Ch. 282Jail John Conservatively Seized Power, Krauser Furiously Rebuked His Idiot Teammate
Chapter Summary
Plot and key events
- General John Maslow is detained in an Imperial First Prosecutorate interrogation room on fabricated charges of treason following his military successes.
- Prosecutor Krauser Valendena, an old schoolmate and former academy rival, conducts the interrogation. He understands that John’s arrest is mainly a political bargaining tactic between the Old Guard and Reformist factions, not a genuine attempt to convict him.
- Krauser presents two accusations:
- John supposedly obstructed the inventory of wartime spoils and favored the Beastfolk of the Saga Kingdom over Imperial soldiers.
- John allegedly staged an armed seizure of power by imprisoning Major General Tony and Colonel Max and summoning officers under false pretenses.
- John calmly dismantles the accusations. He explains that his troops were preventing the abuse of civilians under military regulations and international law. He absurdly claims that Tony and Max were bound as part of Wendy Brown’s experimental “Binding Treatment Method,” even threatening to sue the informant for stealing Wendy’s medical “commercial secret.”
- Krauser recognizes John’s extraordinary composure, intelligence, and shameless ability to manipulate the facts. He abandons the prepared accusations after finding no useful evidence against John.
- A fat interrogator connected to the Thomas Family barges in and attempts to seize control of the interrogation, intending to torture John into signing a confession.
- Krauser violently stops him, slaps and beats him unconscious, then orders his attendants to remove him. He angrily condemns the man as an incompetent political lackey whose interference could ruin the faction’s larger strategy.
- Afterward, Krauser resumes his polite demeanor and explains that John’s detention is unlikely to lead to a judgment. The Empire needs John to stabilize the two newly incorporated legions, and Emperor William’s anger makes it politically impossible to punish him.
- With the immediate political situation clarified, Krauser asks John about the mysterious Forbidden Seal incident from their academy days, revealing that this is his real reason for wanting to speak with him.
Character developments
- John Maslow: Remains calm, confident, and intellectually dominant despite being imprisoned. He demonstrates a sharp memory, legal knowledge, strategic awareness, and a talent for delivering outrageous explanations with complete conviction. He quickly sees through the political nature of the case.
- Krauser Valendena: Reveals himself as far more perceptive and capable than his courteous manner suggests. He is uninterested in meaningless factional theatrics, protects the integrity of the interrogation, and is willing to use extreme violence against incompetence. His admiration and curiosity toward John deepen.
- The fat interrogator: Is exposed as an arrogant, shortsighted political pawn. His attempt to bypass procedure and torture John results in humiliation, severe punishment, and the collapse of his authority.
- Wendy Brown: Though absent, she becomes central to John’s ridiculous defense, with John portraying her as an elite medical specialist whose “treatment” must be legally protected.
Themes
- Political manipulation and factional conflict: The treason case is a political tool used by the Old Guard against the Reformists rather than a legitimate prosecution.
- Intelligence versus bureaucratic incompetence: John and Krauser understand the larger political game, while the lesser interrogator is blinded by ambition and immediate advantage.
- Language and control of truth: John defeats the accusations by reframing evidence through technical, legal, and deliberately absurd interpretations.
- Power and restraint: True authority is shown not merely through rank but through political awareness, composure, and the ability to control events.
- Contrasting appearances: Krauser’s gentlemanly smile conceals a vicious temper, while John’s calmness conceals ruthless strategic thinking.
Important character interactions
- John and Krauser recognize each other from the academy, creating a tense but intellectually respectful exchange.
- Krauser attempts to trap John with loaded questions, but John turns each accusation back on him through precise wording and outrageous counterclaims.
- Krauser and the fat interrogator clash over procedure and authority; Krauser violently rebukes him for interfering and risking the political plan.
- After the confrontation, Krauser and John reach an implicit understanding: both recognize that the interrogation is largely a performance, and Krauser shifts the conversation toward the unresolved Forbidden Seal incident.
