Just a Mission

At first, Ke Chen had thought this was a perfectly ordinary world. As someone who had always been an Aquaman, he became even more uninhibited after coming to the United States.

But his standards were high, and ordinary women rarely caught his eye.

Ohio was a nice place, located in the central eastern United States and not far from New York, so the girls here were of fairly high quality.

Especially at the state university, Ke Chen used to enjoy strolling around there and soaking in the youthful atmosphere.

It was then that he saw newspapers about Stark Industries and information about Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, and immediately realized that he had not come to an ordinary world at all.

"Godfather, is today some special day?"

Natasha looked at the lavish spread of food as she asked Ke Chen. Yelena only knew how to eat, her mouth covered in grease.

Natasha was far more mature than Yelena, something Ke Chen had noticed long ago.

She was like a little adult, extraordinary from a young age.

Ke Chen stroked Natasha's light blue curls and said with a smile, "Every day is important to us. We should make life a little more special."

"My teacher always tells me to live meaningfully, but I just want to be happy."

Natasha said this to her godfather.

"You're right. No one gets to define what meaningful means."

Ke Chen smiled. "Eat up, or it will get cold soon."

It had to be said that today's meal really was lavish, so it was no wonder Natasha was puzzled. Even Melina was somewhat confused.

The table was packed with dishes. There was clearly no way the few of them could finish it all.

Spicy chicken, lemon duck, sliced boiled pork trotters...

Unlike the children, Melina had spent a year here but still could not get used to authentic Chinese food. She preferred American Chinese food, with its heavier flavors—either extremely spicy or sour.

And they all had names that no one in China had ever heard of.

Like General Tso's chicken...

But Ke Chen had been much more successful in shaping the tastes of the two little girls. They were still young and could quickly adapt to real delicacies.

Thus, after nearly a year of feeding them, Natasha and Yelena had already grown unaccustomed to other kinds of food.

Their favorite was braised chicken legs, because the flavor soaked all the way through. They would gnaw on them skin and all, and it was absolutely satisfying.

But they were still too young and tiny, so they became stuffed after eating only a little.

Yelena was trying to cram in more even with her belly bulging, but Melina hurriedly stopped her.

"It's not like you won't get to eat it again later."

Melina smiled at little Yelena.

Yelena's round little face was adorable, and a delicious meal made her forget her conflict with Natasha.

"She's greedy because she's a crybaby."

Natasha clicked her tongue and ran off, acting far more grown-up than her age.

Melina could do nothing about her. Natasha was such a tomboy.

After resting for a while, Melina looked at the sky and immediately took Yelena's hand as she said to Ke Chen, "It's getting late. We should head back."

"Goodbye, little princess."

Ke Chen patted Yelena's head, and Yelena directly kissed the back of his hand.

"See you tomorrow, Godfather."

Yelena happily followed Melina away.

As she closed the door, Melina even gave Ke Chen a flirtatious look.

Then, as she left the yard, she happened to see Alexei's car returning.

Although she had no feelings for Alexei and had not even done anything with him, since it was merely a mission, she still felt a little awkward.

After all, she was Alexei's wife in name, yet she brought her two daughters to play at their godfather's house every day...

When Alexei saw this, his face darkened somewhat.

He only wanted the mission to end quickly so he could leave this place and return home. Otherwise, it was simply too awkward.

"Can we talk for a moment?"

Alexei asked Melina.

Melina told Yelena to go inside by herself, then crossed her arms and asked, "What is it?"

"You need to understand that everything we do is for the mission. Taking Natasha and the others to Ke Chen's house like this will jeopardize the mission. We are the married couple."

Alexei said this, though it was unclear whether he truly feared the mission would be affected or had some other reason.

Melina laughed mockingly. "Don't forget, we're not married. This is only a mission too."

She would never acknowledge that she and Alexei were husband and wife. In her eyes, anything left behind by that kind of mission was worthless.

"I don't care. Unless you want to get him killed, do you think he'll be all right once we leave?"

Alexei immediately sneered.

Melina did not refute him. Instead, she fell silent.

If she could, she wanted to stay here forever with her two little girls. This life was quite nice, and she was satisfied with it.

But Melina also knew that this was completely beyond her control.

Especially since Ke Chen was an ordinary person. If this continued, she truly would get him killed.

"That is none of your business."

Melina still replied forcefully, then walked straight into the house to get the two children.

The look in his eyes behind her made her sneer inwardly. Alexei was simply jealous of Ke Chen.

After staying here for so long, he had not even touched Melina's hand, yet Ke Chen had easily won Melina's heart.

And he had even stolen away his two "daughters."

So who was really carrying out the mission?
