Thud! Thud! Thud!
Every time the heavy military boots slammed into the ground, it was like a battering ram pounding a war drum.
The entire narrow underground passage groaned under the frantic sprint of these three humanoid self-propelled weapons, as if it could no longer bear the strain.
Dust cascaded from the walls, constantly shaken loose. The dim blast-proof lights overhead flickered wildly under the violent tremors, occasionally letting out a pitiful electrical crackle before plunging completely into darkness.
The flickering light was like a malfunctioning film projector, stretching, twisting, and slicing their figures across the cold steel walls into frame after frame of violent, blurry ghosts charging out of hell.
The air was thick with a complicated smell.
There was the metallic tang and pungent ozone, along with a faint trace of blood.
Chu Hang felt no fatigue.
Not even a little.
The explosive power brought by the Super-Soldier Serum roared and surged like floodwaters bursting through a dam in every muscle fiber of his body.
His heart pounded like a war drum struck by a giant. Every powerful beat pumped scorching blood through his limbs, bringing waves of tingling exhilaration as his strength surged.
Meanwhile, Logan's Healing Factor was like an inexhaustible nuclear furnace, incinerating the tearing agony caused by every overloaded muscle movement the instant it appeared and transforming it into purer, more violent power!
Destruction and rebirth, all at once!
The extreme sensation of pain and exhilaration nearly made him throw back his head and howl!
He looked at the blue figure running at the front, and only one word came to mind: maniac.
Steve Rogers, I almost thought you'd stepped out of some absurd anti-Japanese war TV drama.
Chu Hang could feel that his knockoff serum was already powerful enough, but compared to the genuine article ahead of him, it still seemed to lack something essential.
It was probably Marvel's protagonist buff on Steve.
And running almost shoulder to shoulder with Steve was Logan.
He looked like a saber-toothed tiger that had leaped out of some prehistoric jungle, every ounce of his savagery on display.
Three pale Bone Claws had long since sprung out, dragging dazzling cold glints through the darkness. A bloodthirsty growl rumbled in his throat, and every breath left a cloud of scorching white vapor.
His senses were sharper than Chu Hang's and Steve's. The increasingly intense smell of blood had completely ignited the beastly instincts buried in his bones.
In the blink of an eye, they were less than ten meters from the door!
Steve let out a furious roar, his voice crashing through the enclosed passage like a thunderclap and stirring up rolling echoes!
Without any flashy movement, he suddenly drove his legs forward, lowered his body slightly, and poured every ounce of his strength into his right shoulder!
Then he slammed into the door!
"BANG—!!!"
A terrifying explosion of sound erupted!
A visible ring-shaped shockwave burst outward from the point of impact, sweeping every speck of dust and debris from the passage!
The center of that specially reinforced door caved inward as though it had been struck by a hydraulic press!
The next second, countless black cracks spread wildly outward from the impact point like living vines!
The entire locking mechanism, along with the concrete structure embedded deep in the surrounding walls, disintegrated in an eruption of shattered stone and sparks!
The heavy iron door spun through the air like scrap metal kicked away by a giant, flying backward into the space beyond and crashing down with a dull boom.
The door was open.
But the sight beyond it froze the three figures, who had been charging in with unstoppable momentum, in their tracks.
Chu Hang's scalp went numb.
A chill shot up from the soles of his feet, raced along his spine, and stabbed straight into the top of his skull!
What the fuck... did we just break into the Xenomorph nest?!
What lay before them was not a prison cell.
It was a living black ocean made of pure despair and steel! The Mechanical Spiders they had encountered outside were everywhere here, so numerous it was a disaster!
The floor, the walls, the ceiling... they covered everything in sight like a dense, writhing, nauseating black carpet!
"Rustle, rustle, rustle..."
"Crunch... crunch..."
The sounds of countless metal limbs scraping across the ground and chewing through steel mixed with a nauseating stench of ozone and blood, rushing at them so fiercely it was almost suffocating!
The instant the door was smashed open, that black ocean seemed to pause for a second.
Then countless scarlet compound eyes turned toward them in unison, locking firmly onto the three people at the doorway.
"Help!"
"Get away! Don't come over here!"
The wails of survivors drifted out from the depths of hell.
Inside row after row of iron cells, the captured soldiers used the last of their strength to pound against the bars. Their faces were twisted by fear and despair. Their uniforms were shredded, their bodies covered in injuries to varying degrees, and their hollow eyes made them look like lambs awaiting slaughter.
Right before Chu Hang and the others, a spider had already bitten through the iron bars of a cell with its scalpel-sharp mouthparts. Its glowing red compound eyes locked onto a young soldier curled up in the corner, shaking uncontrollably with fear.
It pounced!
The young soldier managed only half a scream.
Then it stopped abruptly.
A splash of glaring crimson sprayed across the cold iron bars.
Then more spiders caught the scent of blood. Like vultures smelling carrion, they swarmed over... The soldier's body was quickly swallowed by the black tide, leaving behind only a few muffled sounds of bones breaking.
Steve's eyes turned red in an instant.
Not figuratively. They were truly blood-red, the capillaries in his eyes rupturing across a wide area from the sheer intensity of his fury.
"NO!!!"
He was the first to plunge headlong into that black spider tide of death!
"Awooo—!"
Logan was only half a beat slower. He moved after Steve yet arrived first, turning into a black whirlwind of death. Every swing of his Bone Claws sent metal limbs flying through the air alongside blue-violet electrical sparks!
It was over.
Chu Hang's heart skipped a beat.
Watching those two blockheads charge headfirst into the monster horde, the towering rage in his heart felt as though it had been doused with a bucket of ice water.
He was not Steve. He did not have that I Am Legend conviction, the willingness to burn himself away for his beliefs.
Nor was he Logan. He did not have the carefree detachment of someone who had lived for over a century and no longer feared death, fighting simply because it felt good.
At his core, he was still just a transmigrator who wanted to live a stable life.
And besides, he was not even American. If he did not need to survive in Marvel, who the hell would willingly risk his life for the United States?
Damn it!
Chu Hang cursed inwardly.
This was not a fight. This was a tower defense game on hell difficulty! The two main DPS and the tank had both turned into AI set to auto-attack, while he was the only player still thinking clearly!
If they kept fighting like this, they were just throwing themselves away!
Someone had to be the damn commander!
"Captain! Block the door! Don't let the ones outside get in!" Chu Hang roared with all his strength, his voice hoarse as though sandpaper had scraped it raw, yet it exploded like thunder. "Logan! Clear the left side! Leave the right side to me!"
That roar finally pulled Steve back from his fury with a sliver of reason.
He spun around sharply and slammed the Vibranium Shield into the ground with a boom, wedging it firmly against the door he had smashed open and forcibly holding back the second wave of spiders trying to flood in from outside like a tide!
Logan did not answer, but he roared and immediately turned toward the cells on the left, beginning an even more efficient slaughter!
The tactic worked!
Chu Hang drew a deep breath. What entered his lungs felt less like air and more like scorching fire. His gaze locked firmly onto the right side!
One cell there had its iron door covered in spiders. Inside, a young soldier was clutching his head, frozen with terror.
There was no time!
Chu Hang left an afterimage where he stood. The next moment, he appeared ghostlike at the entrance to that cell!
He could not be bothered with the spiders. Both hands shot out like lightning and seized the bars of the cell door, which had been gnawed full of holes!
His feet braced against the wall beside the doorway. Every muscle in his body bulged like coiling dragons, and his combat suit creaked under the unbearable strain!
"OPEN—FOR—ME!!!"
