Ch. 1141The Tale of the Progenitor: Contemplating Freedom
Chapter Summary: Contemplating Freedom
Key Plot Points and Events
- In the Endless Fire Domain, Void Yu confronts Yu while Amaterasu Omikami remains concealed. Void Yu assumes Yu is attempting to survive the true flames through his former technique, Immovable Zen Meditation.
- Yu uses an evolved form of Immovable Zazen based on the Unconditioned Dharma. Instead of resisting or enduring pain, he observes every sensation without attachment, imagining himself as an infinite Grand Void through which the flames merely pass.
- Void Yu intensifies the attack by opening Yomotsu Hirasaka inside Yu’s body, causing Amaterasu’s true flames to burn him both internally and externally. Yu’s eyes, flesh, and bodily openings are destroyed and repeatedly regenerated.
- When his imagined void proves insufficient, Yu expands it into an even greater Grand Void, allowing him to remain mentally unshaken. He declares that if Void Yu cannot kill him, then Void Yu simply is not strong enough.
- Enraged, Void Yu uses Shikigami: Zengpo Jiali to erase Immovable Zazen from the Deva Path, believing this will finally eliminate Yu’s means of survival.
- Elsewhere, Youtan Poluo and the Eight Great Envoys redirect the spreading fire into Hell. The eighteen levels and the abyss of Avīci are destroyed, while the flames are drawn into the hidden nineteenth level, Rootless Hell.
- Urashiki reacts with manic excitement as something “grows out” and catches fire. In Rootless Hell, Shiki remains bound and is repeatedly executed by a sword-wielding shikigami. Just as the flames approach, Datsueba arrives to relocate Shiki—but the swordsman delivers one final slash, cutting Shiki in half before leaving.
- Back in the Endless Fire Domain, Void Yu is shocked to find Yu still meditating despite erasing the technique from the Deva Path. Yu explains that Immovable Zazen now exists within him as part of the eternal Unconditioned Dharma. Since the self is ultimately illusory, neither the Dharma nor Yu can be erased in the ordinary sense.
- Yu closes his eyes and resumes meditation, effectively dismissing Void Yu’s threats.
Character Developments
- Yu advances from merely “enduring” suffering to practicing complete nonattachment. His strength comes from observing pain, destruction, and regeneration without identifying with them.
- Void Yu becomes increasingly frustrated and humiliated. His overwhelming power and ability to erase techniques fail against Yu’s deeper understanding of the Unconditioned Dharma.
- Amaterasu Omikami remains concealed but indirectly enables the conflict through her Endless Fire Domain and true flames.
- Youtan Poluo and the Eight Great Envoys demonstrate their willingness to redirect a catastrophic fire, even at the cost of destroying Hell and its inhabitants.
- Shiki remains trapped in seemingly endless punishment. His brief hope of escape is replaced by further suffering when the executioner cuts him in half.
- Urashiki displays disturbing delight at the destruction unfolding in Rootless Hell.
- Datsueba acts compassionately toward Shiki, though her intervention comes too late to prevent the final execution blow.
Significant Themes
- Freedom through nonattachment: Yu’s freedom does not come from escaping pain but from refusing to cling to or identify with it.
- The limits of destruction: Techniques can erase forms and names within a particular realm, but they cannot eliminate a truth embodied in the Unconditioned Dharma.
- The illusory self: Yu argues that because the self has no fixed reality, it cannot be truly destroyed or grasped.
- Suffering and transformation: Fire becomes both torture and a means of renewal, repeatedly destroying Yu’s body while making him stronger.
- Compassion amid brutality: Datsueba’s kindness contrasts with the relentless violence of Rootless Hell, though compassion cannot fully prevent suffering.
- Eternal Dharma versus conditioned power: Void Yu relies on force and technique, while Yu’s spiritual insight operates beyond the limits of the Deva Path.
Character Interactions
- Yu and Void Yu: Their confrontation is primarily philosophical as well as physical. Void Yu attempts to overwhelm and erase Yu’s technique, while Yu calmly demonstrates that his practice has transcended technique itself.
- Yu and the flames: Yu treats the flames not as an enemy to resist but as sensations to observe, turning destruction into a test of awareness and regeneration.
- Datsueba and the executioner: Datsueba politely tries to interrupt Shiki’s punishment, but the executioner completes one final strike before accepting her intervention.
- Shiki and the executioner: Their interaction reflects the cruelty and mechanical permanence of Rootless Hell, with the swordsman continuing his emotionless duty despite Shiki’s despair.
- Urashiki and Rootless Hell: Urashiki watches the inferno with exhilaration, emphasizing his sadistic fascination with destruction.
