Black Lake's Grim Shadow

Hogwarts' Black Lake was as eerie and mysterious as the Forbidden Forest, known as the dark forest.

When Eli entered the Black Lake, the already weak sunlight was powerless against the deep waters. Everywhere he looked was dim and shadowy, with dark shapes swaying in the darkness.

The Black Lake resembled a valley, filled with jagged rocks. Clumps of aquatic plants stretched from the lakebed all the way to the surface, drifting quietly with the water like countless tentacles.

Very few things could make sounds underwater. Apart from the faint noises occasionally filtering down from the shore, the Black Lake was utterly silent.

No one would want to stay here. Above, below, and all around, there was no end in sight and nothing to rely on.

No one knew what sort of existence might be watching them from the darkness nearby.

Eli and Harry wandered about somewhat aimlessly. The Black Lake was anything but small, and they had no idea where Hermione and Ron Weasley were.

Pheobe, Krum, and Cedric had each swum off in different directions as soon as they entered the water. Now only Eli and Harry remained nearby, and neither knew who would find the hostages first.

Pheobe and Cedric had both used the Bubble-Head Charm. Krum was the most conspicuous—Eli had seen with his own eyes that his upper body had turned into seafood... no, a shark.

Eli and Harry stayed close together, their Wands constantly in hand, because a large colony of Grindylows lived in these waters.

Grindylows were similar to the water monkeys of legend, like water ghosts. They were extremely troublesome underwater, and if angered, they would drag people down and drown them.

The two swam around, while the lake remained incomparably quiet, as though there was nothing there at all.
