Chapter Summary
Xue Qingmu’s attachment to Buddha Lotus
Xue Qingmu of the Blissful Union Sect becomes fixated on Buddha Lotus, a powerful plant demon revered by Bitter Crossing Temple. His apparent Wood Spiritual Root makes him instinctively drawn to spiritual plants, intensifying his desire to join the temple so he can remain near the lotus. His senior brother, Wen Zhiyi, reprimands him and forcibly pulls him away when he refuses to let go.
Bushi’s ambiguous response
Bushi explains that Bitter Crossing Temple cannot accept everyone and refuses to directly promise Xue Qingmu entry. He tells Xue that if he has the ability and fate to return, he may come again—a deliberately vague statement that Bushi intends as a provocation. Xue, however, interprets it sincerely as confirmation of a destined bond with Buddha Lotus.
Wen Xu and Bian Chunchou observe the scene
Wen Xu and Bian Chunchou watch from the crowd. Wen Xu identifies Buddha Lotus as an exceptionally powerful plant demon and notes that Xue’s attraction may stem from his Wood Spiritual Root. Bushi also claims that Wen Xu possesses a strong Buddhist affinity and invites him to remain at the temple after the Five Sects Assembly.
The theft of Little Water-Ripple Beast
While Bushi is distracted, Bian Chunchou cleverly takes Little Counterweight, the little water-ripple beast, with the creature’s cooperation. Bushi protests, but Bian has no intention of returning it, turning the exchange into another playful contest between them.
Historical conflict between the two sects
The chapter recalls that unusual incidents involving the Blissful Union Sect often occur during the Five Sects Assembly. The most famous was Dharma Master Chishan’s departure from Bitter Crossing Temple to join the Blissful Union Sect. Chishan had once been considered a likely future abbot, so his defection deeply damaged relations between the sects. Numerous conflicting rumors circulated about whether he left because of a flawed Buddhist heart, personal arrogance, helplessness, or a relationship with Siren True Lord.
Character developments and interactions
- Xue Qingmu is shown as innocent, impulsive, and single-minded, unable to recognize Bushi’s teasing or political implications.
- Wen Zhiyi acts as a strict, protective senior brother who must physically restrain and discipline him.
- Bushi remains outwardly courteous but shrewd and provocative, carefully avoiding promises while testing others’ reactions.
- Wen Xu is treated as someone with unusual Buddhist potential, while Bian Chunchou remains alert to Bushi’s manipulation and actively interrupts their conversation.
- Bian Chunchou and Bushi continue their mischievous rivalry through the playful kidnapping of Little Counterweight.
