Gon enters the 287th Hunter Exam and is recognized by Ryan as one of the exam’s most important candidates. He forms a close partnership with Killua and becomes part of a temporary group with Kurapika and Leorio. During the examination, he survives the storm trial and continues advancing despite the danger surrounding stronger candidates such as Hisoka and Illumi. 29 68

In the final test, Gon faces Hanzo. Although Hanzo overwhelms him physically, Gon refuses to surrender, viewing submission under coercion as a betrayal of his convictions. Hanzo ultimately forfeits, giving Gon the victory. 81
