Chapter Sixteen
"Mom, I'm home. Where's Dad?"
Carrying a paper bag in one hand, Ye Nanxun pushed open the door and stepped into the entryway, bending down to change into his fluffy slippers.
Chen Mingzhu's voice came from the kitchen. "Your dad went to the company and hasn't come back yet. I made soup today. It should be ready by the time you come downstairs after a hot bath."
"Okay," Ye Nanxun answered, then padded upstairs to his room in his slippers.
He set the paper bag containing the scarf on the table and took a bathrobe from the closet.
Ye Nanxun walked into the bathroom and kicked off his fuzzy slippers. His slender feet stepped into black non-slip sandals, making the faint blue veins on his pale insteps all the more visible.
Amid the hazy steam, a long, pale figure lifted a leg and stepped into the bathtub.
He cupped hot water in both hands and splashed it over his face. As the heat enveloped and relaxed every muscle in his body, Ye Nanxun let out a deep, satisfied breath.
Soft music echoed through the bathroom, while a bottle of red wine and a wineglass sat on the stone ledge beside the tub.
Leaning back slowly, Ye Nanxun poured half a glass of red wine.
After taking a few small sips, he rested his damp arm on the warm stone ledge, half-lidded pale green eyes lowered as he leaned his head against his arm.
Yan Beiyou.
That man's name was Yan Beiyou.
They had exchanged names, but neither had left the other any contact information.
For some reason, the name "Yan Beiyou" sounded familiar.
The steam had left his head feeling full and swollen, and the faint buzz of alcohol made his thoughts hazy.
Splash—
The unfinished wine pinched between his fingers fell into the water, spreading into a brilliant crimson stain.
"Yan Beiyou—"
Ye Nanxun sucked in a sharp breath and sat bolt upright.
Yan Beiyou, Yan Beiyou.
Wasn't that the name of the Emperor of the Galaxy?
Ye Nanxun suddenly rose from the bathtub. After standing there for several seconds, he sat back down again.
He turned on the smart screen in the bathroom.
The soothing music filling the air shut off as Ye Nanxun typed the three characters "Yan Beiyou" into the search bar.
A stern yet handsome face abruptly filled his vision.
He had almost never paid attention to political news in the past, much less sought out the news himself.
Though he lived in this galaxy, he rarely went out into the wider world. He had never even cared to remember what the ruler of their galaxy looked like.
When Ye Nanxun had been reborn, Yan Beiyou's name had briefly passed through his mind.
But only briefly.
Ye Nanxun had never imagined that he would run into the Emperor of the Galaxy at the Imperial Palace.
Other than ministers close to the center of power, even those who worked in the Imperial Palace every day might never see Yan Beiyou.
Let alone him.
"So it really was Yan Beiyou..."
After leaving the bathroom, Ye Nanxun wrapped himself in his bathrobe and walked over to the table.
He took the scarf out of the bag.
It was a black-and-gray scarf, soft in texture and classic in style.
There was no familiar brand logo or tag.
At one corner of the scarf, Ye Nanxun found a piece of hand embroidery. There was only one character on it: Bei.
Winter's brief stretch of clear weather lasted only a few days.
Then came several more days of wind and snow, with gloomy skies overhead.
Wearing only a fitted overcoat for warmth, Xu Wenyan shivered violently in the wind, his lips turning purple.
His gloved fingers clutched the scarf around his neck as he wandered aimlessly through the garden, trembling all the while.
It was rare for He Yiming to bring him to the Imperial Palace. No matter what, he could not waste this opportunity.
He clearly remembered that in his previous life, Zhu Shixin and He Yiming had mentioned while chatting that Yan Beiyou liked taking walks through the garden during breaks from work.
Xu Wenyan had imagined running into Yan Beiyou by chance in the garden while the emperor was out strolling.
Once that handsome and imposing emperor saw him, he would surely be deeply impressed by his beauty.
Xu Wenyan was utterly confident.
His background might not be good, and his mother might be an unacknowledged mistress...
But so what?
Though his biological father had never married his mother, hadn't he still spent piles of money on both of them?
Besides, his mother had never had just one man. Xu Wenyan did not particularly care whether his biological father acknowledged him and brought him into the family.
He had inherited the same beautiful face as his mother.
Even with only A-grade spiritual power, hadn't top-tier alphas still fallen over themselves for his looks?
He refused to believe it.
With such a top-quality beauty practically delivering himself to the door, could Yan Beiyou really resist him?
Beneath his fitted overcoat, he wore carefully prepared tight clothes that accentuated his waistline, though they did little to keep him warm.
Xu Wenyan had been braving the cold wind in the garden for nearly an hour, yet he had not caught even a glimpse of Yan Beiyou.
After cursing several times, Xu Wenyan truly could not bear the cold any longer.
Seeing no sign that the freezing wind would stop, he guessed that no matter how much Yan Beiyou enjoyed strolling through gardens, he would not come out in weather like this. Only then did he reluctantly leave the garden.
Not long after Xu Wenyan left.
A tall, slender figure strolled leisurely through the garden ravaged by wind and snow.
Powerful spiritual power formed an invisible barrier around him. No matter how fierce the storm outside became, not a single snowflake could touch the alpha.
Remembering Ye Nanxun's calm expression after he had told him his name, Yan Beiyou's lips suddenly curved upward.
Back in his study, the glowing screen displayed the work he had yet to finish.
Rather than immediately returning to his work, Yan Beiyou took the Mushroom Dragon Egg from his pocket and placed it in the little scarf nest beside his desk.
"Should I tell your father that you exist?"
His gaze moved away from the Mushroom Dragon Egg, and Yan Beiyou gently shook his head.
Once the Mushroom Dragon Egg hatched, who knew what it would look like?
Leaning back against his chair, Yan Beiyou called Zhu Yucheng.
Zhu Yucheng appeared on the screen, his expression stern and serious, his back straight.
"Your Majesty, what are your orders?"
"Personal matter."
Zhu Yucheng relaxed, his back slumping as well. "Oh, Your Majesty, what is it?"
"Next week is your birthday. I'm giving you three days off."
Delight filled Zhu Yucheng's face, and he grinned from ear to ear. "Your Majesty is wise and mighty!"
Yan Beiyou chuckled as well. "Where will you be holding your birthday banquet that day?"
Rubbing the bridge of his high nose, Zhu Yucheng gave a slightly foolish smile. "Teacher Jiang arranged it for me. We're not going anywhere, just having it at home."
Looking blissfully happy, Zhu Yucheng said with a smile, "Your Majesty, if you're free that day, you absolutely have to come!"
Yan Beiyou said, "I will."
Yan Beiyou could not possibly have called him specifically to ask about his birthday banquet, could he? Zhu Yucheng asked again, "Your Majesty, is there anything else?"
After giving a quiet hum, Yan Beiyou asked, "Yucheng, do you think anyone in Dream Star Capital could see my face and still fail to recognize me, or not know who Yan Beiyou is?"
Zhu Yucheng burst out laughing. "Your Majesty, is this some new kind of bad joke? How could anyone possibly not know you?"
Yan Beiyou smiled and ended the call with Zhu Yucheng.
He straightened up from the back of his chair, folded his hands together on the desk, and sat upright.
The screen suddenly let out a beep.
The next second, a game window automatically popped up.
The long-unseen Little Mushroom stood before the giant dragon.
