Ran Yuanyao grew up near Zhao Danshi, and the two were inseparable childhood friends. After Zhao came out to his family, Zhao's parents wrongly assumed Ran was his boyfriend and confronted Ran's family. When Zhao later tried to visit during the winter after entering university, Ran's mother drove him away, leaving the friends separated for more than five years. 11
