Background

Flying Cloud Stronghold was the largest bandit force around Qingfeng County. It occupied Cloudflight Mountain, a strategically defensible position along a road used by merchants and travelers. Its bandits repeatedly harassed traffic and plundered nearby villages, making it a long-standing threat to the county. Zhao Zhi’s father died during an earlier campaign against the stronghold. 3 20

Although Qingfeng County launched repeated suppression campaigns, the stronghold endured for years. County Magistrate Lu Guangyi and successive magistrates maintained covert arrangements with its leadership: campaigns were staged, both sides accepted limited casualties, and money and requested goods were delivered to the bandits. 3 5 9 22

The stronghold’s power rested on its chieftains and its terrain. It originally had six chieftains, with the First Chieftain having entered the Innate realm. 4

Location and Defenses

Flying Cloud Stronghold was divided into an outer stockade and a main stockade.

• Three sides of Cloudflight Mountain were protected by sheer cliffs.
• The sole approach was a rugged mountain path roughly three meters wide. 20
• The outer stockade contained watchtowers, catapults, stones, torches, and a large wooden gate.
• Its elevated position allowed defenders to observe attackers from several hundred meters away. 20
• A concealed passage and underground cultivation chamber existed behind the main fortress, where Xianyu Tu refined Human Elixirs and kept the damaged Little Netherworld Sword stele. 24 25 28

Banditry

The stronghold preyed on merchants, caravans, travelers, and villages near Qingfeng County. Its position on a major route allowed it to disrupt traffic while remaining difficult to assault. 20

Collusion with Qingfeng County

Lu Guangyi used public suppression campaigns to collect funds from local gentry and commoners. In practice, he and the stronghold arranged performative battles, exchanged goods and money, and allowed the bandits to survive. 9 20 22

During the final campaign, Lu Guangyi promised the stronghold thirty percent of the raised funds, advance delivery of requested goods, and the opportunity to kill Zhao Zhi. 9

Human Elixirs

Xianyu Tu operated from a hidden chamber beneath the stronghold and used victims to refine Human Elixirs. Ma Zhuo supplied the operation and benefited from the elixirs, which improved his talent and raised his cultivation to Innate Perfection. 22 25

The chamber contained Human Elixirs, Xiantian martial-arts manuals, and the damaged stone stele bearing the Incomplete Little Netherworld Sword. Zhao Zhi destroyed the remaining Human Elixirs he found there. 25

Destruction

Zhao Zhi’s killing of Wu Jiu and Ge Zhou weakened the stronghold and prompted Qingfeng County to launch another campaign less than three months after its previous failed expedition. 20

During the assault, Li Muguang and several Qingfeng County martial artists lured Zhao into a cave trap. Zhao killed Li, Constable Chief Cao Yun, and the Su and Tao Family martial artists involved in the ambush. 21 23

Zhao later discovered the stronghold’s hidden chamber, defeated Ma Zhuo, and killed Xianyu Tu, the true force behind its Human Elixir scheme. 25 28 29

With its principal leaders dead or missing, the surviving bandits were left to the Profound Nether Platform. Yan Qing ordered them imprisoned and directed a search of the stronghold for concealed valuables. 29 30 News subsequently confirmed that Flying Cloud Stronghold had been completely destroyed. 32
