Originally, they had only been interested in so-called specialized academic fields, the kind that looked like profound knowledge at a glance, mainly Charms and Potions.
But after hearing Manus put it that way, it really did seem to make sense.
If you had never read the other books in the library, how did you know they would definitely be useless to you?
Most importantly, some people had already gone to read them. If the others failed to keep up, they would naturally keep sinking within Ravenclaw's internal hierarchy of disdain... The range of topics others discussed was vast, while you could only say a few words within a tiny circle. Before long, you might be too ashamed to even stay in the common room.
Once the trend of internal competition took shape, no one could stay out of it.
So although Jasper grumbled about it helplessly, he still joined the crowd heading off to read.
"Doesn't it feel like this is having a rather bad effect?"
Quirinus scratched his head. He had only wanted to fill in the gaps in his knowledge and see whether there was anything he needed to make up for, preparing in advance for future study trips abroad.
Yet now he had been swept along too, forced to read things he was not especially interested in.

The books in the library might not necessarily prove useful after being read, but they certainly could do no harm.
