The view shifted to the surface of the Fortress World Thunder Saint Alliance.

Ten Virus Bombs exploded downwind in the atmosphere, and the wind carried their contents across the entire world.

At first, nothing happened. The Tyranids' ground forces continued their frenzied attacks on the Cultists and the Imperium's loyalist lines.

Walls, trenches, bunkers, Automated Turrets, and Astra Militarum grunts armed with Lasguns covered the Fortress World.

They had established a solid defensive line and poured every kind of firepower into the Tyranids.

The Tyranid ground forces charged the Astra Militarum infantry lines in overwhelming numbers.

The Tyranids' basic infantry were Blade Bugs and Gun Bugs, insectoid creatures that looked like small Xenos.

A Blade Bug's two forelimbs were sharp short spears, capable of piercing an Astra Militarum grunt's Flak Armour with ease.

A Gun Bug held one or two bio-guns. The guns grew directly from its arms and drew nutrients from its body through blood vessels.

Those guns fired living ammunition: tiny bugs covered in armour.

When one struck a target, it secreted an enzyme that softened the surface. Then it opened its gaping jaws and burrowed inside to wreak havoc.

If dozens of Gun Bugs fired on a single Astra Militarum grunt, their living rounds could burrow into his flesh and eat him hollow from the inside out.

The Tyranids had plenty of powerful bio-weapons, from tank-like Hive Tyrants to Bio-Ships the size of flying cities.

But ask the grunts which ones gave them the most trouble, and the answer was Blade Bugs and Gun Bugs. They were the most basic Tyranid troops, with unremarkable killing power, but their numbers blotted out the sky.

The more basic something was, the more important it became. That held true for every species.
