Ch. 221Underhanded Beyond Belief

Plot points

  • Black-Robed Sparta attacks Scientist Sparta, demanding to know where Clayton and Nolan are. Scientist insists he has never heard of them and offers to help, but Black-Robed Sparta assumes he is lying.
  • Black-Robed Sparta charges. Scientist dodges and urges Tardis to flee, but Tardis attacks to protect him. Black-Robed Sparta swats Tardis through metal racks and a wall, leaving his fate unknown.
  • Scientist fights back but is badly outmatched. Black-Robed Sparta’s rage over Clayton and Nolan’s absence makes him grow stronger, and he beats Scientist through the hidden laboratory, causing the mountain around it to collapse.
  • Scientist escapes the rubble and challenges Black-Robed Sparta’s conduct, asking whether Clayton and Nolan would approve of him killing innocent people. The question briefly unsettles Black-Robed Sparta, then enrages him further.
  • Unable to escape and unwilling to give up, Scientist turns to fight. The chapter ends as their fists collide in a midair clash that sends a shock wave through the surrounding landscape.

Character developments and interactions

  • Scientist Sparta remains protective of Tardis and tries to reason with his attacker, but shifts from evasion to defiance when he realizes escape is futile.
  • Black-Robed Sparta is consumed by grief and rage over Clayton and Nolan. His extreme emotional reactions continually amplify his strength, making him increasingly dangerous and seemingly unreachable through reason.
  • Tardis bravely tries to defend Scientist Sparta but is quickly overwhelmed and hurled out of sight.
  • The conflict between the two Spartas escalates from a misunderstanding into a desperate fight, while Scientist’s mention of Clayton and Nolan exposes how painful those names are to Black-Robed Sparta.

Significant themes

  • Grief turning into violence: Black-Robed Sparta’s loss drives him to attack people who have no connection to it.
  • Emotion as power—and danger: His anger and anguish literally make him stronger, turning emotional escalation into a self-reinforcing threat.
  • Reason versus force: Scientist Sparta’s attempts to explain himself and appeal to Black-Robed Sparta’s conscience fail, forcing him to fight back.

Ch. 222Your Gift

Plot points and events

  • Nolan nervously asks Debbie out to dinner by text. Her teasing reply makes him think she has accepted a date, and he is delighted.
  • Unsure how to prepare, he researches dating advice, changes outfits repeatedly, and tries to learn what to say.
  • Taking “bring a distinctive gift” too literally, Nolan uproots a small tree from his yard and carries it to their meeting place.
  • Debbie arrives, amused and surprised by the unusual gift. Nolan sincerely offers her the tree and suggests planting it in her yard—or even her room, promising it will not die.
  • Cecil watches the encounter through the Global Defense Bureau’s surveillance system and privately marvels at how bizarre Nolan’s date is.

Character developments

  • Nolan’s fearsome, controlled public persona gives way to awkward excitement. He is inexperienced and earnest, treating dating advice like instructions for a mission.
  • Debbie responds with warmth and humor. Though she finds the tree ridiculous, she recognizes that Nolan’s gesture is sincere and treats it gently.
  • Cecil remains the skeptical observer, exasperated by Nolan’s unconventional behavior.

Significant themes

  • Vulnerability and affection: Nolan’s nervousness reveals a tender, unfamiliar side beneath his powerful image.
  • Sincerity versus social convention: His gift is absurd by ordinary standards, but its sincerity matters more to Debbie than its appropriateness.
  • Humor through contrast: Nolan approaches romance with the seriousness of a warrior, while everyday dating customs—and the observers’ reactions—make his efforts comically awkward.

Character interactions

  • Nolan and Debbie’s exchange balances his earnestness with her teasing, affectionate amusement; she neither rejects him nor mocks his feelings.
  • Cecil’s surveillance creates a humorous outside perspective on their private, awkwardly public meeting.

Ch. 223Arrival

Cecil put Earth’s defenses on alert when Black-Robed Sparta arrived and raced toward a city, but Nolan ignored the Bureau’s calls to keep his dinner with Debbie uninterrupted. The chapter ended with Nolan choosing not to respond as Sparta approached.

  • Cecil ordered Donald to monitor Nolan and activated Earth’s defenses after detecting an unidentified faster-than-light signal.
  • Black-Robed Sparta landed in a desert, scanned for a target, and headed west toward a city.
  • Nolan took Debbie to an expensive restaurant and reassured her that their meal was covered.
  • Cecil identified Sparta as an extreme threat and sent the Guardians after him, but they could not keep up.
  • Cecil contacted Nolan for help, but he crushed his earpiece and continued his dinner with Debbie.
