Ch. 21Value

Locke decided to rescue three Devil Fruit users from a human-trafficking crew while Yun Zhinnan and Carmen went to find the crew’s ship. He infiltrated the group by killing a trafficker and taking his appearance.

  • The captain said the three bear-type Devil Fruit users were worth at least five hundred million Beli and planned to search the island for more.
  • Locke, Carmen, and Yun Zhinnan identified the group as human traffickers, and Locke chose to rescue the prisoners partly because he wanted another Devil Fruit for Carmen.
  • Locke explained that the crew might include Haki users and sent Yun Zhinnan and Carmen to locate the ship while he approached the prisoners.
  • Carmen objected to Locke going alone, but Yun Zhinnan interrupted their argument and the group followed Locke’s plan.
  • Locke concealed the rearmost trafficker with an illusion, killed him, took his appearance, and rejoined the group unnoticed.
  • Carmen complained to Yun Zhinnan as the two headed back toward the shore to search for the traffickers’ ship.

Ch. 22Slave Ship

Yun Zhinnan attacked a slave ship and killed its powerful first mate, Ham, by secretly damaging his internal organs during their fight. Meanwhile, Locke followed a group across the island to a large mound with a cave opening, where they believed the treasure was located.

  • Yun Zhinnan left Carmen hidden near the slave ship and quickly defeated the sailors on its deck.
  • Yun Zhinnan fought Ham, the ship's first mate, and endured repeated blows while secretly using subtle force to damage Ham's organs.
  • Yun Zhinnan explained that Ham's movements had caused his damaged organs to fail, and Ham died before Yun Zhinnan entered the cabin.
  • Locke concealed his identity as he followed three people and their group to a large mound with a small cave opening at the island's center.

Ch. 23Awakening Fruit

Locke entered a tomb and discovered a legendary Awakening Fruit, but the captain attacked him as he tried to take it. Locke ate the fruit while being sent flying and found it had vanished from his mouth.

  • Coby forced the three captured men to lead the group through the tomb to a burial chamber containing a tree and three illusory Devil Fruits.
  • The captain identified the tree as the legendary Devil Fruit Tree, uprooted it, and found the glowing Awakening Fruit at its roots.
  • The three captives freed themselves and transformed into a black bear, a polar bear, and a panda before fighting the captain's crew.
  • Locke grabbed the tree while the captain charged into the battle, plucked the Awakening Fruit, and watched the tree turn to ash.
  • The captain struck Locke with a Haki-coated punch, and Locke ate the fruit as he flew into the wall; afterward, the fruit had vanished.

Ch. 24Demon King

After eating the Awakening Fruit, Locke’s Illusion-Illusion Fruit ability awakened, letting his illusions become real. Surrounded by Sis and his crew, Locke finally stabilized enough to summon a towering Demon King made of purple flames.

  • The Awakening Fruit strengthened Locke and transformed his illusions into real creations whose power depended on his stamina.
  • Sis attacked Locke, and his crew joined the pursuit after realizing Locke had taken the fruit.
  • Locke fled toward the tomb exit while the three brothers, freed from the melee, tended their wounds and followed cautiously.
  • Sis’s crew surrounded Locke outside, but he stalled them until the energy in his body settled.
  • When Coby and the crew charged, Locke summoned an eight-meter-tall purple-flamed Demon King wielding a massive hammer.

Ch. 25Sis

Locke fought Sis after the Demon King was destroyed, using his clone and sword techniques to survive Sis’s Haki defense. He wounded Sis with a trick, then fooled him again while Sis searched among the phantoms for the real Locke.

  • Locke transformed into a purple-flame Demon King and knocked down the attacking men, but Sis caught the giant’s hammer and shattered the Demon King with a suplex.
  • Sis attacked Locke, who drew his Tang sword and created a clone to fight alongside him, but Sis’s Haki blocked his strikes as both fighters began to tire.
  • The eldest brother led Third Brother and Fourth Brother against the remaining men while Locke conserved his strength and dodged Sis’s attacks.
  • Sis offered to let Locke work for him, but Locke refused and used Phantom: Sword Flash to conceal himself among illusory attackers.
  • Locke pierced Sis’s shoulder from among the phantoms, then tricked him again as Sis tried to locate the real Locke.

Ch. 26Death

Locke defeated Sis after being beaten nearly to death, and the Kuma brothers carried the unconscious Locke toward the shore to find his ship. Meanwhile, Carmen appeared aboard the slave ship to protect the wounded Yun Zhinnan.

  • Sis tricked Locke into attacking, grabbed him, and beat him until he could no longer resist.
  • Sis lunged at Locke with a knife, but the blade stopped just short of his face; Locke escaped and stabbed Sis through the heart before passing out.
  • The Kuma brothers defeated their opponents, treated Locke and their injured brothers, then carried Locke toward the coast to search for his ship.
  • Aboard the slave ship, Carmen appeared in front of the wounded Yun Zhinnan as sailors surrounded her after he collapsed.

Ch. 27Solution

Carmen helped the enslaved people defeat the sailors aboard the slave ship and asked them to search for Locke. The searchers mistook the Kuma brothers for possible enemies before Carmen recognized Locke on the third brother’s back and brought them to the ship.

  • Carmen’s rescued people beat the sailors and stopped only when she called them off.
  • Carmen asked the healthier rescued people to search the island for Locke while she stayed aboard to care for the injured.
  • A searcher encountered the Kuma brothers and followed them after noticing the injured man on the third brother’s back.
  • The searchers surrounded the Kuma brothers and brought Carmen over to identify the man they carried.
  • Carmen recognized Locke, heard the eldest brother explain what had happened, and led the three brothers to the slave ship.

Ch. 28Dream

Locke woke in his old apartment and spent the day revisiting his former life, meeting Zhao Lei and calling his mother before realizing the familiar world was not real. At night, he confronted Annie, the little girl who had brought him back, and asked who she was.

  • Locke woke in his rented apartment, called Zhao Lei, and arranged to meet him that evening.
  • Locke walked through the city to his old school and spent the afternoon reminiscing on campus.
  • Locke met Zhao Lei at their old dry pot restaurant, but Zhao Lei left early after receiving a call from his new girlfriend.
  • Locke called his mother and cried as they spoke for more than an hour.
  • Locke noticed a little girl following him and asked who she was; she introduced herself as Annie.

Ch. 29Annie

Locke spoke with Annie in her dream and learned how she became a ghost after pirates attacked her island and destroyed most of it. Believing Locke had eaten the Divine Tree’s crystal to protect it, Annie asked to travel with him and guard him, and Locke agreed.

  • Locke asked Annie why she had followed him, and she explained that she had been drawn to his dream world.
  • Annie told Locke that she had been chosen to eat a fruit from the Divine Tree, but the villagers thought she had no powers.
  • Pirates attacked the island, killed Annie and the other guardians, and tried to destroy the Divine Tree; Annie became a ghost and sank most of the island in a rage.
  • Annie explained that she had saved Locke from Sis by trapping Sis in a nightmare, then pulled Locke into her dream to ask about the Divine Tree’s aura.
  • Locke told Annie that he had eaten the Divine Tree’s crystal to keep it from the bad guys, and Annie asked to travel with him so she could protect him.
  • Locke agreed to let Annie accompany him, and Annie happily began spinning around him.

Ch. 30Getting Acquainted

Locke woke aboard the slave ship after recovering from his injuries and learned how Carmen and the freed slaves had defeated the crew. He discovered Annie had trapped the three Devil Fruit users in dreams to teach them to protect him as the Divine Tree, and persuaded her to let them go so he could speak with them.

  • Locke woke aboard the slave ship, and Carmen told him she had freed the slaves and led them in defeating the crew.
  • Carmen explained that the three Devil Fruit users had carried Locke aboard and treated his injuries, so Locke asked her to bring them to him.
  • Carmen returned unable to wake the three, and Locke called Annie to appear.
  • Carmen mistook the glowing Annie for a ghost, clung to Locke, and pretended to faint when Annie floated in the air.
  • Annie admitted she had trapped the three in dreams to teach them that they had to protect the Divine Tree, which she said was Locke.
  • Locke asked Annie to release the three so he could talk to them first, and Annie agreed.

Ch. 31Story

Locke listened to the three bear-men brothers explain how a villager’s treasure-map scam stranded them on an island, where they ate three Devil Fruits and were captured by slave traders. After rescuing them, Locke heard their story and learned about their lives in Bear Bear Village.

  • Carmen left Locke’s cabin after Annie disappeared, while Annie secretly watched and insisted that Locke belonged to her.
  • Locke thought about his dream of his previous life and wondered whether his family there was safe beneath the stars.
  • Annie brought Big Bear, Second Bear, and Panda to Locke, and the brothers thanked him for saving their lives.
  • Big Bear explained that Laifu had tricked the brothers with a fake treasure map, drugged them, and abandoned them on an island.
  • The brothers revealed that they had eaten three Devil Fruits to stave off hunger, lost their ability to swim, and were later captured by slave traders.

Ch. 32Education

Locke listened to Big Bear and the others recount their stories, then offered to accompany them home without forcing them to join his crew. Five days later, Locke had mostly recovered, and the freed slaves were preparing to return home aboard the slave ship.

  • Locke asked Big Bear and the other two what they planned to do, and they said they wanted to go home first.
  • Locke agreed to accompany the three and promised not to force them to leave with him, while Annie watched them depart.
  • Locke explained to Annie that he wanted to win them over through kindness, then told her a story about love and peace.
  • Yun Zhinnan recovered faster than Locke, walking three days after waking while Locke only managed to get out of bed the day before.
  • Locke had Carmen organize the slaves to return home and gave them the slave ship for their journey.

Ch. 33Leaving

Locke prepared to leave the island for Bisi Island with his companions and gave Yun Zhinnan a Haki training manual. Yun Zhinnan recognized similarities between Haki and the True Qi he had cultivated since childhood.

  • Locke ate with Carmen, Yun Zhinnan, and the three Kuma brothers and announced they would set off for Bisi Island.
  • Locke reassured Carmen that his injuries had nearly healed, and Carmen agreed to the departure.
  • Annie admitted she was nervous about leaving the island, and Locke reassured her about the outside world.
  • Locke gave Yun Zhinnan a Haki training manual and asked him to read it.
  • Yun Zhinnan said Haki resembled the True Qi he had cultivated since childhood, surprising Locke.

Ch. 34Bisi Island

Locke and his companions discovered Bisi Island’s village had been burned and its people killed, including Big Bear’s beloved Ruhua and her father. Big Bear blamed the Navy, and after the soldiers surrounded the Phantom, Locke’s group confronted them while Carmen stopped their bullets.

  • Locke and his companions arrived at Bisi Island and found the village burned, with corpses scattered among the ruins.
  • Big Bear found Ruhua and her father dead, then accused the Navy ship that had departed earlier of massacring the village.
  • Locke realized the Navy planned to frame his crew and hide while Annie checked that the soldiers had not damaged the Phantom.
  • A Navy officer ordered the supposed pirates to surrender, and Big Bear charged the soldiers before they shot him down.
  • Locke had Carmen drag Big Bear to safety, and she halted the Navy’s bullets in midair as Second Bear came to check on his injured brother.

Ch. 35Slaughter

Locke and his companions defeated the Marines who had attacked the village, and Second Bear and Panda avenged the villagers by killing them. After interrogating their officer, Sofira, Locke learned that Colonel Nezumi had ordered the attack and returned to check on his ship.

  • Second Bear treated Big Bear, who identified the attackers as the people responsible for Ruhua and Master and urged revenge before passing out.
  • Locke and Carmen disarmed the Marines, allowing Second Bear and Panda to charge into their ranks and kill them.
  • Locke blocked the Marines' escape to their warship, while Yun Zhinnan captured Sofira and brought him before Locke.
  • Sofira revealed that he was a lieutenant colonel from the East Blue's 16th Branch and that Colonel Nezumi had ordered the village attack.
  • Locke let Second Bear and Panda deal with Sofira, then returned to his ship to check on Annie.

Ch. 36Revenge

After Marines massacred the villagers, Locke helped the Kuma brothers bury the dead and agreed to help them get revenge. He set course for the East Blue 16th Marine Branch, destroying three Marine warships on the way as he reflected on his newly awakened Devil Fruit powers.

  • Locke found Marines bleeding while asleep aboard the Phantom, learned Annie had used his dream-based attack technique, and threw the Marines into the sea.
  • Locke and his crew searched the village, found that 284 of its 287 villagers had been killed, and helped the three Kuma brothers bury them.
  • Big Bear demanded revenge, and Locke promised to help before announcing that the brothers had joined the crew and ordering the Phantom toward the East Blue 16th Marine Branch.
  • The Phantom encountered three Marine warships marked with the number 16, and Locke summoned an ice giant that sank one ship and split the other two apart.
  • As the Phantom continued sailing, Locke considered how his awakened illusions could attack directly and how Annie helped him recover forgotten techniques from his past life.

Ch. 37Bounty

Locke continued cultivating aboard the Phantom while the Marines issued a bounty for his crew based only on a distant photograph of their ship. The crew learned they had been marked for fifty million Beli as they sailed toward the Marine 16th Branch.

  • Locke sent Annie back to study navigation, then returned to cultivating Yun Zhinnan's nameless technique.
  • Sengoku received a report that a pirate crew had slaughtered island residents and sunk four Marine warships, and he ordered a fifty-million-Beli bounty for everyone aboard their ship.
  • Sengoku instructed the messenger to send Smoker to the Marine 16th Branch before he went to Loguetown to investigate the pirates.
  • Three days after Locke dealt with the warships, Big Bear brought Locke a wanted poster aboard the Phantom.
  • Locke saw that the Marines had used a distant photograph showing the Phantom's name, but no recognizable faces, as the basis for the crew's bounty.

Ch. 38Sanji

Locke brought Carmen and his crew to the sea restaurant Baratie after learning it was nearby, where Carmen reunited with Sanji and challenged him to a cooking competition. The chapter ended as Locke impatiently urged them to begin, while his crew teased him for being jealous.

  • Locke ordered the Phantom to approach Baratie after Big Bear reported spotting a restaurant at sea.
  • Locke brought Carmen to Baratie, where Sanji rushed over to flirt with her.
  • Carmen told Sanji she had learned cooking because of him and asked to compete with him.
  • Locke interrupted Sanji and Carmen while his crew watched and teased him for being jealous.

Ch. 39Competition

Carmen defeated Sanji in a cooking contest, but tasting his sashimi made her reflect on a promise she had made to Locke. The Phantom crew departed, while Locke told Sanji he looked forward to meeting him again in the New World.

  • Carmen and Sanji competed before the Baratie diners, making twice-cooked pork and salmon sashimi respectively.
  • The diners favored Carmen's aromatic dish, and she won the contest by a wide margin.
  • Carmen gave Sanji her recipe notebook and said she looked forward to competing with him again.
  • Locke tasted both dishes, caught up with Carmen, and reassured her that he would always stay by her side.
  • Carmen kissed Locke on the cheek and returned to her room, and Locke ordered the Phantom crew to set sail.
  • Locke told Sanji to meet him in the New World and asked him to tell a moss-green-haired man that he awaited his challenge.

Ch. 40Attack

Locke and his crew attacked the Navy’s 16th Branch, aiming to take down its officers while sparing ordinary Marines where possible. The assault began with Locke’s devastating strike, but Yun Zhinnan was stopped by an elderly gate guard named Old Qin as Locke and the others fought through the branch.

  • Locke sailed away from Baratie, leaving Sanji pondering his parting words, and a Navy officer with two cigars and a girl carrying a katana arrived at the restaurant.
  • Locke prepared his crew for an attack on the Navy’s 16th Branch, leaving Carmen behind to guard the Phantom.
  • Locke led Yun Zhinnan, the three Bear brothers, and Annie onto the island, where his Phantom: Fall attack smashed into the branch.
  • The Bear brothers became locked in battles with several majors while Yun Zhinnan raced through the branch and was sent flying by Old Qin, the Marine guarding the gate.
  • Locke destroyed Navy buildings as Annie’s ability knocked out Marines who came near him.
