Only when Lu Chengze saw Bai Jin did the tension in his heart finally ease. But when his gaze swept over Bai Jin's trembling body and the swollen red handprint clearly visible on his cheek, the temperature in the room plummeted.
He strode over to the man, pulled the trembling, sobbing child—who was still strangling the assassin's neck with a rope—into his arms, and carefully ran his large hands over him. Only after finding no other external injuries did he gently soothe him. "Don't be afraid. I'm here."
Bai Jin hugged Lu Chengze tightly around the waist, rubbing his face against the man's chest in search of security. In the end, he pressed his uninjured left cheek against the man's chest, listened to his steady heartbeat, and whimpered softly.
From Lu Chengze's angle, all he had to do was lower his head to see Bai Jin's swollen, reddened right cheek.
The fury Lu Chengze had only just suppressed instantly flared again. In a cold, hard voice, he asked the assassin crouched on the floor and coughing desperately, "You hit him?"
The man's coughing abruptly stopped. Huh?!
No, compared to the damage from his attack and the damage White Scarf had nearly inflicted by strangling him to death, who exactly had it worse?
And when they rushed into the room, hadn't they seen that White Scarf had almost strangled him to death?
Had Lu Chengze seen it?
Of course he had.
Not only had Lu Chengze seen it, Lu Jin and Lu Mu, who had rushed in behind him, had seen it too.
But with Bai Jin's arms shaking like he had Parkinson's, who could he possibly strangle to death?
It had merely been self-defense in the face of a threat to his life.
What had he done wrong??
Couldn't they see Bai Jin had nearly been scared to death?
Bai Jin had even cried.
Lu Jin slammed the man to the ground. "You dared hurt Young Master Bai? Looks like you're tired of living."
Lu Mu did not believe in any rule that men could not hit women. He stepped forward, kicked the woman who was trying to escape to the ground as well, and pinned her down beneath his foot. "You dared hit Young Master Bai too? You're courting death!"
Lu Jin and Lu Mu moved swiftly and cleanly, their fierce manner frightening Bai Jin into burrowing even deeper into Lu Chengze's arms. "Fifth Master, I'm scared..."
Lu Chengze scooped Bai Jin up in his arms and strode outside. "No matter which of them hit the child, break both their hands before sending them to the police."
Lu Jin and Lu Mu replied, "Yes."
Lu Chengze carried Bai Jin downstairs. His bodyguards were still stationed below, and the moment they saw them come down, one of them immediately opened the car door and shielded them as they got into the back seat.
Once Lu Chengze and Bai Jin were seated in the car, the bodyguards spread out around it, standing watch.
Before coming here, they had watched with their own eyes as a van was blown into the air. At the time, they had heard their Fifth Master's anxious roar over the radio.
Fortunately, after checking the vehicle, they found no one inside—and no trace of Young Master Bai.
Only then had Fifth Master calmed down.
Although they could now see that Fifth Master had found Young Master Bai, one of Bai Jin's shoes was missing, his clothes were dirty and disheveled, and his face was swollen. He had obviously been beaten. Tsk, tsk, tsk!
The precious darling they had all treasured had been beaten into this state. Their Fifth Master probably wanted to kill someone.
In the back seat.
"Ah! That hurts!" Bai Jin sat on Lu Chengze's lap as the man carefully checked him over. When Lu Chengze's hand touched his knee, he shrank back again.
Lu Chengze immediately rolled up Bai Jin's white pants, now gray with dirt, and saw that the pale skin on both knees had been scraped open, faint streaks of blood showing through. "Bear with it. I'll put medicine on it."
"Mm." Bai Jin clutched Lu Chengze's collar and nodded pitifully.
After applying medicine to Bai Jin's knees, Lu Chengze took out a tissue, held Bai Jin's bare foot—the one missing its shoe—and carefully wiped away the grime. Seeing how cautious he was, Bai Jin's tears of feigned misery paused.
Had I overacted?
Actually, I'm not that delicate!
Just as Bai Jin thought Lu Chengze would lift his little foot and kiss it to comfort him, Lu Chengze suddenly asked, "Baby, tell me what happened."
Whew!
Had he finally remembered the important matter?
Bai Jin nodded and obediently told him how he had encountered that man and woman, and how they had tied him up and taken him away.
At the end, he asked in confusion and innocence, "Fifth Master, once they learned my name was Bai Jin, they tied me up without another word. But I don't know them, and I don't have any grudge against them. Why did they kidnap me?"
Bai Jin could not figure it out, but Lu Chengze understood perfectly. These two assassins had mistaken Bai Jin for White Scarf.
Although the pronunciations were similar, the characters were different.
On top of that, Bai Jin had happened to be at the scene of the drug lord assassination. Naturally, they had mistaken him for White Scarf, that internationally notorious perverse assassin who killed without blinking.
But why had those two idiots not considered that if Bai Jin really were White Scarf, that deranged assassin from War Wolf Base, how could they have captured him so easily and beaten him into such a pitiful state?
"They mistook you for someone else." Lu Chengze did not tell Bai Jin much more. Talking about a deranged assassin like White Scarf would only frighten the child.
Bai Jin nodded with a blank look. "Oh~"
As if recalling something, he sat up straight, pretending not to notice that the movement had brushed against a sensitive spot. With a nervous expression, he grabbed Lu Chengze's arm and shook it. "Fifth Master, I overheard that man saying in the car that his accomplices were coming. Hurry and tell your people to hide!"
Lu Chengze took a deep breath and held Bai Jin's wriggling body firmly against him. "Mm. Don't worry. We already tracked them down. Their accomplices won't be coming."
"Really? Whew! That's good, that's good!" Upon hearing that, Bai Jin let out a heavy sigh of relief and curled back up in Lu Chengze's arms. "Fifth Master, you're amazing! You can figure everything out."
Hearing the child's praise, Lu Chengze enjoyed it immensely. "Of course. Don't you know who your boyfriend is?"
Ten minutes later, shrill police sirens approached from afar. The police had arrived.
Lu Jin and Lu Mu dragged the man and woman downstairs like dead dogs. After handing them over to the police, all their people finally withdrew.
After driving back to Bai Jin's residence, Lu Chengze still carried Bai Jin in his arms.
"Fifth Master, should we call Third Young Master Ming over?" Lu Jin bared his teeth slightly as he looked at the shocking swelling on Bai Jin's face.
Young Master Bai's skin was far too delicate.
Without some medicine, the swelling probably would not go down for several days.
"No need. Go handle your work." Lu Chengze carried Bai Jin to the sofa and set him down, then headed into the kitchen. He took three eggs from the refrigerator, found a small pot, poured in water, and began boiling them.
The heir who had never lifted a finger around the house looked fairly practiced, but it was still his first time boiling eggs, so he had even set a timer.
"I have a friend named Ming Junqing. He's a doctor, but he talks too much. If I call him over now, I'm afraid you'll find him noisy. I'll use eggs to reduce the swelling on your face first, then put you to sleep," Lu Chengze explained to Bai Jin. "Once you've calmed down, I'll bring someone over to examine you."
