Astoria came from one of the most prominent Pure-blood Families, but she had none of the arrogance of those noble children.

There was a delicate air about her that made people want to protect her.

Draco Malfoy offered his arm like a gentleman. Delighted but composed, Astoria slipped her hand through it.

Draco Malfoy showed a rare steadiness, as though he had grown several years older in an instant—someone the slender Astoria could lean on.

The others stared at the pair, who looked made for each other.

"Harry, where's your date?" Eli nudged Harry.

Harry looked both ways through the passing crowd, but the swirl of colorful finery dazzled him.

"Patil. The younger Patil. She doesn't seem to be here yet."

Eli vaguely remembered the Patil Sisters, a pair of twins from Gryffindor.

"Harry?" A girl with an elegant bearing came up behind Harry. Judging by her outfit, Eli thought she was of Indian descent.

"Oh." Harry turned in surprise, looking a little awkward. "I thought... Indian clothes would be easy to spot."

Patil looked Harry up and down, a flash of admiration in her eyes. "You look great. Good taste."

Harry grew self-conscious, making the others shake their heads.

They headed toward the Great Hall, drawing plenty of attention along the way.

The boys from Durmstrang wore vivid red robes and capes draped over one shoulder, catching the eyes of boys and girls alike.

Then Eli and his group appeared, and everyone's attention shifted to them.

Even Ron Weasley, dressed in his old robes, gained confidence under the admiring looks. He puffed out his chest, his absurdly large lace collar lending him an imposing air.

Eli searched everywhere for the figure he knew he would recognize at a glance, but he could not find her.

"Lavender isn't here either?"
