Characteristics
| Aspect | Documented details |
|---|---|
| Cultivation age | A spirit beast's age is a major indicator of its threat. Encountered specimens range from under one hundred years to a three-thousand-year Man-Faced Demon Spider. 30 14 |
| Spirit Rings | A slain spirit beast may form a Spirit Ring. The Spirit Master seeking the ring must personally deliver the final blow for it to belong to them. 4 |
| Ring compatibility | A Spirit Ring's resulting Soul Skill depends on both the beast's innate qualities and its compatibility with the Spirit Master's Martial Soul; its exact effect cannot be predetermined. 33 |
| Combat behavior | Unlike sparring partners, spirit beasts do not stop or surrender during a fight; survival depends on decisive action and reading their behavior correctly. They may nevertheless flee when injured or threatened rather than continue fighting. 30 34 46 |
| Threat response | Different species and cultivation levels may flee together rather than fight when driven by a stronger predator, disrupting their usual territorial and predatory behavior. 13 45 |
| Wounded specimens | Serious injuries do not make a spirit beast harmless. The wounded Quake-Armor Beast retained roughly sixty percent of its fighting strength, while the wounded Rift-Toothed Tiger remained fast enough to threaten multiple students. 34 46 |
| Cultivation resources | Spirit beasts provide materials as well as Spirit Rings. The Wind-Rending Leopard's remains were collected after Lu Yuan absorbed its ring, and the Royal Treasury held a preserved item from a fire-element spirit beast several thousand years old. 4 50 |
| Recorded knowledge | Spirit Hall maintains illustrated guides, hunting records, and species archives. Lu Yuan's upgraded access in Tiangou permits him to consult documented records of common spirit beasts below three thousand years. 30 33 53 |
| Managed populations | Spirit beasts are kept and transferred within the Royal Hunting Grounds using official approval documents and dedicated transfer gates. The assessment's outer zone was supposed to exclude beasts exceeding five hundred years. 45 48 |
Power Progression
The following table records observed cultivation-age tiers and their demonstrated significance, rather than the advancement of a single specimen.
| Cultivation Age / Tier | Documented Examples | Demonstrated Power or Significance | Chapters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Several decades to under 100 years | Long-Eared Fox; young Iron-Backed Jackal; Wind-Tailed Rat | Even a young attacking beast can threaten an inexperienced fighter. The slain Iron-Backed Jackal formed a pale White Spirit Ring. | 13 30 |
| Roughly 100–300 years | Tusked Boar; Crimson-Tailed Wolf; Blue-Patterned Python; Thornback Boar | Common targets for practical wilderness training and the Royal Hunting Grounds assessment. By spring, Lu Yuan could readily defeat two-hundred-year beasts and contend with specimens approaching three hundred years. | 3 13 32 44 |
| Over 300 to around 400 years | Wind-Rending Leopard; Iron-Backed Jackal Leader; Stone-Armored Rhino | Capable of dangerous ambushes or coordinated attacks. The Wind-Rending Leopard supplied Lu Yuan's first Yellow Spirit Ring. | 3 4 31 45 |
| 680–720 years | Shadow-Clawed Cat; Iron-Spined Savage Bull; Quake-Armor Beast | A substantially more dangerous tier than Lu Yuan's previous training targets. Qian Daoliu would not permit the level-twenty Lu Yuan to fight a full-strength beast over seven hundred years alone; the wounded 720-year Quake-Armor Beast supplied his second Yellow Spirit Ring. | 33 34 35 |
| 800–900 years | Rift-Toothed Tiger | Far exceeded the intended assessment targets in strength and speed, even while badly wounded. Defeated through Lu Yuan, Qin Yue, and Lin Che's coordinated attacks. | 46 47 |
| Nearly 1,000 to at least 1,300 years | Dark-Patterned Shadow Leopards; Red-Armored Rhinoceros | Their appearance invalidated Qingshi Valley's reported four-hundred-year threat ceiling, but they were themselves prey of a stronger predator. | 13 14 |
| 3,000 years | Man-Faced Demon Spider | A fast, venomous predator capable of killing powerful spirit beasts and endangering a patrol led by Spirit Elders. | 14 16 |
Appearance
Spirit beasts have no single form. Recorded specimens include scaled rhinoceroses, armored quadrupeds, jackals, leopards, spiders, snakes, deer, boars, wolves, and tigers. 3 13 30 34 44 46
- Wind-Rending Leopard — a swift leopard suited to burst movement and speed-based combat. 3 4
- Red-Armored Rhinoceros — a massive, dark-red-scaled beast with curved horns. 13
- Quake-Armor Beast — a stout creature protected by layered dark-brown armor plates. 34
- Rift-Toothed Tiger — a massive dark-yellow tiger with protruding fangs and dark bone-like markings across its shoulders and back. 46
- Man-Faced Demon Spider — a three-thousand-year predator that attacks with black spikes and venomous spider silk. 14 16
- Dark-Patterned Shadow Leopard — a nearly three-meter-long, pitch-black leopard with slender limbs and dark-red stripes along both sides of its spine. 14
- Iron-Backed Jackal — a gray-black beast with thick limbs, outward-curving tusks, and short black spikes along its back. The young specimen's incompletely darkened spikes helped Lu Yuan estimate its age. 30
- Shadow-Clawed Cat — depicted in the Worship Hall's records as a slender black beast with blade-like front claws. 33
Abilities & Traits
Spirit Ring Formation
Defeated spirit beasts can yield Spirit Rings that grant Soul Skills when absorbed by compatible Spirit Masters.
- The roughly three-hundred-year Wind-Rending Leopard produced Lu Yuan's first Yellow Spirit Ring and the speed-based Piercing Edge. 4
- The 720-year Quake-Armor Beast produced Lu Yuan's second Yellow Spirit Ring and the vibration-based Shock Edge. 35
- Higher-age rings impose greater absorption pressure; the Quake-Armor Beast's ring repeatedly transmitted rebounding force through Lu Yuan's spear and body. 35
- The under-one-hundred-year Iron-Backed Jackal formed a pale White Spirit Ring after its death, but the training party did not stop to absorb it. 30
- A resulting Soul Skill is not necessarily a complete reproduction of the beast's innate ability. Qian Daoliu describes ring selection as choosing a compatible direction, not guaranteeing a predetermined effect. 33
- Killing a beast does not eliminate the risks of absorbing its ring. Shao Ping requires Lu Yuan to treat his injuries and recover his Soul Power before absorbing the Quake-Armor Beast's ring; outside assistance cannot replace the absorber's own endurance during the process. 34 35
Species-Specific Combat Traits
Observed spirit beasts possess abilities tied to their species, bodies, and cultivation.
- Wind-Rending Leopard — high speed and explosive movement. 3
- Quake-Armor Beast — layered armor disperses force and rebounds part of an incoming impact. 33 34
- Iron-Backed Jackal — attacks relentlessly and can continue charging after suffering major wounds. 30
- Man-Faced Demon Spider — kills with precise black spikes, moves too quickly for ordinary pursuit, and leaves nearly invisible venom-carrying silk in wounds. 14 16
- Rift-Toothed Tiger — combines extreme speed and power with lethal claws, even while severely wounded. 46
- Iron-Backed Jackal pack — uses coordinated attacks, circling, and concealed ambushes. The pack loses its coordination and flees after Shao Ping kills its leader. 31
- Shadow-Clawed Cat — specializes in speed and explosive bursts, making it a prospective source of a speed- or ambush-oriented Soul Skill. 33
- Iron-Spined Savage Bull — combines strength and defense and is considered a possible source of a strength-enhancing Soul Skill. 33
- Gray-Armored Beast — possesses armor that resists Lu Yuan's direct thrusts, prompting him to attack a front-leg joint instead. 32
Environmental Awareness
Spirit beast tracks, wounds, behavior, and absence can reveal dangers before the source is visible.
- Fleeing tracks from normally incompatible species indicated that Qingshi Valley's ecosystem was being driven south by an unknown threat. 13
- The Red-Armored Rhinoceros's single piercing wound and nearby three-hole marks helped rule out the Dark-Patterned Shadow Leopards as its killer. 13 14
- Lu Yuan identified the Quake-Armor Beast's injured hind leg as its key weakness, using its poor turning ability to control the battle. 34
- The Rift-Toothed Tiger's injured right forelimb and repeated attempts to flee south revealed that it was escaping rather than hunting. 46
- Small footprints and cracked hard-shelled fruits allowed Lu Yuan to identify a Wind-Tailed Rat without provoking it. 30
- Abnormally large jackal prints and fresh fur warned the North Hunting Forest party that a powerful pack member had not yet appeared. 31
- The Azure-Horned Deer's torn corpse, nearby claw marks, and partial footprint indicated a killer stronger than an ordinary three-hundred-year beast. 44 45
- The absence of normal animal activity and fresh tracks leading away from a pool caused Lu Yuan's team to reject it as a campsite before another team encountered danger there. 45
- Inspection of the Rift-Toothed Tiger's abdominal wound showed that it had been injured by a sharp weapon or attack-type Soul Skill rather than another spirit beast. 46
Instinct, Cunning, and Retreat
Spirit beasts can ambush opponents and exploit openings, but their behavior differs from the deliberate preparations of human fugitives. During the quarry operation, Lu Yuan recognizes that human enemies can set warning traps, plan escape routes, and use concealed weapons in ways that make capturing them more troublesome than fighting beasts. 31 38
Beasts do not invariably fight until death. The Quake-Armor Beast tries to escape after sustained injury, the jackal pack scatters when its leader dies, and frightened assessment beasts abandon their pursuit once an escape route opens. These responses make distinguishing an attack from panic-driven movement an important survival skill. 31 34 45 46
Continued Development of Beast-Derived Skills
A beast-derived Soul Skill can remain intact while the recipient's Martial Soul evolves. After Lu Yuan's Piercing Spear becomes the Mountain-Shaking Spear, Shock Edge is still his second Soul Skill, but the evolved weapon transmits its vibration more deeply into targets and briefly retains residual force. Two rapid activations can overlap that force, allowing Lu Yuan to loosen a Three-Ring Soul Elder's reinforced grip. The improvement is attributed to the Martial Soul's vibration handling rather than a newly acquired Spirit Ring or Soul Skill. 51 52 56
Known Encounters
| Spirit Beast | Cultivation Age | Outcome | Chapters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue-Patterned Python | Roughly 200 years | Wounded while fleeing a stronger predator; killed by Lin Yue's group. | 3 |
| Wind-Rending Leopard | Over 300 years | Captured after ambushing Lin Yue's team; Lu Yuan killed it and absorbed its Spirit Ring. | 3 4 |
| Tusked Boar | Around 100 years | Fled south through Qingshi Valley's outskirts without attacking the patrol. | 13 |
| Long-Eared Fox | Several decades | Fled south during the abnormal evacuation of Qingshi Valley's beasts. | 13 |
| Red-Backed Wolf | Over 200 years | Fled south despite an injured left hind leg. | 13 |
| Red-Armored Rhinoceros | At least 1,300 years | Found dead in Qingshi Valley with a single wound through its chest; it had been fleeing south. | 13 |
| Dark-Patterned Shadow Leopards | Nearly 1,000 years | Two injured leopards attempted to flee south; one was killed by the Man-Faced Demon Spider. | 14 |
| Man-Faced Demon Spider | 3,000 years | Identified as the predator behind the rhinoceros and leopard deaths; its silk poisoned Qian Renxue before the group killed it. | 14 16 |
| Iron-Backed Jackal | Under 100 years | Lu Yuan's first unsupervised life-or-death spirit-beast fight; killed after repeatedly charging despite injury. | 30 |
| Wind-Tailed Rat | Young; exact age unspecified | Identified from tracks and feeding traces; left undisturbed. | 30 |
| Iron-Backed Jackal Leader | Over 300 years | Ambushed Shao Ping; Lu Yuan crippled its foreleg with Piercing Edge, allowing Shao Ping to kill it. | 31 |
| Crimson-Tailed Wolf | Over 100 years | Defeated by Lu Yuan in seventeen breaths after he exposed its neck weakness and used Piercing Edge to finish the fight. | 32 |
| Gray-Armored Beast | Unspecified | Lu Yuan targeted its front-leg joint after finding its armor resistant to direct penetration. | 32 |
| Shadow-Clawed Cat | 680 years | Considered for Lu Yuan's second Spirit Ring; rejected because its likely benefits overlapped with Piercing Edge. | 33 |
| Iron-Spined Savage Bull | 700 years | Considered for Lu Yuan's second Spirit Ring; rejected because added frontal strength did not adequately address his close-range restraint weakness. | 33 |
| Quake-Armor Beast | 720 years | Retained roughly sixty percent of its strength despite prior injuries; killed alone by Lu Yuan. | 33 34 |
| Thornback Boar | Roughly 260 years | Driven away by Lu Yuan, Qin Yue, and Lin Che after Lu Yuan exploited an old hind-leg injury; the team claimed two tokens. | 44 |
| Azure-Horned Deer | At least 300 years | Found freshly killed, with severe neck and abdominal wounds; its death warned Group Seven of an unusually powerful nearby beast. | 44 45 |
| Stone-Armored Rhino | Nearly 400 years | Allowed to escape through an open route rather than fought, leaving three assessment tokens for Group Seven. | 45 |
| Black-Maned Beast | Within a group of roughly 200–300-year beasts | Knocked aside by Qin Yue during the rescue of a trapped student team near the pool. | 45 |
| Rift-Toothed Tiger | 800–900 years | Entered the Royal Hunting Grounds while badly wounded; killed through Lu Yuan, Qin Yue, and Lin Che's coordination. Later confirmed to have been deliberately released by Han Song. | 46 47 49 50 |
| Azure-Striped Deer | Unspecified | Three had been transferred for a Royal Academy exercise more than three months earlier; their old approval document was subsequently altered to authorize the tiger's entry. | 48 |
Story Role / Major Arcs
Black Stone Forest
Spirit beasts first drive Lu Yuan's entry into practical Spirit Master combat. The fleeing Blue-Patterned Python warns Lin Yue's party of a stronger predator, while the Wind-Rending Leopard becomes Lu Yuan's first Spirit Ring after he helps expose its ambush. 3 4
Qingshi Valley Incident
A mass exodus of spirit beasts reveals that the patrol report's estimate of four-hundred-year threats is disastrously inaccurate. The corpse of a 1,300-year Red-Armored Rhinoceros, fleeing Dark-Patterned Shadow Leopards, and the three-thousand-year Man-Faced Demon Spider establish a predator far beyond the team's expectations. 13 14
The spider's venom also creates a danger that persists after the battle. Lu Yuan notices silk embedded in Qian Renxue's wound and warns her against circulating Soul Power, which accelerates the poison's spread. Removing the silk and stopping circulation avert her foretold severe injury. 16
North Hunting Forest Training
Shao Ping uses real encounters to teach Lu Yuan that spirit beasts fight without arena rules. Lu Yuan learns tracking, restraint, and weak-point targeting through battles with Iron-Backed Jackals and later develops into a fighter capable of handling beasts approaching three hundred years of cultivation. 30 32
The jackal pack ambush allows Lu Yuan to prevent Shao Ping's predicted serious injury by diverting the leader's charge. Its unexpectedly powerful leader prompts Shao Ping to suspect a disturbance deeper in the forest, close the area to newcomers, and report it to the Patrol Team. As Lu Yuan becomes more capable, his supervisors increase their observation distance and intervene less often against beasts within the predetermined cultivation limit. 31 32
Second Spirit Ring Hunt
The 720-year Quake-Armor Beast is selected specifically to address Lu Yuan's weakness when opponents seize his spear. Lu Yuan kills it by exploiting its damaged hind leg, then gains Shock Edge from its Spirit Ring. 33 34 35
The hunt contrasts compatible selection with simply pursuing age or strength. Qian Daoliu screens three candidates and monitors the chosen beast's injuries, with accompanying guards instructed to save Lu Yuan if necessary rather than defeat the target for him. 33
Royal Hunting Grounds Crisis
Abnormal beast movement and a slain Azure-Horned Deer foreshadow a security breach in the outer zone. The wounded Rift-Toothed Tiger's appearance terminates the assessment and later leads investigators to the Western Spirit Beast Transfer Gate. 44 45 46 47
Investigation establishes that someone reused an authentic but outdated transfer approval document originally issued for three Azure-Striped Deer. Its date and contents were altered, and transfer manager Han Song personally brought the transport cart through the gate around midnight. After his capture, Han Song admits that he delivered the already-wounded, caged tiger near the isolation zone and opened its cage under another person's instructions. 48 49
Han Song was also ordered to observe everyone appearing beside Xue Qinghe after the disturbance. The beast incident therefore formed part of an unresolved scheme involving surveillance of the First Prince, rather than a confirmed accidental escape from the inner hunting area. Han Song cannot identify the true mastermind or the origin of the altered document. 49 50
Lu Yuan's contribution to killing the tiger and saving students earns him a Royal Treasury selection and increased Spirit Hall privileges. His later archive access includes records of common beasts below three thousand years, supporting future research into cultivation resources and compatible materials. 47 52 53
Later Spirit Beast Attack
A later spirit beast attack is referenced when Qian Renxue assesses Ning Rongrong's growth. She notes that Rongrong learned to protect herself and find a safe position rather than rely entirely on others; the cited account does not identify the attacking beast's species or cultivation age. 71
Trivia
- Spirit beasts can be valuable sources of cultivation resources, but Lin Yue and Qian Daoliu both warn against choosing a ring merely for age or immediate advancement. 2 33
- Lu Yuan's first Spirit Ring came from a beast weakened and restrained by others, while his second came from a 720-year Quake-Armor Beast he killed alone. 4 34
- The injured Rift-Toothed Tiger was transferred into the Royal Hunting Grounds using an altered approval document rather than escaping from the inner hunting area. Han Song's confession confirms that he deliberately released it after transporting it through the western gate. 47 48 49 50
- The Royal Hunting Grounds assessment was designed to test route planning, Soul Power conservation, knowledge of spirit beast activity, teamwork, and night-watch arrangements, not merely the ability to kill beasts. 43
- Spirit beast materials circulate beyond hunting expeditions: Lu Yuan sees people carrying them in Spirit City, and the Royal Treasury preserves materials from powerful specimens. 6 50
