Although Voldemort had unleashed the Fiendfyre, he clearly had no attention to spare for how it was burning now.
As a result, it was not just the Order of the Phoenix suppressing the Fiendfyre. Some Death Eaters, finding that no amount of running would buy enough time for the Anti-Apparition Charm to be broken, were secretly suppressing it while fighting members of the Order.
Could this situation last?
No one knew. The battlefield was far too complicated now: Voldemort, Dumbledore, loyal Death Eaters, disloyal Death Eaters, Order members intent on killing Death Eaters, Order members more concerned with staying alive... even Order members among the Death Eaters, and Death Eaters within the Order.
Any shift in one party's decisions would affect everyone else. And with a group as strongly driven by emotion as wizards, their reactions in such an intense environment were utterly unpredictable.
Manus cared about only one thing now: could Dumbledore actually kill Voldemort?
Although Dumbledore currently held the upper hand, his advantage was far too slight. He could defeat Voldemort if he kept building on it, but that depended on his being able to maintain that momentum.
If Voldemort still had a trump card, or if the Fiendfyre burned through the Anti-Apparition Charm first, Dumbledore might not be able to keep him there.
If I intervened secretly now...
The thought stirred in Manus's mind, only for him to dismiss it after weighing his options.
He could, but there was no need. He could afford to wait indefinitely.
Voldemort's existence did affect him to some extent, but that inconvenience was nowhere near the trouble he would invite by acting too obviously and letting Dumbledore discover that he could actually kill Voldemort and locate the Horcruxes.
He could kill Voldemort, but he could not simply silence Dumbledore as well.
