Background / History

Lin Gongshang was Lu Ao's elementary-school classmate. Lu Ao initially fails to recognize him because Gongshang had changed from a fair, chubby child into a dark, thin adult. 13

When Lu Ao returns to the area to fish alone, Gongshang invites him to join the local fishermen for safety. He is skeptical of Lu Ao's claim that he can dive for six hours and catch more than fifty jin of fish in a day, but quickly witnesses Lu Ao's exceptional catches firsthand. 14 16

He becomes part of Lu Ao's regular fishing circle, joining outings for squid, eels, crabs, shellfish, tide-pool catches, and sea bass. His initial envy of Lu Ao's strength and luck gradually develops into trust, familiarity, and friendship. 29 33 130 139

When two guests at his home develop a serious infection after being pricked by a Black Seabream, Gongshang follows Lu Ao's warning, helps arrange their emergency evacuation, and is deeply shaken by the incident. 38 40

Gongshang later begins a relationship with Luo Xiaohui, assists her family in razor-clam fields, and eventually marries her. He plans to build a house on his homestead for their future home. 158 166 265 326

Appearance

Lin Gongshang is dark and thin as an adult, a marked contrast to his fair, chubby childhood appearance. 13

Personality

Gongshang is outspoken, energetic, and fond of crude jokes. He frequently teases Lu Ao about his appetite, appearance, speed, and supposed luck, though he is easily embarrassed when Lu Ao responds with superior strength or deadpan remarks. 18 31 130

He is competitive and likes demonstrating his practical skills, particularly when Luo Xiaohui is present. His pride is apparent when he teaches others to dig Blood Eels or razor clams, but he readily praises Lu Ao when Lu Ao surpasses him. 158 166

Beneath his rough manner, Gongshang is loyal and community-minded. He is frightened for the safety of guests injured at his home, accepts Lu Ao and Lin Qiyan's sexual orientations after an initial adjustment, and agrees to discreetly help inform their friends. 40 141

Although tempted by the possible value of newly discovered underwater porcelain, he ultimately agrees that the artifacts should be reported to the authorities. 229 230
