According to rumors, the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor's Curse seemed to last for one school year.

So had the Curse taken effect when Kreigs was caught, or did it only count as taking effect now that he had been captured?

After careful thought, Manus felt it should have been the former.

If he had not exposed Fake Craigus back then, Potter would have been the one to deal with their gang in the end. And Potter obviously would not have killed Fake Craigus on the spot. He would most likely have been taken to the Ministry of Magic, bribed someone there, and escaped.

After that, Potter probably would not have received an Order of Merlin medal like Manus had, giving several people a reason to target him.

Potter might not even have had the idea or awareness to root out this gang ahead of time and eliminate future trouble.
