Gu Ling pushed aside the dangling vines, then abruptly stopped.
Beside the tree roots ahead lay a blue-backed wolf. Its neck twisted to one side, and blood that had yet to dry clung to its fur, but there were no signs of other soul beasts feeding on it.
"Another one."
Dugu Bo stepped forward and crouched to examine the wounds, his brow gradually furrowing.
Since entering this stretch of forest, they had found three corpses in succession. The soul beasts were different species, and their causes of death varied, but they shared one striking similarity.
None had been dead long, yet their lingering soul power was abnormally weak.
"The flesh hasn't been eaten, but much of its power has been drained." Dugu Bo withdrew his hand and looked deeper into the woods. "There's probably something nearby that cultivates through devouring."
Gu Rong glanced around. The canopy overhead was dense, leaving only scattered patches of light on the ground.
There were no obvious footprints in the forest. Finding the culprit here would clearly be no easy task.
Yet the word "devouring" stirred something in Gu Ling's mind.

In the original story, that soul beast grew by devouring the power of other soul beasts and soul masters, and its methods were exceedingly sinister.
If it really was that creature, it would make an excellent fifth soul ring.
But it would certainly be no easy prey!
"Teacher, Old Poison, keep an eye out for tiger-type soul beasts from here on," Gu Ling said. "Especially one with black wings and a hooked tail."
