Background

Sunagakure faces severe material pressure compared with the fertile Land of Fire. The Land of Wind suffers from desert conditions, scarce water, and limited supplies, while the Land of Fire possesses abundant forests and arable land. These inequalities are presented as a central cause of Sunagakure's attempt to seize territory and resources from Konohagakure. 4

The village's war effort is also driven by a concealed leadership crisis. The Third Kazekage, regarded as Sunagakure's strongest Kazekage, vanished without a trace; Chiyo and Ebizo's secret search produced neither a body nor evidence of his fate after half a month. Publicly, the village maintains that he is in seclusion. 11 26

Sunagakure's leadership considers this secret existential: exposure could destabilize the village, worsen its financial crisis under the Wind Daimyo's budget cuts, and invite intervention by rival nations. The Kikyo Pass campaign is therefore intended to secure supplies, demonstrate continuing military strength, and preserve the impression that the Third Kazekage remains in control. 11

Kikyo Pass Campaign

Supply-line ambush

Sunagakure dispatches an elite force to intercept a Konohagakure convoy carrying Explosive Tags and medical supplies toward Kikyo Pass. The attackers use coordinated close-quarters assaults and explosive-tag kunai to destroy the convoy formation, killing or incapacitating most of its Genin guards. 6

Rasa personally joins the ambush on a Gold Dust platform, declaring that the supplies will not reach Kikyo Pass. After killing several defenders and ordering Captain Yamada's execution, he leaves elite subordinates to eliminate the survivors. 6

Qian Ye escapes with intelligence about the ambush. His subsequent killing of Rasa's pursuing elite shinobi with an unknown explosive weapon leaves a ten-meter-wide crater, leading Rasa to conclude that the planned dawn attack has been compromised. 9 10 11

Premature general assault

Rather than wait for reinforcements to reach Konoha, Rasa abandons the concealed attack plan and orders Sunagakure's entire army to launch an immediate assault on Kikyo Pass. Thousands of shinobi advance under his command. 10 11

The offensive commits major village assets at once: Rasa suppresses Konoha with Gold Dust, Pakura attacks the right flank with Scorch Release, puppet forces breach defenses, and Fū remains available in the rear. 14 26

Pakura's Scorch Release proves especially destructive. Her Scorch Release: Steam Kill removes moisture from victims' bodies, leaving dried corpses, while her heat attacks can melt stone and force Konoha's defenders into retreat. 14 28

Right-flank collapse

Qian Ye's revolver attacks kill more than twenty Sunagakure Genin and Chunin on the right flank, creating confusion because the weapon requires neither chakra nor hand seals. Pakura leaves her command position to pursue him, allowing Konoha to exploit the gap and drive Sunagakure's right flank backward. 15 17

Chiyo holds Pakura responsible for the resulting losses: thirty-seven Chunin are killed and twelve Jonin seriously injured after the offensive collapses. 18

During Sunagakure's renewed assault, Qian Ye lures Pakura into Konoha's Four Violet Flame Formation. Pakura suffers a Scorch Release backlash and is captured alive after Qian Ye stabilizes her condition with water- and wind-nature chakra. 28 31 32

Rasa determines that attempting a rescue would expose the assault force to Orochimaru's encircling troops. He orders a retreat, abandoning Pakura and ending the immediate offensive. 31
