Background
The Uchiha are one of the Warring States Era’s dominant shinobi clans, renowned for elite combat ability, Fire Release, and the Sharingan. Their name carries enough weight that merchants and clients seek them out across national borders for missions, while weaker clans generally avoid provoking them. 1 4 38
Under Uchiha Tajima, the clan is defined by military strength, aggressive retaliation, and the belief that fear is necessary for survival. Tajima regards abandoning allies as politically dangerous—not from sentiment, but because it would weaken the clan’s ability to secure future alliances and commissions. 5 9
The clan’s long-running war with the Senju shapes nearly every major decision. Uchiha members inherit the losses and hatred of previous generations, making proposed reconciliation with the Senju deeply unpopular even when it is advocated by Senju Hashirama. 18 44 45
The Uchiha trace their lineage to Indra Ōtsutsuki, inheriting exceptional shinobi talent and an aloof, prideful disposition. Their Sharingan can evolve from one tomoe to three tomoe and, for exceptional wielders, into the Mangekyō Sharingan. 91 101
By the later Shinobi Village Era, the clan’s authority increasingly shifts from Madara’s public leadership to Jobu’s administration, strategy, scientific development, and foreign policy. Jobu ultimately transforms the Uchiha from a Land of Fire clan into a force able to challenge Ōtsutsuki and other worlds. 61 106 131 194
Organization and Leadership
| Position | Holder | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Clan Head | Uchiha Tajima | Led the clan during its early conflicts with the Senju, Hyuga, Sarutobi, and Kaguya. He later died in battle alongside Senju Butsuma. 1 13 |
| Clan Head | Uchiha Madara | Succeeded Tajima at age fifteen. The elders accepted his leadership after Uchiha Jobu presented a long-term shinobi-village plan. He later becomes one of the clan’s greatest combatants, wielding Rinnegan, Susanoo, Wood Release, and tailed-beast power. 13 104 194 |
| Acting patriarch / supreme strategist | Uchiha Jobu | Recognized by Tajima and Madara for political judgment, combat talent, and plans for an Uchiha-centered shinobi village. Madara’s disinterest in administration eventually leaves Jobu as the clan’s effective decision-maker. 9 12 13 61 106 |
| Research, covert operations, and third-in-command | Uchiha Izuna | Assumed control of Jobu’s experimental laboratory and pursued foreign Kekkei Genkai to restore his lost strength. He later commands Root-like covert operations and serves as the clan’s third-in-command. 23 30 45 224 |
| Elder war-faction leader | Uchiha Setsuna | Veteran Warring States-era Uchiha who later leads a major faction, gains Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and becomes one of the clan’s foremost battlefield commanders. 141 151 169 |
| Former clan leader in the future Konoha era | Uchiha Fugaku | Led the Konoha-era clan alongside Setsuna’s elder influence, possessed a future-seeing Mangekyō ability, and was killed by Obito while protecting the Seven-Tails’ jinchūriki. 142 146 167 |
| Experimental operations | Uchiha Izuna | Assumed control of Jobu’s experimental laboratory and pursued foreign Kekkei Genkai to restore his lost strength. 23 30 45 |
The clan distinguishes between a Main Family that handles combat and missions and a Branch Family assigned to supplies and support. Branch-family members with limited ninja talent are particularly vulnerable when large-scale war resumes. 6 45
Age carries little authority in the clan’s era; combat talent can earn a child resources, influence, and a place in leadership discussions. This allowed Jobu and Madara to gain political standing while still young. 2 5
Following its expansion, the clan adopts more specialized military divisions, including Ninjutsu, Support, Rescue, and Logistics units. This formalization reflects Jobu’s longstanding preference for organized squads over the loose clan formations of the Warring States Era. 13 169
Capabilities
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the clan’s defining Kekkei Genkai. It grants enhanced perception and supports genjutsu, allowing Uchiha fighters to read and counter opponents’ movements.
- Uchiha patrols use the Sharingan to identify Transformation Technique users before allowing outsiders into clan territory. 9
- Against Shikotsumyaku users, the Sharingan’s dynamic vision lets Uchiha fighters anticipate bone-based attacks and evade or counter them. 11
- Mangekyō Sharingan users such as Madara can wield Susanoo, though its use imposes severe physical strain and threatens the user’s eyesight. 23 43
- The clan possesses a secret technique that sacrifices the light of one Sharingan to turn a fatal outcome into an illusory “dream”; Tajima used it to survive a near-fatal ambush, permanently blinding one eye. 8
- Mangekyō abilities among later members include Amaterasu, Tsukuyomi, future sight, reconstruction of the past, temporal projections, space-time techniques, and specialized flame-based dōjutsu. 141 146 151 154
- Through bloodline purification, transplantation, Wood Release Cells, Ten-Tails chakra, and Ōtsutsuki blood, elite Uchiha can gain Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan with inexhaustible ocular power. 101 149 169
- The clan’s highest-ranking members later wield Rinnegan and Rinne Sharingan-level ocular power. Madara’s Rinnegan grants techniques such as Tengai Shinsei and Limbo, while Izuna’s crimson Rinnegan can evolve toward the Rinne Sharingan. 104 194
Fire Release
Fire Release is the Uchiha’s principal elemental specialty and a major source of their battlefield reputation.
- Great Fireball Technique is treated as a basic technique that every Uchiha member is expected to learn. 7
- The clan fields large-scale techniques such as Great Fire Annihilation and Majestic Destroyer Flame. 14 18
- Uchiha forces overwhelmed a Sarutobi fire ambush with superior Fire Release, despite the Sarutobi’s own reputation for elemental techniques. 5
- Advanced Uchiha can combine Fire Release with Mangekyō techniques, Susanoo, or projected past selves to create attacks capable of destroying large formations. 151 154
Genjutsu and Combined Combat
Traditional Uchiha combat favors combining ocular genjutsu with ninjutsu or weapons rather than relying on a single discipline.
- Uchiha Kuwajima defeats the last Kaguya Shikotsumyaku user by exploiting the fighter’s avoidance of eye contact and catching him in Sharingan genjutsu. 11
- Uchiha Yagami uses swordsmanship and Sharingan-enhanced genjutsu to hold back multiple Kaguya attackers despite being injured. 6
- The clan’s younger generation demonstrated coordinated use of Fire Release, Earth Release, traps, and Explosive Tag-laden ninja tools during the Kaguya assault. 6 7
- Later Uchiha forces routinely combine Susanoo, swordsmanship, Fire Release, genjutsu, and time- or space-based ocular techniques against numerically superior enemies. 150 151 154
Bloodline Experimentation and Enhancement
Jobu and Izuna challenge the clan’s traditional belief that the Sharingan alone is sufficient by researching foreign Kekkei Genkai and artificially combining bloodlines.
- Jobu successfully grants Shikotsumyaku to himself and Ying through experiments on refugees, though most test subjects die or develop different abilities. 23
- Izuna gains Hagoromo techniques that can redirect and alter released ninjutsu, then implants a Chinoike Ketsuryūgan after adapting his body with Chinoike cells. 30 45
- The clan later acquires Wood Release fragments, Hashirama cells, Byakugan-related abilities, Sage Bodies, Ōtsutsuki blood, and tailed-beast chakra. 53 100 130
- Jobu uses chakra pills and direct bloodline enhancement to awaken Mangekyō Sharingan in chosen Uchiha and create Eternal Eyes for Tekka and Inabi. 149 169
- By the clan’s interstellar campaign, Mangekyō Sharingan has become the minimum standard for Uchiha participating in major combat operations. 193 194
Military Infrastructure
- Uchiha territory is guarded by traps and mechanisms designed to delay attackers and alert defenders. Authorized visitors must follow patrol guides exactly to avoid them. 9
- The clan places substantial value on ninja tools, explosive tags, military ration pills, and protected supply lines. 5 10
- During the renewed war with the Senju, the Uchiha field nearly 500 ninja, supported by more than 100 Hagoromo and over 70 Fūma fighters. 46
- The Genin, Chunin, and Jonin classifications introduced by Jobu become accepted as a practical framework, with Clan Leader Tier recognized above Jonin. 4 22
- Following the Senju’s defeat, the Uchiha command dependent clans according to their specialties, including Sarutobi elemental techniques, Shimura covert operations, Uzumaki sealing arts, and Nara diplomacy. 57 73
- In later eras, the clan can field numerous Susanoo users and organize large expeditionary forces capable of fighting major ninja villages, Akatsuki, Marines, and Ōtsutsuki. 150 183 194 224
History
Tajima’s Leadership
Tajima leads the clan through repeated conflicts with the Senju. An early confrontation between the two major clans ends inconclusively because both possess Clan Leader Tier fighters and cannot afford the losses required for victory. 4 5
When the Hyuga attack the Hagoromo Clan and threaten a shipment of Uchiha-ordered ninja tools, Tajima mobilizes to support the ally despite the clan’s contempt for Hagoromo weakness. The expedition is delayed by a Sarutobi ambush, then suffers severe losses in the subsequent fighting with the Hyuga. Tajima survives only by sacrificing the light of one Sharingan. 5 8
While Tajima’s main force is absent, the Kaguya Clan attacks the Uchiha compound. Injured defenders and younger Uchiha repel the assault through coordinated terrain manipulation, Fire Release, traps, and ninja tools. 6 7
War against the Kaguya Clan
The Uchiha retaliate with a surprise invasion of the Kaguya compound, supported by Hagoromo forces. Tajima kills the Kaguya clan head and orders the clan’s extermination, declaring Shikotsumyaku ineffective before the Sharingan. 11
The campaign devastates the Kaguya, but Hyuga forces break through the Hagoromo line and rescue more than twenty survivors. Tajima accepts Kuwajima’s advice to pause further expansion and recover rather than immediately attack the Sarutobi and Hyuga. 11 12
Expansion of the Uchiha Alliance
The Hagoromo Clan migrates into Uchiha territory and accepts subordinate status in exchange for protection. Tajima ultimately views the arrangement as a genuine alliance, recognizing that Hagoromo support reduces Uchiha casualties and has greater long-term value than simple exploitation. 9 12 13
After Tajima and Senju Butsuma die in battle, Madara becomes Uchiha clan head. The elders initially challenge his suitability, but Jobu’s proposal for a multi-clan shinobi village with specialized squads persuades them to accept Madara’s leadership. 13
The Uchiha later gain substantial funds through their Land of Lightning mission against the Chinoike Clan, receiving 200 million and a long-term contract to guard surviving Chinoike members. The wealth enables Madara to prepare for another major war against the Senju. 37 45
Renewed War with the Senju
Although Hashirama repeatedly proposes peace and a united village, Madara and Jobu reject reconciliation on the grounds that generations of Uchiha deaths cannot be dismissed through negotiation. Madara formally declares war after the clan’s financial position improves. 43 44 45
The Senju deploy roughly 700 fighters, including Uzumaki, Sarutobi, Shimura, and lesser-clan allies. The Uchiha alliance is outnumbered, but relies on elite combatants and allied forces to offset the numerical disadvantage. 46
The Hyuga Clan later joins the Uchiha side with more than one hundred Branch Family ninja. Their arrival sharply shifts the battlefield balance, placing the Uchiha and Hyuga—the era’s foremost dōjutsu clans—against the Senju alliance. 49
Jobu’s Shikotsumyaku destroys Tobirama’s layered defenses, while the Shimura betray the Senju during the battle. Izuna refuses to preserve the Shimura leadership as a future rival, demonstrating that the Uchiha alliance’s expansion is based on submission rather than equality. 51 53
Uchiha Hegemony in the Land of Fire
After Hashirama’s withdrawal leaves allied clans exposed, Jobu forces the Sarutobi, Shimura, and Uzumaki Clans to become Uchiha dependents. The Sarutobi accept under Sasuke after he kills his rival claimant, while the Uzumaki abandon their old Senju connection after Hashirama prioritizes his own clan’s survival. 57
The Uchiha-led coalition then launches its final war against the Senju. It uses sabotage, poisoned water supplies, attacks on rear compounds, the Nine-Tails, and overwhelming multi-clan force to destroy the Senju’s military power. Jobu personally seizes the Senju archives and Tobirama’s forbidden techniques. 72
The Senju Clan is effectively annihilated, with only members away on missions surviving. The Uchiha seize Senju territory and techniques, become the uncontested power of the Land of Fire, and begin establishing their shinobi village with daimyo funding and Nara diplomacy. 73
Six Paths and Ōtsutsuki Conflicts
The Uchiha’s development expands beyond conventional shinobi warfare after Jobu acquires Wood Release, Sage Body, Byakugan, Tenseigan, Rinnegan, and eventually true Ōtsutsuki bloodline power. Madara’s ocular power evolves toward the Rinnegan, while Izuna and other elite Uchiha are strengthened through experimental methods. 80 100 104 130
The clan later faces the intervention of Hagoromo, Hamura, revived Senju forces, and multiple Ōtsutsuki. Madara and Hashirama resume their inherited Indra–Ashura conflict, while the Uchiha’s other elite fighters battle the resurrected Senju. 111
After the Ninja World is unified, Jobu establishes peace through Uchiha supremacy and prepares the clan for cosmic expansion. Although Hashirama accepts cooperation, Tobirama remains resistant to Uchiha authority. 131 132
The Uchiha eventually refine powerful Ōtsutsuki and Ten-Tails entities into Chakra Fruits and pills, allowing the clan to collectively achieve unprecedented ocular power. Jobu then leads an Uchiha-only expedition into the Ōtsutsuki Main Family’s realm, where the clan faces ancient Ōtsutsuki elders in an interstellar war. 193 194
Future Konoha Era and Exile
In a later Konoha-era timeline, Jobu appears during the planned Uchiha massacre. The clan is divided between a war faction led by Setsuna and Fugaku and Itachi’s faction loyal to Konoha. Root and Anbu intervention escalates the crisis into open conflict. 139 141 142
Hiruzen ultimately permits the Uchiha to leave Konoha rather than risk war against Jobu and the clan’s Mangekyō users. Itachi remains behind as Konoha’s Uchiha, while Sasuke leaves with the clan after Itachi deliberately destroys their brotherly bond. 145 146
The Uchiha occupy the Land of Whirlpools and rebuild as an independent ninja village. They repel attacks from Kumogakure, Iwagakure, Konoha, Akatsuki, and the other major powers while raising new Mangekyō and Eternal Mangekyō users. 148 150 154 176 183
Transdimensional Expansion
After their cosmic campaigns, the Uchiha enter the Pirate World and establish themselves in Dressrosa. Their capture of several Four Emperors destabilizes the New World and causes the World Government to treat them as a threat comparable to the Rocks Pirates. 224 225
The clan rejects the Shichibukai system and the World Government’s demands to surrender its prisoners. Steel Bone Kong responds by dispatching more than one hundred warships, Sengoku, Tsuru, Admirals, and Admiral candidates against Dressrosa, but Madara, Izuna, and Setsuna meet the assault directly. 224

Trivia
- The clan’s reputation is openly described as domineering, overbearing, and poor compared with the Senju’s; Jobu argues that reputation matters less than strength in the Warring States Era. 5 37
- Uchiha members are portrayed as fiercely protective of fellow clansmen, contrasting them with the Chinoike Clan’s willingness to sacrifice even its own members as living bombs. 31
- Madara and Jobu are viewed as complementary figures: Madara provides military power and authority, while Jobu supplies strategy, diplomacy, and long-term planning. 9 13
- During the Warring States Era, the clan has several hundred members, but fewer than two hundred are capable of active combat; the disparity illustrates the period’s extreme mortality rate. 6
- The Uchiha’s later strength is so concentrated that Mangekyō Sharingan becomes the minimum qualification for participation in its interstellar campaign. 193 194
- The clan’s historical development repeatedly shifts between independence and centralized rule: it evolves from a mission-based Warring States clan into a village-founding power, an independent Land of Whirlpools faction, and eventually a transdimensional military force. 13 73 148 224
