Background

Jiraiya spent much of his life wandering the Shinobi World while writing Make-Out Paradise and pursuing Mount Myōboku’s prophecy of the “Child of Prophecy.” Although Hiruzen Sarutobi repeatedly considered him a successor for the Hokage position, Jiraiya refused because he disliked Konoha’s political struggles and feared that authority would change him as it had changed his teacher. 8 15

The Great Toad Sage’s inability to foresee the future ended Jiraiya’s lifelong mission. Told that the Child of Prophecy no longer existed in the foretold sense, he was left without the purpose that had guided him for years. After two days of uncertainty, he returned to Konoha hoping that he might still help change the village. 8 15

Appearance

Jiraiya is a white-haired shinobi whose Sage Mode gives him a distinctly toad-like appearance. 27 77

  • White hair. 27
  • In his original Sage Mode, Fukasaku and Shima stand on his shoulders. 77
  • Sage Mode produces wart-like facial features, a trait Hiruzen mockingly uses to call it “Toad Mode.” 78

Personality

Jiraiya is carefree, boastful, and openly lecherous, often provoking Tsunade into attacking him. He envies Hiruzen’s rejuvenated appearance, worries about being left single while his peers find partners, and remains eager to collect “inspiration” for his writing. 42 48 53

Behind this behavior, he is compassionate and deeply affected by failure. The collapse of the prophecy leaves him adrift, while memories of Minato, Yahiko, and Nagato make him reluctant to repeat past mistakes with younger shinobi. 8 31

His return to Konoha gradually makes him more politically pragmatic. He initially objects to Orochimaru’s coercive treatment of weaker villages, but comes to accept that strength, intelligence, and deterrence are necessary to defend Konoha. Even as Konoha’s external “darkness,” he retains personal limits and refuses work that crosses his bottom line. 58 75 146

Abilities & Skills

Sage Mode and Mount Myōboku Arts

Jiraiya is a Mount Myōboku sage whose combat style originally relies heavily on toad summons and natural energy.

  • Requires Fukasaku and Shima’s assistance to maintain his original Sage Mode for extended periods. 77 78
  • Uses Sage Art: Hair Needle Senbon and Sage Art: Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan. 77
  • Can summon powerful toads including Gamahiro and Gamabunta. 77 177
  • Employs a broad range of specialized toads, including the Rock-Dwelling Great Toad’s stomach for trapping and digesting opponents. 80
  • After Orochimaru’s modifications, can enter a stronger Sage Mode without relying on Fukasaku and Shima. 176

Rinnegan and Six Paths Techniques

Orochimaru’s enhancements grant Jiraiya a Golden Rinnegan and access to advanced Six Paths abilities.

  • Creates Black Rods that disrupt the chakra transmission controlling Nagato’s Six Paths of Pain. 177
  • Uses Universal Pull to seize enemies, though Obito’s Intangibility and Black Zetsu’s escape methods can evade it. 178
  • Counters Nagato’s Almighty Push with a stronger version of the same technique. 177
  • Opens Yomotsu Hirasaka for interdimensional travel. 176 178
  • Absorbs and devours chakra. 176
  • Possesses partially awakened time-based abilities derived from Urashiki Ōtsutsuki. 203

Sealing Techniques

Jiraiya is an accomplished sealing specialist, with techniques partly learned from Kushina Uzumaki. 86

  • Seals Killer B’s chakra and prevents him from transforming into the Eight-Tails. 28
  • Assists in sealing the Three-Tails into Kisame Hoshigaki. 86
  • Combines chakra, Black Rods, barriers, and sealing techniques with Nagato to restrain the weakened Kaguya Ōtsutsuki. 268

Combat and Tactical Skill

Jiraiya is regarded as the strongest of the Legendary Sannin before his modification, possessing versatile Kage-level combat ability. 76

  • Defeated Killer B’s force alongside Konoha shinobi and helped secure the Eight-Tails alive. 27 28
  • Uses intelligence on the Six Paths of Pain to dismantle them efficiently rather than confronting them blindly. 177
  • Cripples Kakuzu and breaks Zabuza Momochi’s Executioner’s Blade with Sage Mode and Rinnegan-enhanced speed. 178
  • Can use Black Rods to counter Logia Devil Fruit users more directly than Armament Haki by sealing their elementalized bodies. 203

Equipment & Items

  • Medicinal pills — Pills tailored for ninja constitutions that rapidly heal injuries and restore chakra. 184

  • Orochimaru — Fellow Legendary Sannin and ideological opposite. They renew their partnership after Root’s dissolution, with Orochimaru later modifying Jiraiya’s body and expanding his power. 16 58 172
  • Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and longtime comrade. Jiraiya is attracted to her, but their incompatible personalities and his lecherous behavior prevent a relationship. 42 53
  • Fukasaku and Shima — Mount Myōboku’s elder toads who support and maintain Jiraiya’s original Sage Mode. 8 77 78
  • Shisui Uchiha — Disciple. Jiraiya mentors Shisui as both a shinobi and a bridge between Konoha and the Uchiha Clan. 31 32 83

  • Kisame Hoshigaki — Jiraiya helps make Kisame the Three-Tails jinchūriki, strengthening both Hidden Mist and Konoha’s influence there. 85 86

Prophecy’s End and Return to Konoha

After the Great Toad Sage declares the prophecy obsolete, Jiraiya abandons his search for the Child of Prophecy and returns to Konoha. Orochimaru challenges him to stop avoiding responsibility, then gives him the mission of finding Tsunade and bringing her back to lead the Medical Division. 8 15 16

Jiraiya returns with Tsunade and accepts command of Konoha’s military forces under Orochimaru’s leadership. He later commits himself to improving Konoha and returns to the front lines. 22 24

Mentor of Shisui and the Eight-Tails Operation

The Valley of the End Spar

Orochimaru arranges a secret spar between Jiraiya and Hiruzen at the Valley of the End. Jiraiya opens with Sage Mode, Hair Needle Senbon, Gamahiro, and an Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan, but Hiruzen overwhelms him with cultivation techniques and heavenly lightning. 77 78

Jiraiya concedes after his right arm is seriously injured. The loss exposes the limits of his assisted Sage Mode and renews his determination to find meaning beyond prophecy. 78

Konoha’s Influence in the Hidden Mist

Jiraiya leads Konoha’s intervention in the Hidden Mist under the pretense of providing aid. He uses Shisui’s victory over Fuguki Suikazan and Konoha’s overwhelming force to pressure Mei Terumī into negotiations. 83 84

Orochimaru’s Modification and the Fall of Akatsuki

Seeking a longer life and new purpose in interworld exploration, Jiraiya volunteers for Orochimaru’s Ōtsutsuki and Sage Arts experiment. The procedure lets him use Sage Mode freely and grants him Rinnegan abilities. 172 176

He travels to the Hidden Rain to confront Nagato and Konan. With prior intelligence on the Six Paths of Pain, Jiraiya overwhelms Akatsuki, exposes the weaknesses behind Nagato’s “godhood,” and forces a surrender by threatening—but refusing to destroy—the Hidden Rain Village. 176 177 178

Jiraiya returns to Konoha with Nagato, Konan, Kakuzu, and Zabuza. His victory establishes him as one of Konoha’s strongest heroes and a major pillar of its expanding power. 180

Interworld Expeditions

Jiraiya leads Konoha’s early expedition into the One Piece World, where he seeks intelligence, Devil Fruits, and an understanding of its power system. He challenges Marine Vice Admiral Garp through Shisui rather than fighting him personally. 186 187

He later captures Garp and Admiral Aokiji and returns with them through Yomotsu Hirasaka, allowing Konoha to begin gathering intelligence and stabilizing a permanent passage into the new world. 190 192

Kaguya’s Capture
