Ch. 601Leisurely Life
Chapter Summary: “Leisurely Life”
- A drunken gathering: Xiao Ying, Zhao Jiang, and Lin Qianlian spend the evening drinking heavily. Zhao Jiang becomes extremely intoxicated and repeatedly toasts Xiao Ying, calling him a good brother and asking him to look after him. Xiao Ying agrees, despite their differing personalities, because they are neighbors and connected through Lin Qianlian.
- Xiao Ying’s restrained power: Although Xiao Ying appears drunk, his cultivation could instantly dispel the alcohol. He deliberately allows himself to remain intoxicated because he enjoys the rare, relaxed atmosphere. His thoughts also reveal that he believes blessings and power must match a person’s fate: giving Zhao Jiang a powerful cultivation technique or treasure too early could bring disaster rather than benefit.
- Conflict between Zhao Jiang and Lin Qianlian: Lin Qianlian warns Xiao Ying not to take Zhao Jiang’s drunken promises or practical, somewhat snobbish attitude too seriously. She worries that Xiao Ying’s help may be beyond what Zhao Jiang can safely endure. Zhao Jiang overhears this and angrily accuses Lin Qianlian of looking down on him and holding him back. Lin becomes hurt and falls silent, while Xiao Ying attempts to calm both of them and end the night.
- Lin Qianlian’s emotional turmoil: After the drinking session, Lin remains with Xiao Ying. Their closeness and the dramatic changes surrounding Xiao Ying have stirred complicated feelings in her. An implied intimate encounter begins, but Lin suddenly opens her eyes and looks directly at him, creating a tense, silent moment that suggests hesitation, inner conflict, and uncertainty about their relationship.
- Return to the outside crisis: Unable to sleep, Xiao Ying turns on the computer and reads alarming reports about the Cyan Poison Rain, spiritual rain, prophecies, earthquakes, sinkholes, Earth’s possible expansion, and an approaching apocalypse. Outside, residents are panic-buying supplies, while police struggle to maintain order and isolated looting begins.
- Xiao Ying’s frustration and resignation: Overwhelmed by the uncertainty and inactivity, Xiao Ying smokes while watching the crowds below. He briefly wishes the apocalypse would simply arrive, then reminds himself that life must continue and decides to wash up and sleep. The chapter closes on a more vulnerable note, with tears suggesting buried sorrow or emotional strain.
Character Development and Themes
- Xiao Ying: Despite his immense power, he longs for ordinary companionship and deliberately enjoys a simple evening with friends. He is generous but cautious, understanding that power given without sufficient fate or preparation can destroy the recipient. His composure also cracks as the impending crisis and personal emotions begin to weigh on him.
- Zhao Jiang: His drunken behavior exposes insecurity and ambition beneath his bluster. He wants Xiao Ying’s recognition and protection but resents being treated as someone who cannot bear Xiao Ying’s help.
- Lin Qianlian: She acts protectively toward both men but is emotionally conflicted. Her warning about Zhao Jiang reveals practical concern, while her reaction to Xiao Ying shows growing affection, hesitation, and fear of the consequences of becoming too close.
- Major themes: The chapter contrasts a fleeting “leisurely life” with the looming apocalypse; explores friendship, obligation, and the dangers of unequal power; and emphasizes fate, destiny, emotional restraint, and the desire to preserve normal human connections during extraordinary upheaval.
