The surface of the Savage World had descended into utter chaos!
The Hive City on the Savage World's surface was not large, with a population of only twenty million. Rather than a hive city, it was little more than a city of high-rise buildings.
Most of those twenty million people were members of the Imperial Cult's clergy, with a small minority serving in the PDF.
The Barbarians of the Savage World resisted all attempts to civilize them. Some particularly vicious and powerful Barbarian tribes ambushed and killed missionaries, then sent warriors to surround the Hive City, hoping to break in and plunder it.
As a result, towering walls encircled the Hive City, standing over fifty meters tall even at their lowest point.
At that moment, the planet's PDF were stationed on the walls, with a soldier every four or five meters. Armed with solid-shot autoguns, they fired down at the Barbarians charging the walls.
The PDF were poorly equipped. There were virtually no heavy weapons to be seen, only the small arms carried by the infantry.
Fortunately, small arms were still guns. Sheltered by the walls, the PDF fired relentlessly down below, killing most of the charging Barbarians!
These Barbarians were exceptionally tall and muscular, each standing over two meters tall.
They wore black or blue paint on their faces, their hair disheveled, with animal-hide cloaks draped over their shoulders and primitive spears and blades in their hands.
There was little method to their warfare. At a roar from their chieftain, they all charged forward, only to be mowed down in rows by autogun fire.
By now, Barbarian corpses carpeted the ground outside the walls. With their woefully inadequate weapons and equipment, they could not even get close.
One PDF soldier switched his autogun to semiautomatic and squeezed the trigger
