Ch. 401Island Woman
Chapter Summary: “Island Woman”
Plot Points and Events
- Bai Qing recalls that the protagonists of the original 2012-style story entered Noah’s Ark by following one of its Tibetan construction workers. Xu Mo points out that, after so much time, finding that specific worker is nearly impossible.
- The group considers two alternatives: finding tickets or forcibly boarding the Ark. They reject breaking in because the boarding area would be heavily guarded and desperate survivors would likely attack anyone trying to enter.
- Xu Mo, Bai Qing, and Wang Jia spend more than a dozen hours resting in first class before flying to an airport near Mount Everest.
- Wang Jia tells the eight flight attendants about Noah’s Ark, giving them a chance to obtain tickets themselves. The three protagonists then leave the plane.
- Airport staff escort them to the American Ark’s reception hall. They realize that the hall contains only people who have arrived during the past two hours, and boarding will begin in less than an hour. They must obtain three tickets quickly.
- Xu Mo begins searching the crowd for suitable targets. A wealthy-looking Japanese woman deliberately unleashes her pit bull at the group, apparently after hearing them speak Chinese.
- Xu Mo kills the attacking dog with a single kick. Bai Qing retaliates against the woman, striking and overpowering her when she curses Xu Mo and attempts to cause trouble.
- Two Japanese men approach after the woman calls for help in Japanese. Xu Mo realizes that the woman targeted them because of their nationality and concludes that the Japanese group may provide a way to obtain the three tickets they need.
Character Developments
- Xu Mo remains pragmatic and analytical. He quickly assesses the near-impossibility of finding the construction worker, understands the Ark’s security risks, and identifies the potential value of the Japanese group.
- Bai Qing demonstrates her enhanced physical strength and increasingly aggressive protective instinct. Although she recognizes the woman’s provocation, she responds with extreme force, decisively defending Xu Mo and herself.
- Wang Jia shows compassion by informing the flight attendants about the Ark rather than leaving them ignorant, but she remains firm in rejecting a reckless forced entry.
- The hostile Japanese woman is revealed as arrogant, prejudiced, and opportunistic. She deliberately provokes the protagonists but becomes frightened once Bai Qing retaliates.
Significant Themes
- Survival and moral compromise: Obtaining passage on the Ark is treated as a life-or-death struggle, forcing the protagonists to consider manipulation, violence, or taking tickets from others.
- Class inequality and privilege: The Ark is reserved for wealthy or powerful people who can afford immense sums for tickets, while ordinary passengers and even pilots remain largely unaware of the truth.
- National divisions during catastrophe: The Ark system is organized according to political alliances, and nationality creates hostility even as humanity faces a common disaster.
- Pragmatism versus compassion: Wang Jia’s decision to warn the flight attendants contrasts with the ruthless behavior of those hoarding Ark access.
- Power and vulnerability: The Japanese woman initially uses her social status and aggression to intimidate the group, but Bai Qing’s enhanced strength completely reverses the power dynamic.
Character Interactions
- Xu Mo, Bai Qing, and Wang Jia cooperate closely, agreeing that tickets are their only realistic route onto the Ark.
- Wang Jia acts as the most sympathetic member of the group by warning the flight attendants.
- The Japanese woman engineers a confrontation by releasing her dog at the protagonists. Xu Mo responds by killing the dog, while Bai Qing physically punishes the woman for her deliberate attack.
- When the woman calls to two Japanese men for assistance, Xu Mo recognizes the nationalist motive behind the incident and sees the confrontation as an opportunity to secure tickets. The chapter ends with the group preparing to exploit this situation.
