Bai Jin declined the invitation to go out and celebrate with the others. Alone, he slung his backpack over his shoulder and walked out through the school gates.
Lu Chengze's bodyguards were still following behind him, dutiful as ever.
Bai Jin had something to do tonight and did not want to waste effort outsmarting the bodyguards assigned to protect him. So he took out his phone, intending to tell Lu Chengze to withdraw them.
But Lu Chengze called first.
Bai Jin answered. "Fifth Master."
Lu Chengze's voice was as steady and pleasant as ever. Getting straight to the point, he asked, "Kid, I heard someone bullied you today?"
Bai Jin was not surprised in the slightest. Huo Hongbao had called him earlier, and with Huo Hongbao's love of stirring up trouble, he would definitely have told Lu Chengze at once.
"Mm, but I didn't suffer any losses." In an exceptionally smug tone, Bai Jin took the initiative to tell Lu Chengze everything that had happened.
Lu Chengze had already learned the entire story from Huo Hongbao, but he still listened patiently. Once Bai Jin finished, his voice brimmed with indulgence as he praised him, "Well done."
As they spoke, Bai Jin had reached the entrance of the Eight-Star Residential Community. Looking at the several bodyguards following far behind him, he said, "Fifth Master, there's something I'd like to discuss with you."
"Sure, go ahead." Lu Chengze thought Bai Jin wanted to discuss what came next regarding Zhu Chaohong.
Instead, Bai Jin hesitantly said, "Fifth Master, my daily life is pretty simple. There's really no need to send bodyguards to secretly protect me every day. Can you withdraw them all?"
Lu Chengze narrowed his eyes. "You noticed them?"
Those useless fools had actually let an ordinary kid like Bai Jin easily detect their movements. It seemed he really should pull them back and throw them into the Bodyguard Camp for some intensive retraining.
The several bodyguards trailing Bai Jin all felt a chill run down their backs at the same time, as though someone unseen had fixed their eyes on them.
They warily looked around. "What's going on? Why do I suddenly have a bad feeling?"
"I feel it too."
But they soon learned exactly what that bad feeling meant.
"Fine, I'll notify them to leave in a moment." Without the slightest change in his tone, Lu Chengze smiled and agreed. "But Xu City hasn't been peaceful lately. You have to promise me you won't go out at night unless you have to."
Bai Jin was especially obedient. "Okay."
Who would go out in the middle of the night for no reason?
Unless they had something to do.
Lu Chengze coaxed Bai Jin a little longer, only for Bai Jin to pry information from him in return and confirm that he would not be coming home tonight. Only then did Bai Jin hang up.
The moment the call ended, the tenderness on Lu Chengze's face vanished. "Notify Lu Tu and have him come back when he has time. The Bodyguard Camp can't remain leaderless forever."
Lu Jin observed three seconds of silence for those incompetent bodyguards. "Yes."
In the living room, Bai Jin had a slice of toast dangling from his mouth as he sat cross-legged on the sofa with a laptop on his lap. His fingers flew over the keyboard, and eleven flickering red dots soon appeared on the screen.
Those were the current hiding places of the eleven assassins, yet they were all remarkably far away from him.
Bai Jin blanked out for a second. At their rate of searching, when would they ever find his residence?
He studied the map more closely and discovered that the closest assassin was hiding on a private hill out in the suburbs.
"Tch! What a bunch of idiots." Bai Jin seriously doubted whether assassins of such professional caliber could truly complete their mission successfully.
Should he lend them a hand?
Bai Jin stared thoughtfully at the nearest moving red dot.
Bai Jin did not like sitting around and waiting to die. Since these people's ultimate target was him, he might as well do them a good deed for once.
An hour later, Bai Jin appeared halfway up the private hill in the suburbs.
He was less than two hundred meters from the assassin's hiding place.
But Bai Jin did not charge straight in. Instead, he strolled slowly along a narrow, thorn-covered path.
To lure the snake from its hole, he had deliberately changed into a white tracksuit with a white cap. Anyone who had spent years in the international scene would immediately recognize that his outfit closely resembled that of the notorious deranged killer on the International Hitman List—the chief instructor of the Third War Zone at War Wolf Base, White Scarf.
Though the assassin hiding on the hill was not among the top ten on the International Hitman List, he had seen plenty. The moment he noticed someone trespassing on his territory who appeared to be the deranged killer White Scarf, he had to follow and get a clear look.
Before long, a furtive figure appeared behind Bai Jin.
What that assassin did not notice was that while he furtively followed the white figure ahead, several agile tails had also latched onto him from behind.
It was not that Bai Jin had failed to notice the people following the assassin, but the assassin was his only target.
As long as those people did not interfere, he could ignore them.
After walking a little farther, just as the road ahead of Bai Jin ended at a cliff, the assassin following him finally spoke. "Stop. Who are you? What do you mean by deliberately luring me here?"
If he had not been uncertain whether the person before him was the deranged killer White Scarf, he would have struck long ago.
"You've been looking for me for so long, yet you don't even know who I am?"
The assassin froze at first, then turned to run as if he had seen a ghost.
But how could Bai Jin possibly let him escape so easily?
At some point, a short blade had appeared in his hand. Its tip gleamed with a chilling light beneath the moon. Just before the assassin could run beyond the blade's throwing range, Bai Jin hurled it.
With a wet pfft, the short blade sank swiftly into the assassin's back near his heart. His body stiffened, and he turned his head in disbelief. "You... you're White Scarf?"
It was confirmed. This man was the deranged killer White Scarf.
With both hands in his pockets, Bai Jin strolled over to the assassin. Under the man's terrified, helpless gaze, he reached out and pulled the short blade from his back. "Didn't you come to kill me? I delivered myself right to your door, so why aren't you making a move?"
The assassin shook like a leaf. "I was wrong. Don't kill me. I was wrong..."
Fuck! If he had known that the target of this job was the freak White Scarf, he would rather have starved to death or been laughed to death by his peers than accepted it.
Bai Jin smiled unhurriedly. "Don't shake! Such a good opportunity—are you sure you won't kill me?"
As he spoke, the short blade in Bai Jin's hand had already pressed against the assassin's throat. Beneath its edge, the man's carotid artery pulsed steadily.
The assassin's legs had gone weak with fear, but he did not dare move. He did not even dare speak loudly. "White Scarf, I was only doing this for money. I was wrong. If you let me go, I'll leave A Country immediately."
Seeing that Bai Jin remained unmoved, the assassin forced down his fear and tried to negotiate. "And if you can spare me, I can tell you who hired me."
Bai Jin's eyes smiled. "Do you think that if I could find your location so easily, I wouldn't know who your employer was?"
The assassin fell into complete despair, because he heard the killing intent concealed in White Scarf's words.
White Scarf had said "you people," not "you." That meant he already knew who the others trying to kill him were.
The assassin no longer held even the slightest hope of survival and could only beg. "Please, White Scarf, I haven't made a move against you yet. Can you not kill me...?"
"No." As Bai Jin spoke, the short blade pressed against the assassin's throat sliced through his carotid artery at an eerie speed.
As blood gushed out, Bai Jin had already swiftly withdrawn his hand and turned away with effortless grace.
