Ever since his battle with Orochimaru, Sasori had undergone a drastic change. It was summer break at the Ninja Academy, so he did not need to attend school. He had put away his former mischievous behavior and become like a walking corpse, distracted even while eating and sleeping.

At times, he furrowed his brow; at times, he sat silently in a daze; at times, he muttered away like a madman; and at times, as though struck by inspiration, he grabbed a sheet of paper and began sketching. Chiyo watched anxiously. Sasori was the only precious child in the family. If he truly lost his mind, how would she face her late husband Reto in the afterlife?

Then things got even worse. Sasori carried a huge pile of crafting materials and Puppet Technique manuals into the workshop and refused to come out. He ate, drank, slept, and relieved himself in there.

When Chiyo brought him food, he ignored her completely. He was either drawing blueprints or carving wood. He did not brush his teeth, did not bathe, and stayed awake night after night. His little eyes were bloodshot from exhaustion and crusted with eye gunk, while his whole body had visibly wasted away!

Chiyo was heartbroken. She pleaded with him again and again, coaxed him over and over, but Sasori remained stubborn. Eventually, he simply locked the workshop door from the inside, leaving only a small window for delivering food.

Chiyo was so anxious she nearly wanted to hang herself. With nowhere to vent her anger, she berated Akasuna Guimu and his wife without mercy. "You heartless pair! As parents, all you do is keep yourselves busy outside all day! Your own child is practically losing his mind, and you do not even care!"
