Ch. 161Legion of the Damned, the Frustrated Greater Daemon of Nurgle
Chapter Summary
Key Plot Points and Events
- Captain Ramos and a Nurgle warship become trapped within the First Defensive Line’s Emperor’s Domain, whose suppressive power has grown enormously after decades of Huron’s feeding and the unlocking of Galaxy Guardian’s Ascension.
- The domain steadily erodes the warship and weakens Grandfather Nurgle’s blessings. Ramos’s captain eventually loses his sanity and is executed by Ramos.
- The Emperor converts the ship’s green flames into golden flames, allowing thirteen Legion of the Damned warriors to teleport directly into the command room.
- The Legion annihilates the bridge crew with enhanced Melta weapons. Their attacks prevent Nurgle’s regenerative blessings from healing victims and cause their souls to suffer before death.
- The Legion kills the remaining Nurgle officers, destroys the defensive line, and exterminates the entire warband aboard the flagship. The ship itself is transformed into a Legion of the Damned vessel.
- The Legion rapidly conquers and converts the rest of Nurgle’s fleet, while the Garden of Nurgle is unable to intervene effectively because the other Chaos Gods—and the unstable Black Sun—interfere with it.
- A massive Space Hulk transformed into a Nurgle Greater Daemon proves too resilient to destroy quickly in the Warp. Emperor-chan therefore opens a rift and forces it into Realspace, where the Reality Veil drastically suppresses its power.
- The Alliance detects the invasion and dispatches a large fleet, three Astartes battalions, Holy Dust, and Psykers to confront it outside the Iron Ring.
- Upon arrival, the Greater Daemon is reduced from a colossal Space Hulk-sized entity to a pustule only several thousand meters across.
- The Alliance fleet surrounds it and begins an enormous Emperor’s Ritual, using golden flames to seal off its escape and gradually compress and weaken it. The chapter ends with the daemon panicking and realizing it cannot break the ritual.
Character Developments
- Captain Ramos shifts from reluctant participant to a terrified, broken commander. The erosion of Nurgle’s protection drives his captain insane, and Ramos ultimately kills him before being destroyed himself.
- The Emperor/Emperor-chan demonstrates increasing independence and ingenuity, using techniques learned through decades of system-guided control. She can now manipulate enemy Warp phenomena and use them for Legion teleportation.
- The Legion of the Damned are shown to be far more powerful than ordinary posthumous warriors. Their equipment has been repeatedly strengthened by Emperor’s Epiphany, Emperor’s Domain, and Galaxy Guardian.
- The Nurgle Greater Daemon changes from a seemingly overwhelming Warp entity into a frightened and vulnerable opponent once forced into Realspace. Its confidence collapses when confronted by the Alliance’s fleet and ritual technology.
- The Alliance’s commanders, especially Meissner and Ramos’s counterpart in the command structure, display disciplined preparation and rapid response, treating the daemon as a serious but manageable military threat.
Significant Themes
- The reversal of Chaos’s blessings: Nurgle’s regenerative powers become a source of prolonged agony when golden Melta wounds prevent healing.
- The triumph of preparation and technology over supernatural power: The Alliance combines Psyker rituals, Holy Dust, advanced fleets, and the Reality Veil to neutralize a creature that would be nearly unstoppable elsewhere.
- Assimilation and transformation: Defeated Chaos ships and souls are incorporated into the Legion of the Damned, either becoming redeemed warriors or being consumed to strengthen Emperor’s Domain.
- The limits of Chaos: Even a Greater Daemon cannot rely on Nurgle’s support because the Chaos Gods are divided and constantly obstruct one another.
- Strategic adaptation: Rather than wasting forces slowly destroying the daemon in the Warp, Emperor-chan changes tactics and moves the battle to Realspace, where the Alliance has the advantage.
Character Interactions
- Ramos’s relationship with his captain collapses under the pressure of Emperor’s Domain; Ramos kills him when he becomes irreparably insane.
- The Nurgle Space Marine who enters the command room attempts to negotiate with the Legion of the Damned, but they respond by executing him immediately.
- The Greater Daemon repeatedly tries to corrupt or restore the Legion of the Damned to Chaos, but its efforts fail.
- Emperor-chan effectively manipulates the Greater Daemon into entering Realspace, exploiting its desperation to escape the Warp.
- The Alliance command staff coordinate closely: Meissner orders the fleet’s deployment, while the other commander emphasizes caution, Holy Dust, and the danger of enemy deception.
- The chapter contrasts the Greater Daemon’s isolated arrogance with the Alliance’s coordinated fleet, Psyker, and Astartes response.
