As Potter spoke, his cheeks suddenly turned red again.

Black could barely stand it and covered his face with one hand.

"I mean..."

"What if she was gradually attracted to me afterward, but she rejected me at first and then was too embarrassed to take it back?"

Black was at a loss for words. And honestly, now that he mentioned it...

If he wanted to say James had gone stupid... if that really had happened, it could indeed explain the current situation.

Even if she had developed feelings later, she might refuse to change her answer out of pride. That really was something a Gryffindor could do.

At least, putting himself in her shoes, Black felt that he would not take it back either. A girl he had briefly felt drawn to was nowhere near as important as his own pride, especially if she was a girl he had already rejected.

But that depended on that actually being the case. The current situation could just as easily be explained by the other person still having no interest in Potter, while James had imagined that she had been watching him all along.

With James still unwilling to give up, that was equally possible.

As for what James had just said about having already given up... they could just take that with a grain of salt. If he had truly given up, how would he know she was watching him? And why did he think she looked at him every time he showed off?

Obviously, it was because he was watching her even more often!
