Ch. 241Task Rewards
Plot points and events
- As the group approaches the imperial palace, they discuss the danger Jian Shang faces from Marquis Wuhuan and the political limits on anyone powerful enough to attack him. Jian Shang says he is confident he can survive unless a Divine Marquis intervenes.
- Li Xin offers Jian Shang support, suggesting that their alliance may benefit both sides in the future. The group reaches the palace amid a tense, militarized capital anticipating further upheaval.
- Princess Huating asks Jian Shang what reward he wants for escorting her safely home. He requests Immortal Elixirs and wondrous fruits first, with special-building blueprints as a secondary preference.
- Meng Tian leaves to report for duty but expresses concern for Jian Shang’s safety. Jian Shang reassures him.
- Lan Ying approaches Jian Shang on behalf of the Princess Residence to negotiate the division of spoils. Jian Shang generously suggests that the Residence take ninety percent and he take ten, easing any potential resentment.
- Palace officials summon Jian Shang and Demon Empress Ying Ying to receive their rewards. Jian Shang’s system notification says the mission reward was reduced to one-quarter because one target was lost: he receives five Centennial Vermilion Fruits, one point in each of four major attributes, 2,500 merit, and 2,500 prestige. The Princess Residence receives a much larger-looking bundle, a treasure sword, and a silk scroll.
Character developments and interactions
- Jian Shang shows confidence about his political and physical safety, accepts help from allies, and remains generous in negotiations. He is also anxious about facing Lan Ying because of her connection to someone close to him, but chooses to deal with her calmly.
- Li Zuo-che and Li Xin demonstrate concern and loyalty toward Jian Shang; Li Xin’s offer frames their relationship as a future mutual investment.
- Meng Tian acts protectively before departing for his duties.
- Princess Huating is appreciative and offers Jian Shang a chance to choose his reward, though she misunderstands his initial surprise.
- Lan Ying is nervous about negotiating for the Residence, reflecting the pressure of her superiors’ order. Jian Shang’s accommodating response reassures her and signals that the earlier cooperation has not left lasting grievances.
- The Princess Residence and Jian Shang maintain outwardly cordial relations while carefully avoiding questions about each other’s rewards.
Significant themes
- Political uncertainty and power: Even powerful figures must consider the Emperor, court factions, and the consequences of open conflict.
- Growing up and responsibility: The narration contrasts the younger characters’ impulsiveness with the caution that comes with greater duties and political exposure.
- Alliance and reciprocity: Trust is built through support, fair-mindedness, and gestures of goodwill—not merely through dividing material rewards.
- Status and obligation: Lan Ying’s discomfort highlights how hierarchy can compel people to act against their own preferences.
- Merit and reward: The reduced mission payout underscores the costs of failure, while the unclear distribution between Jian Shang and the Residence leaves the Empire’s reward system opaque.
