On the afternoon of the third day, Cass learned that one of the two students in the same dormitory had stopped breathing. That night, the other one died as well. He waited at the corner of the corridor outside the infirmary for a third-year student responsible for helping the school doctor organize death records to pass by.

His target soon appeared. A bespectacled boy with two metal pins fastened to the inside of his school robe emerged from the other end of the corridor and headed for the stairs.

Cass called out to him from behind. When the boy turned around, his expression was fairly calm. Speaking of the causes of death, he said the school had yet to reach a conclusion. When asked when the discomfort had begun, he answered that it had started on the second night. At first, the victim had merely felt that his arms were somewhat heavy and had assumed it was because he had not rested well the previous day. Another day later, his breathing became unstable. The school doctor had given him a stabilizer, but it still failed to prevent his condition from worsening.

Cass nodded after listening. As he watched the boy turn and disappear into the shadows at the end of the corridor, he said, "Thanks for your hard work." Then he remained where he was until he was certain it was safe before heading off in another direction.

The school doctor's investigation report was enough for him to basically confirm that the school would never find the answer.
