Why He Chose Four Electives

It was a golden hourglass pendant fitted with bearings that allowed it to rotate.

The ring around the hourglass looked somewhat like the circular tracks on an astrolabe that simulated the paths of celestial bodies. The Magical Aura and magical runes upon it left Manus staring in a daze.

"Humanity's earliest and most intuitive perception of time came from the movement of celestial bodies, from sunrise and sunset to the changing seasons, then to the patterns of stars moving through the sky..."

"Oh, right, Manus."

After handing the Time-Turner to Manus, Flitwick hesitated for a moment before finally making up his mind to speak.

"Why did you choose four elective courses? I mean, why were you the only one who didn't choose Muggle Studies...?"

For a student, most people chose two electives simply to fulfill the requirement. If possible, they would have preferred not to take any electives at all.

A small number of students who already had clear ambitions would choose their electives according to their future career plans. Such students usually took two or three elective courses.

Since the fields covered by electives were drastically different, students who chose even more courses were generally pursuing grades themselves. That was, taking all seven compulsory subjects plus five electives and graduating with twelve Outstanding grades.

Those grades alone were an exceptionally prestigious calling card. Setting aside all kinds of awards, they represented the highest academic achievement one could attain at Hogwarts and would look impressive in an application for any profession.

Presenting grades in subjects relevant to a specific profession proved one's professional ability in a certain field. Graduating with perfect marks in all twelve subjects proved the wizard's own formidable capabilities.

Under such circumstances, choosing only four electives seemed somewhat... conspicuous.
