History

The Intercepting Sect is regarded on Blue Star as the most dangerous of the three Secret Realm factions. Its reputation for “teaching without distinction,” its vast disciple base, and its former glory are overshadowed by its prophesied defeat in the Investiture of the Gods Calamity. This fate made it a blood-red selection marker for trial entrants and the subject of repeated warnings from teachers such as Chen Qingshan 1.

Lin Yuan chose the sect specifically because its doomed disciples gave his Fate-Reversal Inheritance system targets to save. His first interventions prevented Biyun’s death and diverted Lady Shiji from her fatal confrontation at Qianyuan Mountain. Golden Spirit Holy Mother’s arrival at Chentang Pass forced Taiyi to acknowledge Nezha’s wrongdoing, allowing Shiji to accept compensation rather than pursue the conflict to her death 3 5.

The sect’s involvement in the Shang–Zhou conflict exposed a recurring weakness: disciples were vulnerable when isolated, pursued enemies alone, or answered each casualty with a larger retaliatory force. Lin Yuan helped the Four Sages of Nine-Dragon Island survive by insisting they remain together, then helped the Ten Heavenly Lords redesign their formations so they could support one another instead of being defeated separately 13 16 20 22.

By the time Zhao Gongming and the Three Cloud Sisters entered the conflict, the sect had developed into a more coordinated force. Its surviving members located and destroyed the altar sustaining Zhao Gongming’s curse, defended the Three Cloud Sisters against Yuanshi’s intervention, and withdrew key disciples from West Qi rather than allowing them to be consumed by repeated battles 35 36 45 47.

Sect character

The Intercepting Sect has a comparatively relaxed internal hierarchy. Disciples spar, joke, drink, and form relationships across differences in cultivation, rather than maintaining the stricter distance associated with the Explanatory Sect 10.

Its defining instinct is to protect its own. Golden Spirit Holy Mother defends Biyun’s right to accountability; the Four Sages immediately answer Wen Zhong’s request for help; and Tongtian personally confronts Yuanshi when the Three Cloud Sisters are threatened 5 12 45 46.

This loyalty is also its historical vulnerability. Enemies can exploit a disciple’s death to lure increasingly powerful allies into the same calamity, turning rescue and retaliation into a chain of losses 39 50.

Formations and Military Methods

Ten Ultimate Linked Formation

The Ten Heavenly Lords originally deployed ten separate formations, each powerful but unable to reinforce the others. Lin Yuan identified this isolation as their critical weakness: an opponent could focus overwhelming force on one formation at a time 20.

The revised system uses nine Supreme Clarity Formation Talismans to transfer power between formations. A threatened formation can borrow support from the other nine, exchange elemental effects, shift controlling positions, and move key formation eyes to evade attacks 22 23 26.

• Initial transfers were reliably maintained at roughly ten percent of each supporting formation’s power; higher transfers risked destabilizing the network 22.
• The linked formation allowed the Ten Heavenly Lords to survive a coordinated assault by the Twelve Golden Immortals, even though it could not defeat them outright 27.
• Continued attacks produced further refinements, including moving formation cores, redirected attack routes, and concentrated mana channels 26.

Nine-Twist Yellow River Formation

The Three Cloud Sisters’ formation surpasses the linked Ten Ultimate Formation by functioning as a complete, self-contained world rather than a network of separate structures. It distorts space and direction, erodes immortal energy, and threatens the Three Flowers and Five Qi that support a cultivator’s foundation 41.

When all Twelve Golden Immortals entered together, Lin Yuan supported the formation externally by detecting weaknesses and repairing its foundations with Formation-Stabilizing Talismans. The formation ultimately stripped much of the Twelve Golden Immortals’ cultivation without killing them 42 43.

Strategic Reforms

Tongtian formally adopted Lin Yuan’s survival-focused doctrine as sect rules for all matters involving the calamity 50.
