Ch. 21The Deal
Key plot points and events
- Hoshinomiya confronts Ibuki and signals that he knows about the hidden camera and walkie-talkie.
- He explains that he inferred the walkie-talkie’s location from dirt on Ibuki’s clothes and disturbed ground near a tree. Combining that clue with Class C’s public withdrawal, Ryuen’s refusal to give up, and Katsuragi’s arrangement with Ryuen, he concludes that Ryuen is still secretly on the island.
- Hoshinomiya asks Ibuki to arrange a meeting with Ryuen at the beach sunshade the next morning so he can propose a deal. Ibuki objects but leaves without agreeing aloud.
- Back at Class D’s camp, Hoshinomiya approaches Horikita with an offer to trade intelligence about Classes A, B, and C. He proposes sharing the information in stages so Class D can verify it.
- Horikita questions why a Class A student would betray his own class and warns that the information could be bait. Hoshinomiya claims his motive is personal and tied to divisions within Class A.
- Ayanokoji remains unconvinced and privately considers that Hoshinomiya may be manipulating Class D for his own advantage. He notices Ibuki nearby, visibly angry.
Character developments and interactions
- Hoshinomiya shows himself to be observant and strategically minded. He uses what he knows about Ibuki’s covert activities to seek access to Ryuen, then offers Horikita a carefully limited information deal.
- Ibuki shifts from defiance to alarm when Hoshinomiya reveals how much he has deduced. Though she resists being used as a messenger, she does not expose their secret.
- Horikita responds cautiously to Hoshinomiya’s offer, demanding a clear explanation and questioning its credibility rather than accepting it at face value.
- Ayanokoji watches the exchange without intervening. His suspicion of Hoshinomiya deepens, and he keeps his true assessment to himself.
Significant themes
- Information as leverage: Hidden equipment, alliances, and intelligence give characters bargaining power.
- Trust and deception: Hoshinomiya’s staged offer may build trust—or conceal a larger manipulation.
- Rivalries within alliances: Hoshinomiya suggests that Class A is divided, complicating the usual class-versus-class conflict.
- Observation and inference: Small physical clues allow Hoshinomiya to uncover a secret plan, while Ayanokoji looks beyond the apparent deal to its possible motives.
