Setting and Layout

Before its destruction, Hachinosu was a lawless pirate hub defined by alcohol, gunpowder, bloodshed, and constant disorder. It was portrayed as paradise for pirates and a nightmare for ordinary people. 10

• Stone Skull / Skull Mountain — A massive stone skull dominated the island’s center. During Ochoku’s final battle, it was revealed to be the head of a giant body formed from Hachinosu itself through the Island-Island Fruit. 10 323
• Skull Palace — Ochoku’s seat of power was located inside the skull. By the Wang Zhi Pirates era, the pale-yellow mountain had deep, hollow eye sockets, a small window in its nasal bone, and an orange rock formation resembling a bandana on its right side. 318
• Honeycomb District — Natural caves beneath the skull had been converted into dense, honeycomb-like stone buildings. 10
• Harbor — The bay accommodated dozens of pirate ships and was a frequent site of public confrontations. 10 11
• Businesses — Taverns, weapon shops, slave markets, bounty houses, black markets, and gambling dens operated openly across the island. 10
• Pirate culture — Violence, indulgence, trade, and notoriety coexisted without meaningful restraint. 10

History

Kaido's Recruitment

At fifteen, after being sold to the Marines by the Vodka Kingdom and escaping captivity, Kaido eventually reached Hachinosu and established himself through brutal violence. Whitebeard introduced him to Rocks, who recruited him into the Rocks Pirates. 473

During this period, Kaido met the twenty-four-year-old Charlotte Linlin. She offered him food, introduced herself, and told him to seek her out if he encountered trouble. Decades later, Kaido remembered this greeting as an important act of acceptance amid a youth shaped by betrayal and exploitation. 473

Rock's Arrival

Shakuyaku traveled to Hachinosu after retiring from the Kuja Pirates, intending to live on the island despite its status as Rocks Pirates territory. Rock accompanied her after forcing the Kuja Pirates to give him a ride. 8 9 10

Upon reaching the harbor, Rock openly called Hachinosu disgusting and spread his Observation Haki across the island. His presence was noticed by Whitebeard, Charlotte Linlin, Shiki, and Rocks D. Zebek; Rock and Rocks then locked gazes across several kilometers. 10

Harbor Battle

Rock incapacitated nearly every pirate surrounding him with a massive lightning strike, while deliberately leaving Shakuyaku’s area untouched. 11 He then defeated Kaido in a single attack before fighting Shiki throughout the harbor and sky. 11 12

Rock’s battle with Shiki caused catastrophic damage to Hachinosu’s harbor, buildings, sea, and skies. His Thunder Roar · Heavenfall Prison immobilized Shiki and disrupted the Float-Float Fruit through electromagnetic pressure; Rocks intervened before the finishing attack could kill Shiki. The remaining lightning cracked the coastline and sent enormous waves into the sea. 12 13

Afterward, Rocks invited Rock to join the Rocks Pirates. Rock refused, declaring his intention to join the Marines instead, then clashed directly with Rocks. Their collision vaporized seawater, melted parts of the island, and caused Hachinosu to begin sinking before Rock escaped in lightning form. 14

Following Rock’s departure, the island’s leading pirates remained unusually silent while considering his strength and youth. Rocks maintained that he and Rock might not become sworn enemies, having sensed ambition and confidence rather than genuine malice. Hachinosu eventually returned to its usual disorder, while Shakuyaku predicted that Rock would change the era. 15

Reports of the incident reached Marine Headquarters, where Kong ordered Sengoku and Tsuru to find and recruit the lightning-user. The Marines deliberately circulated news of the confrontation, spreading the reputation of the unidentified “Lightning Boy” through underworld networks, bounty-hunter organizations, and the World Government. Reports claimed that he had escaped unscathed, although Rock had actually suffered injuries from Rocks’s attack. 15 19 20

Shakuyaku's Extortion Bar

Shakuyaku later established the Extortion Bar in central Hachinosu. Her reputation gave the establishment unusual authority: pirates lined up obediently, avoided making trouble, and accepted exorbitant prices and poor service. 36

The bar became a rare neutral space where even Rocks and Roger avoided fighting. Shakuyaku’s rule forbade private fights within the establishment, forcing hostile visitors to take conflicts out to sea. 37 38

The restriction also extended to private fights on the island by guests of the bar. Even Rocks obeyed Shakuyaku’s authority, making her rules an exceptional restraint on Hachinosu’s otherwise lawless society. 38

The Roger Pirates’ visit was encouraged by news of the bar’s success and a message from Shakuyaku asking Rayleigh to “Come pick me up.” Although the crew initially hesitated because Hachinosu belonged to Rocks, Roger rallied them to pursue what they wanted. 36

God Valley Incident

During a night of torrential rain, an attack within Hachinosu shocked its pirates because it had occurred inside their own stronghold, on territory they had considered secure. 62

Later, news that Shakuyaku was alive and connected to God Valley spread through the docks, taverns, and streets. Excitement, suspicion, and anger swept the island, while the Rocks Pirates’ officers assembled in the main hall and discussed the Marines’ disorder. 66

Wang Zhi Pirates' Rule

After the Rocks Pirates era, Hachinosu remained an active and overcrowded pirate stronghold. Ochoku led the Wang Zhi Pirates from the Skull Palace, while his subordinates Gaia and Marqi respectively advocated violence and commercial expansion. 318

Ochoku maintained a cautious policy, fearing that aggressive expansion would expose Hachinosu while the great pirate powers remained inactive. Marqi, however, viewed the island’s growing pirate population as a source of profit, while Gaia regarded its lack of strong opponents as intolerably dull. 318

Ochoku regarded his force as the largest pirate power outside the three leading pirate rulers. His subordinates also discussed the suspicious calm surrounding Azure Dragon’s disappearance. Marqi criticized Gaia for crippling more than thirty pirates and throwing them into the sea, treating their deaths as the loss of profitable assets. 318

Rock's Return and Hachinosu's End

Rock returned to Hachinosu alone as a Marine, openly declaring that he had come to subjugate pirates. After effortlessly defeating the port’s initial defenders, he provoked the island’s pirates by dismissing them as low-class pirates. 319

Looking toward Skull Mountain, Rock recalled Rocks and expressed nostalgia for the island’s past. The pirates initially mocked his declaration because he wore no Marine uniform and had entered a stronghold they believed even the Marines and World Government would not dare attack. 319

Ochoku recognized Rock as Azure Dragon and accused him of violating the longstanding noninterference between Hachinosu and the Navy. Rock dismissed the threat of war and hinted that Ochoku had benefited from outside support. Ochoku then ordered the island’s tens of thousands of pirates to attack together, only for Rock’s Thunder Judgment—Heavenly Fall of Ten Thousand Paths to devastate their charge, destroy buildings, and tear apart the ground. 321

Ochoku mobilized Hachinosu’s pirates against Rock and ultimately used the Island-Island Fruit to turn the entire island into a giant, with Skull Mountain as its head. Marqi supported the defense with poisonous fungal eggs capable of causing corrosive corpse explosions. 321 323

Sakazuki’s arrival shattered the pirates’ remaining morale. As the island’s defenders abandoned one another to escape, Rock used Fist Bone: Thunder Galaxy to tear through Ochoku’s giant form, while Sakazuki detonated the underground magma with Underworld: Core Eruption. The resulting lightning, magma, poison, and collapse annihilated Hachinosu, including Skull Mountain, in a single day. 324

Marqi was killed by a dying pirate while attempting to flee through the poisoned ground. Ochoku watched his followers trample and betray one another, recognizing the collapse of the pirate society he had ruled before his giant form was destroyed. Rock methodically prevented the remaining pirates from escaping, while Marines aboard a distant warship witnessed the destruction of the “Pirate Holy Land.” 324

Political Aftermath

The Five Elders later challenged Rock over Hachinosu’s destruction, arguing that he had attacked a major force without reporting beforehand and destabilized the balance of the seas. They described the island as an important node in the New World’s pirate order, connected to numerous other forces. 348

Rock defended the operation as the elimination of pirates and the rescue of civilians. He claimed that his return from the Time Fruit’s effects had placed him on Hachinosu, where he immediately witnessed pirate crimes; the Five Elders could not verify this account because the island had already been razed. 348

Rock also argued that destroying Hachinosu removed a pirate pilgrimage destination, an underground trading hub, and a place where civilians could be captured and sold. The confrontation established the island’s destruction as a political dispute between his campaign against piracy and the World Government’s concern for the existing balance of power. 348
