Ch. 202Framing, Phoenix Chick, Fishing, "Truth"
Chapter Summary: “Framing, Phoenix Chick, Fishing, ‘Truth’”
Plot and Major Events
- Hawk and Mia unleash a massive Explosive Magic attack over a four-kilometer area, annihilating nearly 2,000 Allied soldiers. The remaining troops are routed by the Imperial Ground Support Unit and the 3rd Division Guard Regiment.
- The Imperial forces capture 231 prisoners, including Major Edmund Hawthorne, while the Allied brigade commander is badly wounded and held in an abandoned mine.
- Hawk collapses from mana exhaustion after extending Mia’s spell beyond her normal range, leaving Siegfried, Laiya, and Mia to decide how to protect their real spy and continue the mission.
- Mia proposes an elaborate deception: frame Allied Colonel Davis Bacht as the spy responsible for the defeat. A disguised operative will impersonate Davis, appear to negotiate payment with Laiya, and make the escaped Major Edmund witness the staged conversation.
- The plan relies on Edmund escaping through a deliberately created disturbance, then reporting what he saw to General Roxy. Supporting “evidence,” including the supposed flight of Davis’s family, will later reinforce the false story.
- The Imperial soldiers stage a Beastfolk riot, allowing Edmund to break his outdated Anti-Magic bracelet, escape his cell, and move toward the camp’s exit.
- Edmund secretly observes the staged meeting between “Davis” and Laiya. The impersonator convincingly imitates Davis’s voice, mannerisms, and regional insult, causing Edmund to believe that Davis betrayed the Allied Forces for money.
- Edmund chooses not to attack. He decides survival and warning General Roxy are more important than immediate revenge, and he escapes toward the Allied main force carrying the false intelligence.
- Once Edmund is safely gone, Mia confirms that the trap succeeded. She then orders the unit to advance immediately toward the Cocobia Rainforest and coordinate with the main Imperial force.
Character Development
- Mia undergoes the most significant change. Initially timid, guilt-ridden, and regarded as an ordinary soldier, she demonstrates strategic brilliance by creating the framing operation. Her confidence grows as she explains the plan, and by the end she adopts a forceful, ambitious leadership persona.
- Siegfried realizes that Mia is not merely a support Mage Soldier but a strategist capable of replacing Hawk. His admiration for Commander John also intensifies, as he interprets Mia’s presence as evidence of John’s foresight.
- Laiya remains an exceptional combatant but is shown to be less capable strategically. She is astonished by Mia’s intelligence and participates in the staged negotiation.
- Hawk is absent for most of the chapter after collapsing, emphasizing how dependent the unit had been on his strategic direction.
- Edmund changes from a terrified prisoner focused on survival into a determined witness seeking to expose what he believes is Davis’s treason. Although enraged, he demonstrates restraint and chooses escape over a futile attack.
- Siegfried and the unit shift from uncertainty to decisive offensive action once Mia assumes strategic responsibility.
Significant Themes
- Deception and manufactured truth: The chapter explores how carefully arranged evidence, unequal information, and a convincing witness can create a false reality.
- Psychological warfare: The Imperial forces win not only through overwhelming magic but by manipulating what the enemy believes happened.
- Hidden ability and unexpected leadership: Mia’s transformation challenges the assumption that quiet or timid individuals lack talent.
- Truth versus perception: Edmund believes he has uncovered the truth, but everything he sees has been deliberately staged. The title’s quotation marks around “Truth” highlight this manipulation.
- Duty over revenge: Edmund suppresses his desire to kill Davis and prioritizes surviving so he can warn his commanders.
- War as strategy and performance: Combat, impersonation, staged riots, and fabricated evidence all become parts of one larger military operation.
Key Character Interactions
- Siegfried, Laiya, and Mia: Their emergency council reveals Mia’s strategic potential and changes their understanding of her role.
- Mia and Siegfried: Siegfried begins treating Mia as a true commander and strategist, while Mia takes authority by directing the next phase of the operation.
- Laiya and the disguised “Davis”: They perform a fake negotiation designed to be overheard, portraying Davis as a paid traitor.
- Edmund and the apparent evidence: Edmund interprets every staged detail—the escape route, the guards’ movements, the conversation, and Davis’s speech—as proof of betrayal.
- Mia and the wider unit: After confirming the deception worked, Mia rallies the soldiers and leads them toward the next objective: rapidly seizing territory and supporting the main Imperial offensive.
