi, a top-tier fighter whose prestige reportedly surpassed even the Hokage’s. His reputation collapsed after he abandoned an important mission to save his companions, causing severe losses for the village. Civilians blamed him for battlefield deaths and the deteriorating war situation, while Konoha’s leadership allowed the condemnation to intensify because his popularity and independence threatened the existing power structure 1 50.

Despite the public hostility, Sakumo remained a gentle and attentive father to Kakashi. He cooked Kakashi’s favorite meals, advised him to find his own ninja way, and secretly took pride in his son’s talent with Lightning Release swordsmanship 49 50.

Believing that continued resistance would turn the Hatake clan into traitors and permanently ruin Kakashi’s future, Sakumo initially concluded that suicide was the only way to end the political storm.
