Yu An opened the door and looked at He Li'an without saying a word.
He rarely found himself this speechless.
He Li'an looked completely at ease and broke the silence first. "I came to bring you some things."
Only then did Yu An notice the pile of cardboard boxes by He Li'an's feet. Stacked together, it was even bigger than the one Song Yuechi had brought.
"Why did you suddenly come to bring me things?" He had never asked He Li'an for anything, so he found it hard to understand.
He Li'an's expression tightened slightly, as though he was somewhat displeased, but his tone remained gentle and calm. "Move aside. I'll carry them in for you."
Had this man not heard what he said?
When Yu An did not move, He Li'an reached out, took him by the shoulders, and directly guided him aside before starting to carry the things inside.
Yu An: ...
He watched helplessly as He Li'an moved everything inside, then thoughtfully pulled him in as well and casually shut the door.
He Li'an began unpacking the boxes for him.
"These headphones have excellent noise cancellation. You'll need them when you study at the library."
"This computer's performance is ideal for processing and calculating data. This one can be used for entertainment..."
The boxes contained all sorts of things. There were many different kinds, all things Yu An did not have but might need. As He Li'an unpacked them, he explained what each one was for.
"And this perfume. It was out of stock before, so I had to transfer it in from elsewhere. That took some time, which is why it only arrived today." He Li'an handed the perfume to Yu An.
Yu An took it and examined the packaging, only to find that it was the kind He Li'an usually used.
He had thought it smelled nice before and had asked to spray some on himself.
He had not expected He Li'an to specifically buy a bottle for him.
No one had ever done something like this for him.
He was starting to believe Song Yuechi's guess a little. He Li'an might like him.
Seeing that he said nothing and merely stared at him thoughtfully, He Li'an asked, "What is it?"
Yu An rubbed the perfume box, his gaze resting quietly on him. "Why did you buy perfume for me?"
He Li'an chuckled. "Don't you like this scent?"
Yu An pressed on. "Why do you have to buy it for me just because I like it?"
He Li'an's smile did not fade. "When you give someone a gift, naturally you buy them something they like."
"Why are you giving me a gift?" Yu An's gaze remained calm and unruffled.
The successive questions made him seem rather aggressive.
He Li'an studied Yu An for a moment, his expression cooling slightly. "As your senior, it's only natural to give you a housewarming gift when you move into a new place."
"You've already given me a lot. I know that many things in this room were bought by you." Although He Li'an had not said so outright, Yu An could infer from the furniture's style and quality that He Li'an was behind it.
He Li'an glanced around the room, wholly unconcerned. "You should know that these things are nothing to me."
Indeed, given his wealth, all of those things put together were but a drop in the bucket.
Perhaps because he had not received the answer he wanted, Yu An felt a little unhappy.
His voice was subdued. "Oh. Thank you, Senior."
That "Senior" carried an unusual degree of respect.
It lacked the usual boldness with which he called He Li'an by his full name, and it also lacked any sense of closeness.
He Li'an frowned tightly. "You're welcome."
"Stop working for now. Have some water and rest a while." After saying that, Yu An turned around to pour some water.
He Li'an stopped what he was doing and watched his back.
The longer he looked, the more dejected Yu An's back seemed.
He Li'an unconsciously clenched his fist. Had he sounded too cold just now?
Yu An brought over a glass of water and handed it to He Li'an. "Senior, what do you want to eat for lunch?"
He Li'an was slightly distracted. "Hm?"
Yu An said, "I'll treat you to a meal. You gave me so many things and helped me find this apartment. I should thank you."
He Li'an could afford anything, so Yu An could only express his gratitude by treating him to a meal.
"No need, I..." He Li'an did not want Yu An to spend money. He wanted to say that they could eat together, but Yu An did not need to pay.
Who knew that as soon as he had said the first part, Yu An nodded decisively. "All right, then."
He Li'an's expression stiffened for a moment.
"I'll sort out the rest myself. I still need to memorize my lessons this afternoon. You can leave after you finish your water." Yu An had a face that was far too obedient and innocent-looking. Even though he was ruthlessly sending someone away, it was impossible to get angry at him.
"Fine." He Li'an practically squeezed the word out of his throat.
When Yu An met Song Yuechi at school on Monday, he was still a little unhappy, so he told Song Yuechi about it.
Song Yuechi immediately perked up. He held two fingers in a V beneath his chin and declared confidently, "I told you he likes you!!!"
Yu An looked at him expressionlessly.
Song Yuechi explained excitedly, "You posted the things I gave you on your social media, and right afterward, he brought you a whole pile of things. That's jealousy-driven competitiveness!"
"He said those things were nothing." Mentioning this made Yu An frown unhappily.
Song Yuechi patted his shoulder and comforted him. "Men are all stubborn and refuse to admit things. Don't be upset. He definitely likes you."
Yu An still did not show much expression.
Song Yuechi sighed. "Don't be sad over a man. He's not worth it."
Yu An finally reacted. "Who?"
Song Yuechi froze for a moment. "You. Aren't you sad because you think He Li'an doesn't like you?"
Yu An was shocked. "Am I?"
Song Yuechi gestured with both hands in front of him, then nodded emphatically. "You are!"
Yu An muttered in confusion, "How could this happen..."
Seeing his devastated expression, Song Yuechi asked worriedly, "What's wrong?"
Yu An asked faintly, "The reason people feel sad because of another person is that they like them, right?"
Song Yuechi said, "Right."
The books said that liking someone would make you feel sad.
So it really was true.
But this was not part of his plan.
He did not want to like anyone. He did not want to become a sad person. He only wanted to take shortcuts and become someone who reaped rewards without working and enjoyed success without effort.
He Li'an had already investigated him and knew that his family background was ordinary. It was too late to change his plan and make up some wealthy background.
Seeing Yu An look utterly hopeless, Song Yuechi became extremely worried. "What's wrong, baby? Are you okay?"
Yu An said expressionlessly, "I don't want to live anymore."
Song Yuechi knew Yu An was not someone who liked joking around. His face turned pale with fright. "What happened? What could be so serious? Tell me. I'll help you figure out a way."
Yu An stared steadily at Song Yuechi for a moment, then shook his head. "It's fine. I can keep living a little longer."
He had gained a good friend like Song Yuechi in this world. Dying casually now seemed somewhat impolite.
As for He Li'an.
It was not too late to turn back now.
At worst, he would work a little harder, become a diligent person, and earn money himself.
Song Yuechi said, "Huh?"
