Grandpa Lei worked as a Mech-type instructor, running a short free course that mixed basic computer instruction with introductory mechanical training. He noticed Xu Jiang because, unlike most attendees, Xu wanted to learn firearm operation, mech control, and methods to improve combat power. Lei regarded that persistence as the mindset of a genuine Mech Warrior 3 4.

He had spent six months scouting new talent for Nine Rivers Corporation, using trial slots and supplies as investments in promising newcomers. He offered Xu Jiang access to the beginner-only Black White Forest Spirit Domain, explaining frankly that he expected the favor to become valuable if Xu Jiang succeeded 4 15. Though he only set Xu Jiang a C-rank target, he waited outside the trial for his return and was astonished when Xu achieved an SSS-rank perfect clear 5 14.

After the clear, Lei reported Xu Jiang to Third Miss Qi Yao.
