The whistle for the charge pierced straight into Chu Hang's eardrums.
Before he could digest the astonishing fact that he had copied Wolverine's abilities, someone shoved him hard in the back with a rifle butt. A massive force pushed him into a stumble, sending him rolling directly out of the shell crater.
"Move it, newbie! You wanna stay here and be a target?!" a raspy voice roared beside his ear.
Chu Hang's mind went blank. Acting entirely on instinct, he followed the swaying figure in front of him, running forward with heavy, unsteady steps through the churned-up, muddy ground.
He clutched the cold, heavy rifle in his arms tightly. That thing was no different from an iron rod in his hands; he didn't even know how to fire it, so he could only use it as his sole psychological comfort.
Once he left the shelter of the crater, the entire world seemed to have turned into a living hell.
Bullets zipped past his head, his ears, and his legs, their sharp screeches making his scalp tingle.
Explosions erupted one after another not far away, each loud bang accompanied by a ball of fire and black smoke soaring into the sky. Hot heatwaves mixed with soil and shattered stones slammed fiercely into his face.
The thick smell of gunpowder and blood in the air made his tears stream down uncontrollably. His throat felt burning hot, as if he had inhaled crushed glass instead of air.
He saw a young soldier near him who had been charging forward just a moment ago suddenly lose his entire upper body, blown into a mist of blood by an artillery shell that came from nowhere.
That warm liquid splattered all over Chu Hang's face—sticky and carrying a fishy stench that made his stomach churn violently.
An unprecedented terror reached in from all directions, tightly pinching his throat and making it almost impossible for him to breathe.
As an ordinary person who grew up in an era of peace, where had he ever seen this kind of scene? The wars in movies were simply child's play compared to this fucking real battlefield.
He wanted to scream, to turn around and run, to dig a hole and bury himself. Yet in this chaotic meat grinder, he could do nothing at all.
All he could do was mimic the others, bending his waist like a shrimp and running forward for dear life.
His gaze instinctively locked onto the most conspicuous target—that tough guy with a cigar in his mouth and bone claws springing from his hands, Logan.
This guy completely ignored the crisscrossing fire nets of the German Army, pushing forward with unstoppable momentum.
Bullets hit his solid chest, only splashing out tiny flowers of blood, and then he would shake his body as if nothing had happened and continue to emit beast-like roars.
Follow him! You have to stay close to him! Chu Hang had only this single thought left in his mind. On this fatal battlefield, this unkillable monster was his only chance of survival.
He pushed his whole body to its limits, staying closely behind Logan at a short distance.
Logan drew most of the firepower, and with Chu Hang following behind him, the pressure on the latter plummeted.
Even so, danger remained omnipresent. A stray bullet drilled out from some corner and struck his left shoulder.
"Ah!" Chu Hang let out a miserable scream, and a piercing, agonizing pain instantly spread through his entire body.
He felt as though his left arm had been seared by a red-hot branding iron, and then his entire shoulder lost all sensation. He staggered and tumbled heavily into the muddy ground.
He lay on the ground, trembling all over from the pain. Looking down, he saw that the military uniform on his left shoulder had a hole torn in it, and fresh blood was gushing out as if it were free, quickly staining the soil beneath him a dark red.
It's over... His mind went blank as a strong sense of weightlessness and dizziness washed over him. He knew this was the precursor to excessive blood loss. Where is the Healing Factor? Why isn't it working?
Just as his consciousness began to blur, a familiar, agonizingly bizarre itch came from deep within the wound. That feeling was even harder to bear than when the bullet had burrowed in, as though countless ants were frantically gnawing at his bones and flesh.
He let out a muffled groan from the pain, but a surge of wild joy welled up in his heart.
He could feel it! The Healing Factor was working!
He endured the indescribable pain and itch, staring fixedly at his wound. He could feel the muscles and blood vessels inside the wound frantically writhing, intertwining, and regenerating.
The bullet head embedded in the gaps of his bone was forcefully squeezed out by the newly grown flesh, dropping into the muddy water with a clank.
He moved his left arm; aside from a lingering soreness and numbness, he could no longer feel any pain or injury.
Only then did he understand that the Healing Factor could not make him immune to pain, nor could it make him impervious to blades and guns.
"Damn it, this ability... it doesn't even block the pain, what absolute trash." Chu Hang grinned and climbed up from the muddy ground.
After going through such an ordeal, his courage actually grew. Since he couldn't die anyway, what was there to be afraid of?
He raised his head and searched for Logan's figure. Soon, he spotted Logan, who was being pinned down beneath an exploded earthen slope ahead.
A German Army MG42 heavy machine gun was set up in a makeshift fortification piled with sandbags, spitting out long tongues of fire.
The barrage formed by that terrifying rate of fire was like a wall of death, firmly pinning Logan behind the earthen slope and sending mud and gravel flying all around him.
Although Logan tried to rush out again and again, he was driven back each time by the dense bullets, continually adding new wounds to his body.
His formidable healing ability appeared somewhat stretched to the limit in the face of this continuous, high-intensity firepower.
Chu Hang's heart leaped instantly into his throat. He knew very well that Logan was his only amulet right now. If Logan was crippled by this machine gun, he himself wouldn't be far from death either.
Help him? How? He didn't even know how to chamber a round in the rifle he held. If he charged straight at them, he'd probably be riddled with holes before running two steps.
His gaze swept swiftly across the chaotic battlefield, finally landing on the entrenching tool beside a corpse at his feet. The edge of that shovel gleamed with a cold glint under the firelight.
A crazy thought suddenly popped out from his heart.
His biggest advantage was that he couldn't die. Since that was the case, why not make use of this point?
He hesitated no longer, gritted his teeth, and grabbed the mud-covered entrenching tool. He crouched low, using the surrounding pitted terrain and scattered corpses everywhere as cover, and began to sneak toward that frantically roaring machine gun nest from the flank, step by step.
His heart thumped wildly in his chest, almost about to jump out of his throat. Every step forward felt like dancing on the blade of a knife.
Several times, bullets grazed right past his scalp, the wind they whipped up making his cheeks sting fiercely.
The German machine gunner's attention was entirely captured by Logan; in his wildest dreams, he would never have imagined that someone would dare to sneak over from the open flank.
Closer, even closer. Chu Hang could even see the machine gunner's flushed face, red with excitement and tension.
Right now!
Chu Hang took a deep breath, mustered the greatest courage of his life, and suddenly leaped out from behind the carcass of a horse. Gripping the entrenching tool tightly with both hands, he let out a roar that even he found unfamiliar, using all his strength to slam the heavy shovel head viciously down toward the back of the machine gunner's head.
"Bang!"
A dull, teeth-setting thud echoed. The German soldier's head was like a smashed watermelon, his steel helmet dented in a large patch. Without even letting out a groan, he slumped softly over the machine gun.
The assistant gunner beside him was scared out of his wits by the sudden turn of events. Staring in terror at Chu Hang, who had appeared like a demon from hell, he instinctively reached to pull the pistol at his waist.
Chu Hang's eyes were bloodshot by this point. He pulled out the entrenching tool and, without looking, swung it back in a horizontal sweep. The edge of the shovel bit solidly into the fellow's neck.
With a crisp crack, the assistant gunner's head drooped at a bizarre angle.
Having eliminated the two men, Chu Hang felt as though all the strength in his entire body had been drained away. His legs went soft, and he slumped heavily into the blood-stained mud, the entrenching tool dropping aside. Looking at the two corpses collapsed at his feet, his stomach churned violently, and with a retch, he vomited out all the oatmeal he had eaten that morning. He trembled uncontrollably, unable to tell whether it was due to fear or the physiological reaction after killing a man.
The roar of the machine gun ceased abruptly, and an instantaneous silence seemed to fall over the battlefield.
Logan, whose pressure had suddenly vanished, noticed immediately. He leaped up from behind the earthen slope and rushed to the machine gun nest in a few strides. He saw the fallen German soldiers, then saw Chu Hang sitting on the ground with a pale face and trembling body, along with the pool of vomit beside him.
A complex expression appeared on Logan's fierce face. Without speaking, he simply walked over to Chu Hang, extended a palm as big as a cattail-leaf fan, and hauled him straight up from the ground.
"Kid, not bad," he said in a raspy voice, then heavily patted Chu Hang's shoulder twice. "Got guts."
Chu Hang was staggered by the pats, forced out a dry laugh, and couldn't say a single word.
The battle ended half an hour later. They had seized this position at a heavy price. The surviving soldiers collapsed onto the ground one by one, completely exhausted; no one spoke, and only heavy gasps and the groans of the wounded filled the air.
Logan fished out a bottle of whiskey from somewhere, unscrewed the cap, took a fierce swig, and then handed the bottle to Chu Hang.
Chu Hang hesitated for a moment, took it, and imitated his action by taking a gulp. The spicy liquid burned like fire from his throat down to his stomach, making him cough violently, yet that burning sensation chased away much of the chill deep in his heart.
With his signature cigar clamped in his mouth, Logan squatted beside Chu Hang, eyeing him with narrowed eyes, and spoke only after a long moment: "I saw you get shot, right in the shoulder. Where's the wound?"
Chu Hang's heart skipped a beat, knowing that what must come had arrived. He had already prepared his excuse and said with feigned calmness, "I don't know what's going on either. It's been like this since I was a kid; no matter how severe the injury, a night's sleep fixes it. It heals much faster than other people."
Hearing this, Logan gave him a deep look, his gaze as sharp as if it could pierce the human heart. He didn't press further, only nodding. Everyone had their own secrets, especially in a ghost place like this; being able to survive was the absolute truth. From Chu Hang, he had smelled the scent of a "monster" similar to himself.
He blew out a smoke ring and extended that calloused, scarred hand toward Chu Hang: "You saved my life. My name is Logan."
Looking at him, Chu Hang also reached out and shook it firmly: "Chu Hang."
Afterward, Chu Hang and Logan became inseparable partners. One charged ahead and drew firepower in the front lines like a tank, while the other harassed and ambushed on the flanks using his unkillable trait like a ghost. Their combination shone brilliantly in several battles over the next two days, with a frighteningly high efficiency.
On the third day at dusk, having just repelled a counterattack by the German Army, they were leaning in a trench sharing a canned beef. An officer wearing a bowler hat and sporting a signature mustache, surrounded by a squad of soldiers, walked straight up to them.
The officer's uniform was crisp and neat, his leather boots polished to a shine, looking completely out of place in the muddy, bloody environment around him. He looked down from above at Chu Hang and Logan, who were covered in mud and devouring their food, a playful smile playing on his lips.
"Gentlemen," he began, his voice clear and forceful, "are you interested in changing locations and doing a more interesting job?"
