A brief ringing sounded inside the hull, then was swiftly swallowed by the engine's roar and the crash of waves, as if it had never existed.
In the corridor outside the communications room, the lights flickered on and off.
A petite figure slipped past along the shadows, her footsteps so light they seemed weightless. Behind her, the iron grate of the ventilation shaft gently closed.
The patrolling Marines came around the corner, their boots striking the metal floor in a steady, hollow rhythm.

He frowned and instinctively slowed down, his gaze sweeping back and forth along both sides of the corridor.
"Why do I feel like someone just passed by?"
His companion yawned without even lifting his eyelids, waving him off impatiently. "You're too tense."

The footsteps gradually faded, and the patrol disappeared into the shadows at the end of the corridor.
