Background / History
Ryan died in his previous life and was reborn as an infant in Tower City, retaining his memories and adult mentality. After recognizing Heaven’s Arena and later confirming the Hunter Association’s existence, he realized he had entered the world of Hunter x Hunter. Rather than rely blindly on foreknowledge, he treated that knowledge as incomplete intelligence and began planning for survival, Nen, and eventual entry into the Hunter world 1 4.
Because revealing his awareness would endanger his family life, Ryan deliberately acted like a quiet but ordinary child around his parents. In private, he converted crawling, play, schoolwork, and household routines into a concealed program of physical conditioning, observation, and information gathering 1 2.
His childhood training developed into an increasingly formal combat system. He kept hidden records, analyzed movement patterns, created simulated opponents, and built tactical exercises around balance, rhythm, terrain, recovery, and deception. His early confrontations with A Ji and neighborhood bullies proved that he could resolve threats with minimal force while maintaining the image of a vulnerable child 3 5 8.
Ryan’s understanding of strength changed after he saved his father from a falling scaffold plank and injured his arm in the process. He subsequently created a “Guardianship Module,” redefining power as the ability to protect people before danger reaches them rather than merely defeat opponents 11 12.
At Heaven’s Arena, Ryan climbed from the 1st to the 100th floor through eleven consecutive victories. He initially sought Wing and Zushi as possible links to Nen instruction, but chose to attract Wing’s notice through his own combat structure rather than directly asking for help. Wing’s evaluation and Water Divination confirmed Ryan as a Conjurer, though Wing refused to design his Hatsu for him 25 26 27.
After leaving the arena, Ryan traveled to Zaban City under the alias Resta to take the Hunter Exam. He entered the hidden examination site ahead of many candidates, concealed himself with Zetsu, and avoided direct contact with dangerous figures such as Hisoka and Illumi. His indirect interventions during the first phases nevertheless drew the attention of examinees and Hunter Association observers 27 29 31 40 49.
Personality
Ryan is intensely disciplined, analytical, and patient. He approaches training, combat, social behavior, and even injury recovery as systems that can be observed, measured, and improved. He values repeatable results over displays of talent, and he refuses to assume that previous-life knowledge or natural potential will compensate for poor preparation 2 7 12.
His restraint is both tactical and emotional. Ryan routinely hides his intelligence, strength, and Nen progress; he prefers to appear ordinary rather than invite suspicion, dependency, or predatory attention. This habit makes him difficult to read, even for the Hunter Association, which classifies him as a controlled but unpredictable “variable” 1 39 49.
Despite his detached manner, Ryan has a firm protective instinct. He intervenes when he believes he can prevent harm without escalating the situation, whether protecting bullied children, rescuing his father, helping Ponzu through hallucinations, or diverting Hisoka from Kurapika and Leorio. He considers strength meaningful when it preserves another person’s freedom or safety 8 11 31 32.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Conditioning and Close-Quarters Combat
Ryan built his body through years of controlled training in running, weighted exercise, striking, footwork, balance, recovery, and impact tolerance.
- Uses boxing fundamentals, kicks, evasive footwork, throws, sweeps, knees, and counterattacks.
- Prioritizes angles, balance disruption, timing, and force transfer over raw power.
- Can defeat stronger-looking opponents through minimal movement and positional control.
- Defeated two armed robbers in under eight seconds by using surprise, redirection, and joint attacks 5 7 15.
- His physical ability is formidable for his age, but he recognizes that it remains insufficient against experienced Nen users 18 21.
Tactical Analysis and Environmental Combat
Ryan treats terrain as part of every fight. He evaluates routes, cover, footing, sightlines, opponent habits, escape paths, and available improvised tools before acting.
- Developed Urban Combat Path Simulation Training (C-STP) for concealment, obstacle traversal, route variation, and silent movement 14.
- Uses traps, scaffolding, gravel, tripwires, suspended objects, mud, blind spots, and distractions to separate or control enemies 15 21.
- Maintains detailed combat records, including S-ACT-001 and other self-designed tactical evaluations 15.
- Reads weather, terrain, wind pressure, and thermal currents; used this skill to navigate the wetlands and retrieve Spider Hawk eggs safely 34 45.
- Prefers withdrawal once an objective is complete, regarding anonymity and a clean exit as part of victory 15.
Nen
Ryan’s Nen development emerged through meditation, physical conditioning, experimentation, and life-threatening pressure rather than formal training alone.
- Ten — Uses aura to reinforce movement and physical output, including leg strength during his intervention against Hisoka 31.
- Zetsu — Can suppress his aura and presence well enough to avoid immediate detection by Hisoka while navigating the Hunter Exam 29 30 35.
- Ren — First awakened under pressure when he released aura from his fist to block a Nen user’s attack 20.
- Water Divination — Confirmed as a Conjurer when the water level dropped without the leaf moving 26.
- Limitation: Wing cautioned that Ryan must stabilize Ten and Ren before attempting Hatsu; no completed personal Hatsu has been documented 26 27.
Conjuration Development
Ryan’s emerging Conjuration reflects his preference for structured battlefield control and ranged tactical pressure.
- His first unstable manifestation resembled a silver-gray gun crossbow or shortbow 17.
- He later conceived Silence Arc, a gray-silver staff intended to compress and fire Nen projectiles 19.
- His concepts emphasize trajectory control, enemy displacement, forced movement, and tactical chains rather than direct destructive output.
- The weapon concepts remain incomplete designs rather than fully established abilities 17 19 27.
Ranged Combat
Ryan developed a formal long-range system using a slingshot and steel balls.
- Expanded his reliable range from seven to fifteen meters.
- Can hit moving targets, use ricochets, and compensate for elevation, wind, and lighting.
- Uses shots to seal routes, create psychological pressure, disrupt information, and force opponents into disadvantageous positions.
- Designed dynamic multi-target drills to practice controlling space rather than simply striking targets 17.
Survival and Fieldcraft
Ryan is capable of independent wilderness survival and deliberately trains under uncertain conditions.
- Tracks prey through disturbed terrain, decoy routes, and behavioral patterns.
- Builds concealed shelters, filters and boils water, preserves food, and removes traces of his camps.
- Uses blindfolded cord-navigation drills to simulate ambushes and develop automatic reflexes.
- Views wilderness training as useful preparation, but insufficient compared with combat against empowered opponents 24.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Modified slingshot and steel balls — Primary discreet ranged weapon; later supplemented by a lightweight rapid-fire model for training 17 27.
- Daggers — Carried among his Hunter Exam travel equipment 27.
- Nen training notebook — Contains aura maps, movement diagrams, combat records, weapon concepts, and tactical models 17 19 27.
- Gloves — Repaired and reinforced after his recovery period for impact and pressure testing 12.
- Survival gear — Includes rations, medical gels, maps, and wilderness tools prepared for travel and the Hunter Exam 23 27.
Relationships
- Ryan’s mother — Protective and observant; she gradually recognizes the seriousness of Ryan’s training, worries about his injuries, and asks him not to bury his emotions 5 12 27.
- Ryan’s father — A construction worker whose access to Heaven’s Arena-related sites first gives Ryan indirect information about the wider Hunter world. Ryan saves him from a falling scaffold plank, deepening their bond 3 11 23.
- Wing — Evaluator rather than formal mentor. Wing recognizes Ryan’s Conjurer affinity and potential, but refuses responsibility for his Hatsu development 25 26.
- Zushi — Wing’s student and Ryan’s brief sparring opponent. Ryan defeats him with minimal force by exploiting his poor balance and eagerness 26.
- Hisoka — A dangerous observer who becomes intrigued by Ryan’s concealment, unusual gait, and refusal to react. Ryan consistently avoids direct engagement with him 31 34 39.
- Kurapika and Leorio — Fellow examinees whom Ryan discreetly protects from Hisoka in the wetlands. Ryan later shares a silent nod with Leorio after the Spider Hawk trial 31 47.
- Ponzu — Ryan quietly helps her regain focus during the hallucination-filled wetlands without revealing himself as her helper 32.
- Noda — Hunter Association observation recorder who interviews Ryan about his motives and finds him difficult to classify 49.
- Dono — Revenge-driven thug who leads an ambush against Ryan after an earlier defeat; Ryan defeats and restrains him rather than killing him 21.
Hunter Examination
First Phase: Numere Wetlands
Ryan enters the 287th Hunter Exam as Examinee No. 199 and keeps Zetsu active to avoid being noticed by Hisoka, Illumi, and other dangerous candidates. He uses terrain reading, controlled pacing, and environmental awareness to survive fog, hallucinations, traps, rain, and exhaustion 29 30 35 38.
He covertly disrupts Tonpa’s sabotage, distracts Hisoka long enough for Kurapika and Leorio to escape, and gives Ponzu advice that helps her resist the hallucinations. These actions are deliberately subtle, as Ryan considers open heroics too dangerous during the exam 31 32.
Ryan finishes the endurance stage in 31st place, approximately 17% faster than the average examinee. Although examiners detect no visible Nen use, his stable performance and unusual isolation place him in Observation Group B 40.
Spider Hawk Nest Trial
During the Spider Hawk egg trial, Ryan maps wind pressure, cliff formations, thermal currents, and safe landing points. He uses an updraft route to retrieve an egg and return safely, then later completes the official requirement after using the spider silk and rising currents to scale back to the platform 44 45.
His repeated use of hot-air currents and his quiet assistance to Leorio are recorded by the Hunter Association. These actions contribute to the Association’s decision to study his motives more closely 46 49.
Association Observation
Noda interviews Ryan after the third phase because the Association cannot determine whether he seeks to become a Hunter or simply obtain a Hunter License. Ryan refuses to give a simple explanation, asking whether Noda wants “the truth” or “a pleasant-sounding reason” 49.
The Association subsequently classifies him as a rational, low-interference variable and assigns him to a solo group with free movement in Trick Tower, intending to observe his indirect influence on other examinees 49.

Trivia
- Ryan initially recorded training with lines, curves, and symbols in dirt because he could not yet write 2.
- He created a private “interpersonal distribution map” of classmates to assess social risks and behavioral patterns 6.
- His long-range weapon training was funded by saving money through reduced lunches for three months 17.
- He sent two million Jenny of his Heaven’s Arena earnings to his family before leaving for the Hunter Exam 27.
- His attempts to remain unnoticed repeatedly have the opposite effect: both Hisoka and the Hunter Association identify him as unusual despite his restraint 39 40 49.
