Yang Wenqing unconsciously softened even his breathing as he walked in.
Chief Official Tang Jian sat behind his desk with a document spread before him. A cup of tea that had almost stopped steaming rested to his left.
Hearing footsteps at the door, he merely flicked his eyes toward Yang Wenqing before returning to the document and continuing his conversation with Ding Mu, who sat opposite him.
The two spoke in low voices. Snatches of their conversation drifted over, but Yang Wenqing caught only a few scattered words, not enough to follow its thread.
A staff member in a dark gray uniform hurried over, showed Yang Wenqing to a sofa in the reception area by the window, and brought him a cup of hot tea.
Lan Ying made herself as small as possible and lay quietly on Yang Wenqing's shoulder, her sapphire-blue eyes curiously taking in every corner of the office.
About five minutes later, the sound of a document closing came from the desk. Tang Jian stood and walked around it toward the reception area, with Ding Mu beside him.
Yang Wenqing immediately rose and stood at attention.
Tang Jian pressed a hand downward. "Relax. This is just a routine talk. No need to be so stiff."
His tone was neither warm nor cold. Ding Mu sat beside him, his expression giving little away.
"Sit."
Tang Jian sat first, then gestured toward Yang Wenqing. Once Yang Wenqing had sat down again, he said, "The Qian Bureau should have told you something already. The Cabinet has decided to establish a single Governor-General's District encompassing the Redstone Region, Windrider Island, Ironspine Island, and Dark Abyss Island. After weighing our options, we still think you're the best choice for its first governor-general."
