The hall was quiet as the waiters hurriedly handed out phones. This was big news. The building was silent and deserted, but the restaurant was a completely different scene.
The kitchen apprentices and runners who got the news immediately poured out. This was too exciting—two masters were going to compete in knife skills.
"Ha, Old Sun has nothing to do this morning anyway. Let's judge this match today. What do you think?"
"I think it works."
Sun Yating laughed. "I have no objections."
"Then let's begin." Song Jianjun waved a broad hand, as if he had found again the feeling of commanding thousands of troops and swallowing up the world like a tiger.
The apprentices immediately carried out the equipment. This was a live contest, so naturally they could not hold it in the kitchen. As soon as they moved, pedestrians outside noticed something was up. They came over to peer through the glass doors and—hey, there was a show to watch. The crowd instantly erupted. The bystanders who had merely come to watch drifted into the restaurant, gathering around with great enthusiasm. After hearing the waiters explain, every one of them got fired up.
Zhang Ye snorted coldly at Qin Fen. He was going all out today. He had already lost all the face he could lose, so he no longer cared about tearing things apart.
"Wang Wei, prepare my knife. I'm carving tofu." Zhang Ye's eyes gleamed as he immediately brought out his sect's secret technique.
"Got it." His apprentice was thrilled. This was a legendary skill.
"Carving tofu?" The two old men paused, then exchanged smiles. This was his signature technique. Interesting.
"Did you hear? He's going to carve tofu."
"Damn, you can carve flowers out of tofu? That's a godlike skill." The nearby pedestrians immediately boiled over, looking at Zhang Ye as if he were some kind of monster.
Zhang Ye raised a brow and walked to the table. He placed the tofu into cold water and picked up his knife. He had tremendous confidence in this contest. Tofu was not something just anyone could handle.
Just as he was thinking that, he held the tofu in his hand, and the crowd suddenly burst into heated discussion. Zhang Ye turned around, wanting to curse aloud, because Qin Fen had also put his hand into the water and picked up a block of tofu.
"Bastard, you're copying me!" Zhang Ye nearly threw up blood.
Qin Fen chuckled. It was not as if Zhang Ye was the only one who could carve tofu. "Of course. Since we're competing in knife skills, the difficulty should naturally be the same."
You bastard! Zhang Ye's face changed drastically, as though he had stepped in dog shit. A person could not be this shameless.
He did not dare let himself get distracted now. Qin Fen's knife work was fierce; one lapse in concentration could lead to failure. Zhang Ye took a deep breath, adjusted his state, and calmed himself down.
"Awesome! Both of them are carving tofu. Today's going to be a bloody battle."
"Exactly. It would have been one thing if only one of them was amazing. I thought he had this in the bag, but that guy is carving tofu too. This is too exciting."
"Keep it down. Don't disturb them."
Zhang Ye gathered his focus, and the knife in his hand plunged fiercely into the water. At this moment, nothing else existed for him. He focused all his energy on the contest and cast aside every distracting thought. Aside from his somewhat poor temperament, Zhang Ye's technique was indeed sharp.
"Qin Fen, you're carving tofu too?" Sun Yating was somewhat speechless. Wouldn't it be better to use Dual-Mindedness to carve winter melon? Tofu was incomparably more difficult than winter melon. One slight mistake could ruin everything.
"Yeah." Qin Fen looked up, but the knife in his hand suddenly began to move in a blur.
Damn, several pedestrians nearby stared in disbelief. Was he really competing?
"Why does it feel like he isn't competing at all? He's clearly just chatting." One passerby was stunned.
"Has he given up? Who competes like this?"
Sun Yating was no fool. The moment she saw Qin Fen's state, she smiled. Dual-Mindedness—again. She had guessed right. This was Qin Fen's most terrifying trait.
She wanted to help Qin Fen. First, she rather admired how seriously he worked; second, it was time to teach Zhang Ye a lesson. But she had no idea what to do at first. Then she suddenly came up with a bad idea: test his Dual-Mindedness. That way, one glance would reveal which of the two was superior.
The moment she spoke, the two old men's faces darkened. It was not good to interfere with a contestant like that. Knife skills were a test of concentration, especially when it came to tofu.
"Dear niece, isn't that a bit inappropriate?" Song Jianjun broke out in a cold sweat.
"Didn't you eat? Want something?" Sun Yating simply ignored Uncle Song.
"How about getting me a bun?" Qin Fen's expression turned strange after saying that. Following his gaze, Sun Yating spat lightly. Pervert, what was he thinking?
"Wait here. I'll go buy you one."
Watching their flirtatious exchange, the spectators nearly had a breakdown. Were they sure this was a competition? They were clearly flirting.
"A grown daughter can't be kept at home, Old Sun."
"Don't disturb the contestants."
Why had he not stopped his own daughter just now? No, Old Song was no child. He immediately noticed the strange thing about Qin Fen. Over there, Zhang Ye was fully focused, watching his nose and contemplating his heart as he carefully worked his knife bit by bit. Meanwhile, this one was not only talking, but was even planning to eat a bun!
The two men were startled at the same time. "Dual-Mindedness?"
The thought appeared in their minds. How insanely talented did someone have to be? He was carving tofu, yet he could still split his attention?
The two men's jaws dropped as they stared at Qin Fen with green eyes. This kid was truly a fucking talent.
Everyone looked at Qin Fen as if they had seen a ghost. Yet this guy remained utterly oblivious, carving while looking around here and there. Halfway through, he even wiped his hands, pulled out his phone, and checked the time.
Everyone watching was about to lose their minds when a man in his thirties walked in, followed by two lackeys. The instant he entered, he sensed something was wrong. What the hell was this? Why were there so many people here so early in the morning?
After looking around, he finally spotted the two old men. He had heard that his father, Song Jianjun, had come to eat at Uncle Sun's place, so he had rushed over. He was not here for a meal, but to find Sun Yating over a far more important matter.
"Dad, you're here." Song Shaoqing immediately called out.
Zhang Ye abruptly raised his head, then settled himself again. Qin Fen did not care and merely glanced at him.
The two old men turned at once. Song Jianjun's face changed. "Shut up. Don't disturb the competition."
A competition? Song Shaoqing froze, then noticed the two people at the table. Damn, they were both carving tofu. No wonder so many people were watching. This was an extremely difficult technique.
Just as he was about to quietly greet his father and uncle, he saw Song Jianjun beaming as he asked, "Little Qin, your knife skills are pretty good. How many years have you studied?"
"Not many years."
"How old are you this year? Do you have a girlfriend? You probably never had time to date before, right?"
"I'm doing all right. I just don't have much luck with women. A man should focus on his career."
"Well said. A good man need not worry about finding a wife. Don't be like your Uncle Sun, going to the countryside and ruining girls."
"What kind of nonsense is that? You're just jealous."
Song Shaoqing was dumbfounded. What was going on? His father had just told him to shut up, then turned around and started interfering with the competition himself. Could he not use two different standards?
Then he looked at Qin Fen and was completely stunned. How could this guy be so carefree? He was in a competition, yet he was chatting with his father? Looking at Qin Fen's hands again, he was even more shocked. Tofu scraps were rapidly dispersing bit by bit, but his hands never slowed. It was as if he were not carving what was known as the most difficult ingredient of all. Was he even human?
