Ch. 521Reinforcements! The widening war!
Chapter summary
- The Redstone Archipelago becomes a forward base. During ten hours without new combat orders, Yang Wenqing oversees rapid construction: forests are cleared, barracks and defensive formations go up, and a temporary port and warehouses fill with supplies. The three fronts remain deadlocked, which Yang regards as unfavorable for the attacking side.
- The occupation brings administrative challenges. Zhou Mu reports that roughly 30,000 civilians—mostly former residents who remained after the Undersea Demon Clan withdrew—have been captured alongside Water Demons and rogue cultivators. Yang orders the civilians registered, divided among administrative districts, and assigned to labor camps for construction and logistical work, with official status to be considered later. Water Demons are to be released or detained according to their assessed threat.
- Reinforcements are confirmed. Headquarters directs Yang to build camps for two Guards. After consulting Kang He, he chooses islands at the northern and southern ends of the archipelago, positions that strengthen the flanks and provide staging points. His granduncle-master, Qian Xin, explains that two full-strength Guards from Torchsun Province will arrive as reserve and garrison forces under the Southern Frontier Theater. Separately, six third-realm cultivators are later dispatched to reinforce the front.
- Distant fighting signals the war’s escalation. Monitoring formations detect a brief exchange in the east involving at least six second-realm cultivators and traces of third-realm power. Kang He judges it a probe rather than a sustained engagement. Yang orders continued monitoring and then inspects the base.
- Yang tours the positions and steadies the troops. He checks the First Guard’s camp, the temple and City Defense Bureau, the busy port works, the Second Guard’s more compact blockade-focused camp, and the Water Police Detachment’s berthing area. He speaks with officers, workers, and ordinary soldiers, deliberately reassuring the rank and file. Zhao Tianlie reports that an aerial fortress has been established for the campaign against the Thunderclap Archipelago, suggesting that leaders may be accelerating the decisive battle. Yang avoids speculating and asks instead what his detachment needs.
- Personal and organizational transitions: Yang tells Jiang Wan that their foothold is secure and that he will leave for Zhongjing the next day because his vacation is over. His attention remains firmly on the campaign and its preparations.
Character development and interactions
Yang emerges as a disciplined, pragmatic commander: he balances military planning with civilian administration, delegates cleanup work to Zhou Mu, consults Kang He before choosing camp locations, and makes a personal circuit of the base to maintain morale. Qian Xin’s call confirms the government’s larger mobilization plans, while Yang’s exchanges with subordinates show a calm, practical leadership style. Lan Ying’s response to the distant spiritual disturbance emphasizes her sensitivity as a spirit beast.
