The more Lu Ao thought about it, the more frightened he became. With only a few steps left, he clutched his backpack and broke into a run. Before Song Zhou's car had even stopped, he yanked the door open and climbed in. "Quick, let's get back!"
Song Zhou looked over. "How is it inside the egg?"
"I'm not sure yet." Lu Ao set the backpack on his lap and carefully opened it to look inside. "There's a crack in the egg now, with fractures all around it, but I can't see an opening."
As he spoke, Lu Ao gently touched the egg.
At some point, the egg in the backpack had turned hard again, losing its warm, tough feel.
"What do we do now? Just sit beside it and wait?"
"Let's get back to the hotel first," Song Zhou said soothingly. "Try not to worry too much. The little one seems all right."
Only then did the flustered Lu Ao think to carefully sense what was happening inside the Dragon Egg.
The little one was indeed doing well. His life force was strong.
As Lu Ao sensed him, the whole egg rocked violently, as though Little Dragon were struggling inside.
Lu Ao carefully placed a fingertip against the shell, hoping to give Little Dragon a little encouragement.
Through the thick shell, Lu Ao felt a trace of warmth against his fingertip. It was as if Little Dragon had felt his touch, turned toward it, and rubbed against his finger.
Lu Ao's heart melted. He didn't know what to say; even his fingertip seemed to go soft.
He drew his hand back and rubbed his fingertips together, at a loss. "This little guy is so perceptive."
"I'll take a look when we get to the hotel," Song Zhou said.
